Hello, I received my Gift Card, Thank You Very Much, Great sale, Keep the videos coming they are Excellent. Your videos have taught me so Much. Can't wait till Spring.
It has been a somewhat mild winter here in Maine, which is good for us beekeepers. I just checked my hives yesterday. All 9 are alive and thriving. Just 8 more weeks to go before we start the spring splits.
I love it when you talk about bees I learned so much I used to have a fear of them now I don't my neighbor has bees I often go see him and talk about what I have learned bees are not stupid insects ! I held a queen in my hand I also they take care of her ! So Gentle Take care !
We over winter 5 frame deep colonies here in Baltimore...but we top them off with syrup as they fly the dry sugar off as trash. The entrances have to be 1/2 inch here or mice get in and destroy combs and bees!!!
So enjoyed the bee chat. Should have come later I guess as was too busy to ask questions as y'all were kept busy. I'm across the mountain so I'll definitely be back. And love the videos 👍
Morale is.an issue in wintering bee hives so I just whisper ecouraging words into the entrance at around sunset. "You can do it. Bzz Bzz buzz buzz bzz".
For feeding dry sugar I build risers and put sugar cakes directly on the frames. I dont think they would go up into a feeder like that here. However dry cakes on the bars they eat no problem. The top of the cluster will be touching them.
Just last week in northern Ohio we had a 48° day and the bees were flying and bringing in pollen. I’m sure the vets aren’t surprised but this rookie was. We have had a few snowfalls so I was very surprised to see pollen
Bob, st Augustine Florida. I have 1 gallon of 1to1 sugar water on 8 hives, in 3 days, 3 of the hives are bone dry, while the other 5 have plenty of syrup left. What does this tell me ? 3 week hives ? 3 strong hives ? Thank you, great videos!
the venting moisture in the cold, you quoted how big /small the reduced entrance should be at... would the reduced entrance size be different in a cold winter state like up north, or out west that get a lot of snow in winter? (Sorry this is kind of unfair to ask since you are in the South...) Like your videos!
Great video David, it's gonna be a chilly 85 tomorrow here in SW Florida. I wish we had more people doing videos further South. Would you do dry sugar this far south?
Why winter losses of bee colonies are so high in U.K and U.S, is there any easy, meaningful explanation of the situation? I mean in comparition to other countries…
David, I don't use reducers. I have screen across the front and let them propolis what they want. David I put sugar on top of my double deep nucs. This year I'm trying a few single nucs. I made sure that they had 3 and a half frames of honey and put sugar on top. Don't know if that's enough honey but they had brood in the other one and a half frames in the last week of October. Good luck with the winter, I think you are going to get a cold winter this year.
You're right, midnight is 12AM. I can see how it is a little confusing though, 9PM, 10PM, 11PM, 12. The numbers don't start over until 1AM. Additionally, when people say midnight, they're usually referring to the previous day. It is less confusing if you look at 24-hour time, because you never hit 24; you go from 23 to zero and start over. To help me remember, I would always ask what would 12:01 be? If 12:01 is AM, then so is 12:00. Hopefully that helps any viewers that find it confusing. Next step: Teaching people the difference between 12:00 EST, and 12:00 EDT!

How would you feel about mixing some ultra bee into the dry sugar you feed for winter?
Just gotta say it’s good to be back, first.

Good tips David. What are your thoughts on mouse guards? I’m in cold CT where critters are looking for warmth!
