Just found out about Elliott, and I'm sad that I found him too late. His music is amazing. It matches my moods and emotions. His voice is amazing. Long live Elliott Smith
Elliot Smith recaptures a sense of magic I haven't felt since I first listened to songs by The Beatles when I was a kid. This is the music I've been looking for... it's weird to describe.
This song and "St. Ides Heaven" are probably my favorite Elliott Smith songs and I love everything he wrote. This song's vocals and picking style kind of stands out to me and reminds me of Nick Drake's "Hanging on a Star" which is my favorite Nick Drake song.
his music is so timeless. the feeling that it creates in me is indescribable. i could stumble across a song of his that i've never heard, and feel like i've found an old friend...just like i could listen to a song that i've had on repeat for 3 days, and feel like i'm discovering something brand new. he mixes magic into his music.
To my Elliott is one of the greatest musical geniuses of history. Would have to remember every day. Once a day listening to one of his beautiful songs.
Ghost of your smile is always looking for New bodies to haunt And it's been here, it is up here He's hanging around and he'll float for a while Gradually gone It's pleasing and freezing While I wonder what it is you're after Keeping company with this disaster You looked all over town, got turned around To walk back through the mud The kind you had left behind you Everybody's the same in this long knowing game Where every new blood gets time to become resigned Now I wonder what it is you're after Keeping company with this disaster Why you never try to tame your master You just blow through the coals Blow through the coals Till everyone knows That your smile is just a ghost The ghost of your smile was seen on a body in the park It's old news, you see that it's no use You're waiting to start, waiting to light Wait until dark I told you man I told you While I wonder what it is you're after Keeping company with this disaster Why you never try to tame your master
Yeah youve got to watch listening to his music. The dark edge of it is quite seductive. I really love it, its so creative but you got to watch not to identify with it, just appreciate the beauty and his poetry
His songs are an experience. There like a fullfiled painting full of life in its purest form. The feeling are perfectly expressed in overwhelming simplicity like he took the really core of it and made it into song. But there more than a static painting. There a living piece of art reflecting the mind and its fears and anxietys of a person. Like a river full of emotion disapointment hope and sadness fluently moved by the harmonie of sound in a circle to set his spirit into sound
elliott you are amazing and i hope that write now you are somewhere making more great music!! Your words are haunting and beautiful and powerful! Your melodies are moving and bittersweet! You are greatly missed and will always be in my heart! I love you Elliott! Even through all the pain you went through, you managed to make wonderful, amazing music!
since i saw the movie of "Good Will Hunting", his musics has been giving my life more colorations....those melodies....thank you for sharing my weak minds.
i used to like elliott when i first heard him, but 2 years later it's completely different now. He's not just another musician I like. his music has such a serious effect on me. he's just amazing.
All the recordings on New Moon were from the period between 1994 and 1998 when Elliott was still signed to Kill Rock Stars. New Disaster specifically was from the same sessions as Either/Or.
It makes me sad that I did not discover Elliott until after his death like many people, and how I wish I could go back. My brother put in the Elliott Smith CD on the way to school one morning and ever since then I just couldn't get enough. He then told me that Elliott was gone.I did not want to believe him that such beauty could be taken away, but it is true.I try to tell anyone who will listen about Elliott because his music is medicine.I love it when I hear that new people have discovered him
Sooo freakin true. I think sadly too many of us kids live his heartache for the world, humanity, lack of humanity in the world, the sad state of things just like he does anyways. Not through impersonation, just through similar insight. Beautiful advice though JiubLink.
This undoubtedly added years to his life. Depression is not a lifestyle and those who romanticize it haven't experienced it first hand. Romanticizing depression is therefore not a danger because it is characteristic of those who dont actually suffer from major depression and who arent really at risk.
and if that were to actually come true, i'd be thrilled, but things arent lookin so good for me now, but thank you :) &' R.I.P Elliott Smith, ur music has gave me a new perspective on life
This sounds exactly like a friend of mine. Her smile is a disaster to the passion life of almost all guys I know. And, its totally natural, I believe she never tried to taunt her ''master''. She seems to be hard to felt in love, I really don't know whats she looking after...
What is the warning of his music? Don't be born with a depressive disposition? Don't be short, homely , sensitive? His depression was a consequence of the inalterable conditions of his life. Fortunately for him, he was also endowed with the industry (though making music was for him effortless by his own admission) and talent to transmogrify his depression into beautiful, poignant, and sincere music.
I'm not comparing. I just stated my change of musical taste because of Elliott Smith. My comment just happened to get dissected, which was not my intention. Anyway, beautiful song.
@Graciefrance No, it doesn't seem fair that the man who tried to kill himself more than once and failed, then got clean of his drug habits, poor eating habits was murdered by his girlfriend.
@breeeegs nick drake! eerie how the best musicians die tragically...but i just found out about elliott smith. he's growing on me the same way nick drake did a year ago
he was murdered.. dont just assume he stabed himself several times without "hesitation marks" just cause his music was sad.. read the coroners report.. his supposed suicide note sounds nothing like him.. his bitch gf did it. i miss him so much.. such a good friend to me

I love St Ides heavan too it may be my favourite, the vocal on this is gorgeous though, would have been a real shame if it never got on an album

Ghost of your smile is always looking for
New bodies to haunt
And it's been here, it is up here
He's hanging around and he'll float for a while
Gradually gone
It's pleasing and freezing
While I wonder what it is you're after
Keeping company with this disaster
You looked all over town, got turned around
To walk back through the mud
The kind you had left behind you
Everybody's the same in this long knowing game
Where every new blood gets time to become resigned
Now I wonder what it is you're after
Keeping company with this disaster
Why you never try to tame your master
You just blow through the coals
Blow through the coals
Till everyone knows
That your smile is just a ghost
The ghost of your smile was seen on a body in the park
It's old news, you see that it's no use
You're waiting to start, waiting to light
Wait until dark
I told you man
I told you
While I wonder what it is you're after
Keeping company with this disaster
Why you never try to tame your master
elliott smith music always have an effect in my mood (and not always for the best) but still i cant stop listening to him
You speak the absolute truth. I feel the same way.
Isabelle Parker he speaks the words i cannot fathom but feel. Elliott Smith says what i can't.

He is the best. And it's more than a music it's a story
such a soothing and melancholic song. Love it so much
the sound of his voice as if it where in pain literally gives me chill bumps when he gets to that.
Best lyricist of our time.
Thank you for putting this up, I haven't heard it before. RIP Elliott.
I can almost bawl. This is way too beautiful.
he was an amazing person and musician.. he'll always be one of my favourites
since i saw the movie of "Good Will Hunting", his musics has been giving my life more colorations....those melodies....thank you for sharing my weak minds.
One of my favorite songs.

Eliot such a great musician, the words are so touching me.
elliotts music just reaches out and embraces the listener

RESPECT from France
The best song writer, his music is magnifique
I don't see how either of them could even be compared to one another. They were both doing something completely different artistically.
beautiful song..
we miss you man.....
what a beautyful song...

I'm so gonna check out the whole album omg
proper awesome, pure genius
It's pleasing and freezing. God, this is one of his more introspective numbers. He sweeps me up.
I love this so much:)
Now I remember why I always called Elliott a genius, after listening to this song.
Rest in peace.
Rest in piece.
Sooo freakin true. I think sadly too many of us kids live his heartache for the world, humanity, lack of humanity in the world, the sad state of things just like he does anyways. Not through impersonation, just through similar insight. Beautiful advice though JiubLink.
What a beauty.
So haunting and so beautiful. RIP Elliott.
Sometimes I wish Elliott Smith were still alive, but he's resting now. ♡
there is beauty in sadness because at least you can feel, some people deal with empathy in different ways some make fun others just try to understand.
love you elliott
xo

100th person to rate it awesome :)
Good lord he was bloody amazing...
This song makes me want to curl up into a ball and rock back and forth to the beat.
im beautifully depressed, one of my favorite songs to play right now.
and if that were to actually come true, i'd be thrilled, but things arent lookin so good for me now, but thank you :)
&' R.I.P Elliott Smith, ur music has gave me a new perspective on life
Why wouldn't "beautiful" and "depressing" go together? Every aspect of life is beautiful. Without sadness, their wouldn't be happiness.. and so on.
that deepest things makes me unpleasent. it effects me lot
oh my god, what a beautiful tune, how can you make the guitar weep?
This sounds exactly like a friend of mine. Her smile is a disaster to the passion life of almost all guys I know. And, its totally natural, I believe she never tried to taunt her ''master''. She seems to be hard to felt in love, I really don't know whats she looking after...
He turned 41 yesterday.
We miss you.
you should write a book, what you just said was superb
the greatest
You turned 41 yesterday.
We miss you.
Thank you Elliott.
I'm glad I stumbled upon Elliotts music... Kurt Cobain was my fav songwriter until I found Elliott
@weslyhook67 on that same note he also spelled his name wrong. who ever wrote the suicide note forgot the second t in Elliott. kinda weird.
reely amazing song.. i wish he had gotn to make a video for this song :'(
what is the instrument that joins in the refrain at 2.25? some kind of organ?
Rest In Peace.
It doesn't seem fair does it??
Wow. Amazing Song.
i like it
'I told you man, I told you'

I really love Kurt, but Elliott just hits it closer to home for me.
Taken from the world too soon
My friend said that this song reminded him of me...
The song is beautiful, its meaning is depressing.
And it is such a good song.I don't know why he never played.
Mmmmm.. Elliott Smith is my melancholy muse.
agree
Don't give up. Life is waiting for sadness to pass by.
like it
I'm not comparing. I just stated my change of musical taste because of Elliott Smith. My comment just happened to get dissected, which was not my intention. Anyway, beautiful song.
@Bendrix27 You sounded sophisticated until the last sentence, lol.. no offence.
I know I shouldn't be, but this comment has me rolling.
Elliott is WAY better than Cobain.
I was clarifying b/c I brought up Kurt and Elliott.
you just have save me from myself...
@gkamano AA is a cult if I've ever seen one. Stay strong and stay clean but most importantly don't join a cult. I wish you well my friend.
everbody's the same in this long no-win game.
@Graciefrance No, it doesn't seem fair that the man who tried to kill himself more than once and failed, then got clean of his drug habits, poor eating habits was murdered by his girlfriend.
yep, I think it is
Looks like 4 people don't know how to turn their speakers on.
@breeeegs nick drake! eerie how the best musicians die tragically...but i just found out about elliott smith. he's growing on me the same way nick drake did a year ago
get it straight people..... elliott smith was & still is a gift from god. make no mistake!
@JiubLink Feels like a warning from himself, you're certainly a clear sighted person.
i have empathy for your comment.
do you know SUMO? check out ' Warm Mist' or 'Brighton Past' in youtube.
Luca is a hidden gem.

@JiubLink Quite harder done than said, man!
@JiubLink In certain situasions the pain can be a good thing
@JiubLink yes..
I can't believe these fools are comparing them
Congrats Elliott (one day too late).
WHEN DID I SAY U DID?
don't impersonate [emulate?] it".
Did someone just earn their MSW or maybe a bachelor's in clinical psych?
i havent been concieved yet
my parents havent been born yet
he was murdered.. dont just assume he stabed himself several times without "hesitation marks" just cause his music was sad.. read the coroners report.. his supposed suicide note sounds nothing like him.. his bitch gf did it. i miss him so much.. such a good friend to me

Elliott smith and cheap 7-11 cigarettes.
thats how I'll forget about you.
@Bendrix27 Guys like him will always exist, on every video. Probably kids, just ignore them
