When it was announced that Jordan is back, Kerr and Jude Buschler had a conversation about whether Phil Jackson would make him a starter or not, and the conventional wisdom is that it's impossible for a player to suddenly become a top-tier player after nearly two years away from the game. At the time, the Chicago front office recommended that Jordan return in the start of 95-96 season due to his body not being a basketball player's body and the long layoff, but with a playoff berth in doubt at the time, Jordan opted to return right away, and returned at the end of the 9495 season.
In the 17 games Jordan played after his return, Chicago went 13-4 and clinched a playoff. While he often looked like his prime in the regular season and playoffs, the problem was the ups and downs of his play. Jordan committed several mistakes that weren't very Jordanian and this was ultimately the main reason for the series loss to Orlando.
Also, with the exception of Pippen and Armstrong, almost all of the players were changed from they were in the 1st 3peat, so there wasn't enough time to build optimized team around Jordan. Pippen's playoff struggles have been a virtual constant, so I don't want to point fingers at him as the cause of the loss - Chicago was a team that needed Jordan to play ridiculously well to win championship anyway. That's why the #1 and #2 all-time championship teams that won with the least amount of scoring supporting cast from their teammates are 98 Chicago and 97 Chicago.
The bottom line is that Jordan's '95 second-round loss was actually a series in which he did better than expected, as this video shows. He just didn't have enough time to regain his body, his technical confidence, and his bond with his teammates. IMO even if Rodman had been in Chicago in '95, Bulls would have had hard time vs Orlando in '95 if Jordan hadn't regained his form into the Jordan we know.
After that season, Jordan once said he realized that his body was not optimized for basketball due to his baseball days, and that his physical abilities, such as speed and quickness, vertical had diminished from his prime, so he knew he had to change his style of play.
So, starting in the 95-96 season, his post-up play became more of a focus and we got the Jordan we know from the 2nd 3-peat era. Note that Jordan's body would not be optimized for basketball again until the 96-97 season. In fact, the Bulls were actually better than they were in 95-96 at the starting of the season, and probably would have broken 72 wins if it weren't for injuries to teammates in the mid season.

Michael gave the City of Chicago something it's never had before or since: bragging rights for the best team in NBA history (96' Bulls) a near-guaranteed Championship every full season paired with an all-star/healthy Scottie Pippen, the Best basketball player/teams sport athlete of all-time! I grew up in Chicago and I remember the pre-MJ Bulls, nobody paid them any attention! Michael Jordan's contributions to sports in Chicago were so incredible from 85' thru 98', I can't see knocking anything he's done!

I count this against MJ. But everything has context. The man hadn't played meaningful basketball in 1 1/2 years. His supporting cast was subpar. And they were a few points away in every game from being the 4-2 WINNER. In my mind, defeats help build the legacy to overcome adversity. That's what made MJ(and most of the greats) so GOATISH. He didn't cheat his way to a title. Nobody said that KG, Ray and PP would 3peat. The Heatles said not 1, not 2, not 5... no adversity in any of that. That's why going 4-6 looks worse than West going 1-8. Broke down further, West went 22-33. LeBron went 22-33. However, West's teams were NEVER swept. LeBron's supporting teammates were way better than West's. West never laid an egg. MJ never laid an egg in the playoffs. LeBron has.

This is absurd, i can vividly remember how Jordan looked after a two year absence and what only 22 games played before playoffs? His timing was off and he did not look as fluid. It was obvious, no one at the time was judging him on that series and contrary to modern perspective outside of Chicago not everyone was rooting for him or the bulls. Also, he coulda just let that season go lnowi g he would not be 100% but he didn’t carehow he would loom if they lost.

I’d say this is the one series where you could blame Jordan for the bulls losing his entire career. Game 1 and 4 were on Jordan but the other two losses were more on Pippen and Kukoc who added nothing scoring less than 10 pts. I mean if Jordan’s worst series is him going 31 ppg 6.5 rebounds and 2.5 steals per game that’s not bad at all. He’s never had a meltdown like Lebron in 2011.

    • @MrKurtykurt
      @MrKurtykurt 4 месяца назад +8

And who gets all the blame? MJ. And rightfully so…that’s not how it works for Lebron. 2011 and is the only series LeBron actually gets blame bc it’s impossible, at least without looking like an idiot, to argue he shouldn’t. What about 2008 when he avg 19ppg on 26% and 6 T/O in the first FOUR games of that series vs Boston and the Cavs STILL won 2 of those games. Which just goes to show how much better that Cavs supporting cast was than ppl care to remember

Lebron costs his team in turnovers. Lebron GOAT of turnovers most in NBA history. Most points kind doesn't mean much if you have most turnovers as well. You cost your team a 6 point possible swing when you turn the ball over. Take possible 3 off of the score board for you and give the other team possible 3 points instead.

Jordan was not in bad shape, and he wasn't rusty. He pronounced himself fully ready when he came back, and we know he'd been scrimmaging full court and testing himself to be sure he was ready. He dropped 55 on the Knicks in MSG, and had monster games vs. Orlando as well. If you look at his playoff averages in his shortened season, they compare very well with his career stats. He was fine.
What he couldn't do is be clutch and deliver when it counted (something he was supposedly always the best at doing), which isn't a physical problem-- it was a mental problem. He had critical blunders and lapses that cost them games (the supposed best ever closer couldn't even lead them to a win with an 8 point lead in the 4th quarter?).
So of course it counts. In the same way Magic had a great statistical Finals in the 'Tragic Magic' season, where his several late game blunders cost the Lakers that series victory. That is certainly considered a black mark on Magic's resume, and he was crucified in the press for it.
After the loss, what did Jordan say? He said 'we're a Horace Grant (type player) away' (from being competitive enough). During the sweep the following year, Orlando had Grant for only the first half of the first game, and then lost him to injury for all the other games.

It counts but considering the circumstances leading into the playoffs it ultimately proves that no one, not even the goat Michael Jordan, can skip the daily routines, practices, conditioning and the ramping up of the regular season and expect to consistently summon legendary performances throughout the duration of the playoffs against the best competition. He's human despite plenty of evidence to the contrary..

Michael played well but we all know this wasn’t the same Michael from 93 that Michael Jordan came back in 96. The thing about Jordan losing this series was that it made him more determined to come back next season fully ready which he did and we all know what happened there Three more championships. And also, Jordan took the blame like a true leader does for the loss. He didn’t have excuses. He knew the other team was just better and he knew that he didn’t perform to his standards.

good video...I think MJ didn't have the legs to close consistently like before in 95. At times he looked like the late 80s-93 MJ, but then at times, he looked like he never played bball in his life smh. Also, I think the lack of a legit PF hurt the Bulls that series vs Orlando. They had no real, legit PF (no Horace or D-Rod). Horace was the xfactor in that 95 series vs Chicago. This series is def not a black mark on MJ's career. Nobody is perfect and I think he exceeded expectations considering he was playing baseball for damn near 2 years. Also, the 2nd 3peat completely wipes this 95 series out imo. 96 Bulls are easily one of the top 5 teams of all times and a case for greatest team of all times. That 95 series defeat vs Orlando made MJ train in the Jordan Dome on the set of Space Jam and comeback even stronger. The Bulls mashed Orlando in 96 and was the perfect revenge

Name the talking heads who said that that defeat is as bad as any of the failures of lebron and kobe. When rational people talk about that ECSF, 99% of the time, they are addressing the jordan fanatics who say that loss shouldn't be held against jordan because he wasn't in "basketball shape" (Chris Broussard) or that the series should be seen as some kind of fluke because they swept them the following year. Even with their flawed personnel, it wasn't the 2007 Cavs against the Spurs in the finals. The Bulls could've realistically beaten magic, but they didn't, and whenever that happens, the superstars get the blame.

For the LeHaters I will give them this argument and say that, if this is Jordan’s low playoff moment, compare it to the several LeBron failure examples. Top seed in East twice during his original Cavs tour and failed to even make the finals either year. And, then, the infamous 2011 NBA finals. LeBron’s poor play is the primary reason they lost that series to Dallas. So I am ok not trying to excuse Michael’s low point here. He more than offset that by being the best player on 2 different 3 peats. And he didn’t pick up his bags and move on from Super Team to Super team to try and collect championships. LeBron can glory hound all he wants- he will always come up short compared to Jordan.
