    back in 2015 an EF4 went through the city right next to mine on the day after christmas. like you could see it across the lake separating my city from where it hit. just having it that close was scary enough, but considering i drive through that area fairly regularly, seeing the damage afterward was like... there's honestly just no words to describe it.
    every season is tornado season here in north texas tbh.

    back in Dec, 05 there were tornados here in central Kansas. I remember sitting on my back porch and the sirens start going off, my roommate and i looked at each other with bewilderment. No damage here in manhattan but still weird even for Kansas. snowed that week too if i remember right. A few years ago it snowed here in early May too. We get a bit of everything here, even earthquakes and hurricane leftovers.

    I remember roughly around 2008ish in the winter time we had a outbreak of tornadoes occur in sw Missouri, the tornado passed just to the south of my old house and then another tornado formed to the nw part of the community i once lived in, killing a 80 plus old lady. That tornado was worse than the one by my home, heavy destruction of trees and homes was insane.

    I live in Washington State, which in the past few years has experienced a few December tornados (this is really odd anyways because we don't really get tornados here) which hasn't really been a thing before. New winter hazards for an area more concerned about the rare giants, that is earthquakes and volcanoes.

    One unusually muggy December day in Virginia, 2019, I was in high school when a tornado warning went on. Stuck with three classes worth of students hiding in a windowless classroom. Even through multiple layers of cinder block, we could hear the wind and rain. Weather update, a funnel cloud landed a few miles away. It is coming awfully close. THUMP THUMP. Branches from nearby trees hit the roof. It went directly overhead. An eerie quiet settled. The AC unit on the roof broke, a branch got lodged in it. The tornados left but could still come back. Now to wait out the rest of the storm. Roads to the school were ruined, so even the people that decided to drive home then got stuck. Inside the classroom it was very stuffy and very boring. After the main excitement of the evening, yes evening at this point, no one was prepared to talk as we processed what the outside world might look like. No windows also means no signal to the outside world. But at least theres somewhere to sit, its better than the hallways. Around 5pm parents could now pick up their kids if they could get to the school. The busses wont be able to start the three hour cycle between the schools for another hour. The high school got picked up at 7pm that night.

    Winter weather has been garbage the past few years. This winter had a lot more snow than usual and was not blazing hot like it was in 2016 and we got snow in the middle of spring. And we had a tornado last week with zero warnings from phones or the new siren they put in nearby. So yeah weather's been wacky for everyone I guess.

    that early january severe weather outbreak of 2023 was the first time i had ever took shelter in an interior room. i was at my aunt's house alone and i believe it was about 11 in the morning when i got the tornado warning and they were saying radar confirmed rotation basically right on top of the neighborhood. i remember just pushing everything out of the closet in a panic not caring how much of a mess i made and sitting there in the closet crying and texting with my mom. im SO grateful there was only bad wind damage to the trees and outdoor furniture, made me think "huh, i love tornadoes until there's one trying to form on top of me."😅

    We had a veterans day tornado few years ago.
    It was unpredicted, out of nowhere it became dark, then heavy rain with pea size hail then the winds, finally the storm sirens as it went by at the same time.
    Another time a local weather man said chance of severe weather. As I looked out my window about mile away was small tornado 🌪 8n.perfect form light gray in color traveling along or near to.

    Dudeee I was in between the tornado that came up from Tennesee and the new mesovortex that ended up putting down the one that went through BG. I have footage where you can see it moving over me while the long track is just a little to my north ripping up northern Logan county. That was an intense night but nothing like New Years. At least on Dec 10th I could look at radar and see what was happening. You couldn't tell anything on New Years and it was terrifying. One minute there was an EF2 in Hopkinsville, the next there wasn't. Then it put that little EF0 down in BG for half a second or so. That was one crazy QLCS.
    I wasn't scared on the 10th, but on New Years, I was terrified.

    Aside from the December 10th, 2021 tornado that hit Mayfield, Kentucky; I was rather shocked by the tornado that hit Washington, Illinois on November 17th, 2013. The tornado that hit Washington, Illinois occurred just eleven days before Thanksgiving; and as a result the residents of Washington had gone from being excited for Thanksgiving and Christmas to feeling helpless and heartbroken. To add to their misery it snowed a week after the tornado; which hindered cleanup efforts.

    Explain why a 2017 EF2 hit Northeast PA (Wilkes Barre) during whats supposed to be the coldest part of winter on February 25th followed by a late winter blizzard on March 14th that dropped 3+ feet of snow in the same area. My birthday Dec 21 of 2016, the first day of that winter season, was in the upper 70s it also was on Christmas here. The tornado was on the ground for several miles and lasted almost a half hour traveling from Wilkes Barre in Luzerne County and crossing into Lackawanna County. Its rare enough to have a winter tornado in the US as it is but among the coldest areas of the country where the topography being a valley city makes it lesser prone to tornadoes to begin with getting hit is unheard of.

    at 1:10 you mention wind shear. Never understood how that horizontal action translates to the vertical column that is the tornado.

    • @muffin3610
      @muffin3610 2 года назад +1

      Basically, vertical wind shear creates horizontal vorticity (think of it like a long, horizontal tube of rotating air). This tube gets tilted into being vertical by the storm's updraft. It's then strengthened by being stretched thinner, making it rotate even faster ( due to the conservation of angular momentum), which helps in tornadogenesis.
