very nice reaction, thank you! xiu xiu is still making music, released a new album a few weeks ago lol. shaping up to be one of my favorites this year ! re: the band name and the movie, this is what wikipedia had to say about that - "In Stewart's description, the film's theme is that of no resolution-that awful things happen to the protagonist throughout the film and she ultimately dies, tragically, at the end. The band found its first tracks to match the "rotten realness" spirit of the film, "that sometimes life turns out with a worst possible case scenario"." i do see that "rotten realness" in their noise + lyricality also recently, jamie stewart (the lead singer) has started going by they/them pronouns - i believe most of genius and other sites that haven't been updated still use he/him, but thought you should know for future reactions!
I don't know if you ended up looking up the song meaning, but it's based (indirectly) on Jamie's mother - according to Jamie, she would walk around piers at night and offer people money to kill her because she was too afraid to do it herself. A lot of Xiu Xiu's early music essentially acts as an ultra-personal diary for the large amount of tragic things that were happening in their life at this time, lyrically anyways.
Thank you. Saw them live several times, ages ago in France, I wish they'd come back... (Suha is by far the saddest one)
xiu xiu is still releasing! The new album dropped a couple weeks ago, thanks for the reaction
