  • Crews in San Francisco have begun patrolling the streets and clearing homeless encampments. This comes a few days earlier than originally planned after the mayor said sweeps would start in August.
The mayor has doubled down on something she said last week when she told KTVU the plan was to make it uncomfortable for people living on the streets so that they would take the city up on its offer for shelter and services.

But it was the Supreme Court that just recently made the ruling on clearing encampments. California and other states like Oregon couldn't make a move like this until now.
Those unhoused need to take the city up on the shelters, because living on the streets longterm, shouldn't be an option.

No shit - what’s _your_ solution? Not enough room in the jails, states refuse to fund long-term rehab programs, states refuse to enforce laws/arrest drug dealers, constant influx of new homeless, shelters are havens for drugs/violence/theft, states refuse to do anything to help make housing cheaper, states refuse to build tiny homes for the homeless, etc. etc. Until we root out the corruption at the very top, nothing will change.

Who wishes as a child to grow up and live in a tent on a dirty sidewalk in a large, noisy, often frightening city and rely on sporadic handouts from strangers or volunteers? You actually think that this was a goal, a choice which was made voluntarily? The shelter format needs to be updated to acknowledge the fact that many would prefer NOT to be in a large hall bunk bed arrangement. This seems like so obvious that a school kid could figure it out. There are those who would prefer to have the privacy of their tent, and there are the rest of the population who don't want people living in tens on sidewalks, and there's a ton of empty commercial buildings and warehouses. So, let people live in tents inside these buildings, with security / supervision and some basic services, and then take it from there. Start thinking outside the box, folks, because this sh*t's taking forever to get fixed.
