First to 5th to first and EPIC 0.09sec win in Spec Miata bump drafting Classic at Daytona!

- Epic, wheel to wheel, tight Spec Miata racing between Danny Steyn, Todd Lamb, CHip Van Vurst, Alex Acosta, Jason Fichter. Steyn starts on pole, gets shuffled back to 5th, and comes through for the win on the last lap, by 0.09 seconds over Jason Fichter! Van Vurst 3rd, Lamb 4th and Acosta 5th. Steyn, Acosta and Van Vurst running on Toyos. Lamb and Fichter on Hoosiers.
Danny Steyn races SCCA and NASA events in both Spec Miata and Super Touring Lite cars. His cars are prepared by OPM Autosports, his SM is powered by Rossini Racing Engines, his STL is powered by Nelson Racing Engines, and both cars are stopped courtesy G-Loc Brake Pads, with contingency support from Hoosier Racing Tire, Toyo Tires and Mazda Motorsports.

Very nice. I remember the first time I raced in daytona with my f440, I could not believe how bumpy the banks were but it was still fun. Thanks for sharing, God bless you
glad you enjoyed it Joaquin. Daytona is a very special place to race, and in Spec Miata it requires a totally different strategy to win. I mean, where else do you apply the brakes as you exit the corner onto the main straight and slow down so your teammate can get to your bumper and push??? But without doing that, its tough to win there!!!

Hey, what is your tire pressure you use in those toyos on that track?
Drivers have quite a range of pressures that they prefer on the Toyos. Some like lower pressures to give more grip in the infield (33-35psi), and some like higher pressures to reduce rolling resistance on the banks (36-40psi). It is definitely a matter of personal choice. I am continually adjusting trying to find what works with me, and it was my first time on Toyos at Daytona, so I have a LOT more experimentation to do
Not that I don't want to watch your videos but are there any other good spec Miata RUclips channels I should check out so that I can watch them as well as watch yours? I can't get enough!
Also is the bump draft super sketchy mid bank?
@@bmxkelowna Hi Logan - thrilled that you are enjoying the videos and my channel. in terms of other good channels, Preston Pardus puts some up every now and then, and Charles (Chuck) Mactutus does the same as well. In terms of bumping on the bank, no its not sketchy. However I wouldn't do it in the rain on slicks though!!!!
Great finish mate! Huge win! Question: Once the 07 got by you I think I saw you turn the radiator fan on (correct?) and then a bit later the next lap you flipped on the heat or maybe something else? Curious to hear what that was and what it was for. Out west here our cars get super hot and if it's an effort to reduce cooling I'd love to know:)
Good catch Christian. yes on the banked oval at Daytona, a car that is running at 185F in the infield can easily get up to 235F by the start finish line in lone lap if it pushes the entire way from T6, through the bus stop all the way to the finish line. So you will see us bump drafting slightly off-axis, and signaling when we need to do the switcheroo to cool the following car. And yes, at around 7:05, I opened the dial to let water run through the heater core and put the "defrosting" fan onto max - that small amount of extra radiator and forced ventilation helps cool the water, but it make is REALLY HOT in the car!!!!

I'm hoping to build my track car into a spec Miata and go racing next season. I'm having a helluva time finding a hardtop right now. Do the rules require OEM, or are aftermarket allowed? I noticed the vertical metal bars on the rear window of the white car your were running with, what are those? Thanks!
Hey Matthew - personally I recommend buying a fully sorted car, and keeping you street car as a daily driver. You can buy a fully sorted 1.6NA for $8-$12k, a fully sorted regional winning NB 1.8 for around $15-$20k, and a fully sorted national Hoosier Super Tour winning NB 99 or VVT from around $25-$35k. There is no way you can build your own car for the same money!
