Grab a 3-Head tape deck, it is by far the cheapest alternative, no modifications are needed. However, you will need either a DAW or a Hardware mixer + plus a way to 'pause' your signal.

This is great! I had a three head machine a few years ago, really great for playing with tape loops as well! You can cover the erase head and continue to layer on new layers while monitoring off the tape.
