Thank you Jeff and Sophia for teaching and singing in a pure natural speech based style rather than the normal irritatingly overly nasal style that most of the musical theatre singers utilize today, typical of Ethel Mermon, who basically belted everything but in a great healthy way.albeit limited in colour. I saw a whole broadway show sung in that way and after a while I just couldn't stand it. Twang is not necessarily nasal which denotes a type of closure in the nose and in the 'gn' region of the palatte and compresses the harmonics into a restricted overly vibrated sound.. after a while is just unbearable for me to hear. It limits the expressivity of vocal colours and it will block the path to the soul.. So thank you for making singing natural, relaxed, mixed and expressive again in the style of Rosemary Clooney, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Perry Como, Ella Fitzgerald and Doris Day and modern singers of today who can sing well.

Thank you Sarina for your well thought out and kind comment! I agree with you that much of the belt style we hear today is too twang based. This is why I incorporate a lot of head resonance first, bofore connecting the belt, which in turn keps the thraot open and free. I hope you are subscribed to the channel and please be sure to turn on the notifications button. Peace and happy singing to you!

When Sophia came to Jeff she was very confused from so many different teaching methods.. Some coaches said sing only in your head voice, others encouraged only sing in your belt voice. Jeff was able to teach Sophia how to switch and blend the beautiful sounds you hear in the video. Jeff your amazing because you truly care about your students and love what you do and we couldn't be happier with what you have done with Sophia. She has learned how to sing in the healthiest way possible even while having strep Jeff's methods helped Sophia through a weekend of performances. Thank you -

I used to only use my head voice, and now I'm tying to use my chest voice but I'm struggling with technique, none of it has carried over. How do I get a better balance between them?

The magic of true headvoice (and it's true understanding of it)!! ... and, of course, the great combination of a great teacher and beautifully-voiced student. Bravo!
I hope more and more teachers study the concept of the thin edges of the folds (this used to be the norm, but no more, unfortunately)... I know too many teachers that feel proud of their master's degree when, in fact, all they do is make their female students sing everything in falsetto (calling this headvoice) and their males belt everything because they have no idea how to train the passagio. I can't believe that now at days teachers can graduate from school without knowing how to train someone's headvoice!!!
    Thank you, Mr Stanfill!

Thank you so much! My wonderful teacher of 19 Maestro David Jones taught me the importance of building the head-voice for both male and female singers. It's what saved my own voice so many years ago.
Sophia will very much appreciate this comment! Peace and joy and happy singing to you :-) Jeff

    It's not simple to say
That most days I don't recognize me
That these shoes and this apron
    That place and its patrons
Have taken more than I gave them
    It's not easy to know
I'm not anything like I used be, although it's true
I was never attention's sweet center
    I still remember that girl
    She's imperfect, but she tries
She is good, but she lies
    She is hard on herself
She is broken and won't ask for help
She is messy, but she's kind
She is lonely most of the time
She is all of this mixed up and baked in a beautiful pie
She is gone, but she used to be mine
It's not what I asked for
Sometimes life just slips in through a back door
And carves out a person and makes you believe it's all true
    And now I've got you
And you're not what I asked for
If I'm honest, I know I would give it all back
For a chance to start over and rewrite an ending or two
For the girl that I knew
    Who'll be reckless, just enough
Who'll get hurt, but who learns how to toughen up
When she's bruised and gets used by a man who can't love
    And then she'll get stuck
And be scared of the life that's inside her
Growing stronger each day 'til it finally reminds her
To fight just a little, to bring back the fire in her eyes
That's been gone, but used to be mine
    Used to be mine
She is messy, but she's kind
She is lonely most of the time
She is all of this mixed up and baked in a beautiful pie
She is gone, but she used to be mine

wow what a great voice! i've always wanted to learn how to sing properly and hopefully i'll start taking lessons starting next year. i'm a 19 years old girl with no experience with singing but would love to learn how, plus i LOVE LOVE LOVE musicals and I'm obsessed with musical theatre songs. I was wondering, if i started to take singing lessons once a week every week, how long (on average) would it take me to be able to sing musical theatre and a song like "the wizard and I" from the musical Wicked? Is there a specific vocal teacher that i need to be looking for? like a lyrical/classical vocal teacher?

I'm classically trained and find it impossible not to use head voice above my break. I feel like learning head voice wrecked my ability to sing in other styles. I ways sound operatic.

    • @JeffAlaniStanfill
      @JeffAlaniStanfill  11 месяцев назад

Samantha, for classically trained singers I use the meow scale on a 5-8-5-3-1 or a variation of it. Check out my most recent tutorial “How to Sing Defying Gravity” and you will see my student Julia using a variation of the meow scale. It is the best way to encourage a more chest like quality above the break. You must allow the exercise to be a little on the ugly side of the sound. One of the biggest pitfalls of classical singers is the inherent desire to sound pretty at all times. When developing a chest mix, we have to allow more twang and a slightly “uglier” sound to build the connection above the break. I hope that helps you! And thanks for watching.
