  • Troy Marden enjoys a walk through the home garden of a plant collector/conifer enthusiast. These two men educate us on quite a number of specimens that range in size from miniature to huge! There's a lot of variations in texture and color also. To WATCH full episodes, visit www.volunteergardener.org

I’d never had much interest in conifers growing up because all I ever saw were the most common, boring, unkempt, spider infested fence-line behemoths every home builder planted in every backyard. I didn’t yet know what I know now about the variety & beauty found in this family of plants. As I’ve gotten older, acquired my own house/land, become interested in horticulture rather than simply gardening, I’ve grown to love conifers. RUclips channels like yours have been so helpful in showing me so many different cultivars, different colors, different shapes/sizes & textures that lend themselves perfectly to so many varying landscape styles. It’s entirely possible & appropriate to have a beautiful conifer in an English Country Garden. I actually hope to add some dwarf conifers to my front yard garden at some point. It’s always a work in progress. So thanks for showing me the beauty & potential of conifers again!

Slow growing doesn’t equal dwarf conifer. Good point to make. Note to self get a cryptomeria japonica. I know they grow well in the SC Upstate. Kilgore-Lewis House has some.🌲

I would LOVE to find a weeping conifer for my yard in zone 8 (N. La.) Not much to choose from around here, so I don't know what will grow here.

I believe that first cryptomeria you called "elegans nana" is actually "globosa nana" ...Bucholtz has the old one in his display and it is not the same as yours...

every household should have enough space for planting a tree.
