Disney Dark Age: Worst to Best
The ‘70s and ’80s were troubling times for Disney. After Walt died in 1966, the studio found itself in a period of uncertainty. This was the period often referred to as the “Dark Age” and the “Bronze Age.” This era was the first time the animation studio had to operate without Walt’s hand guiding them. Not only did they lose Walt, but they were also beginning to see many of their legendary animators retire, paving the way for a new generation of artists to join the company. During this time, Disney was often conflicted between whether to fall back on their legendary older talent or give the castle’s keys to this younger generation of animators. The movies of this era, unsurprisingly, were just as all over the place as the studio itself was! They adapted everything from classic fairy tales to more contemporary book series. Some of these movies have become classics to Disney fans, but many appear to have been forgotten. Are these movies better off that way, or are some worth a reevaluation?

Forget what place the Fox and the Hound is at, making me cry at the ending is one of the best emotions and feelings I ever got out of my childhood
Fox, and The Hound was such a pretty decent, and underrated movie man.
I remember some of the film but I don't remember the ending. I just remember that I cried
Robin Hood is my personal favorite of the Disney Dark Age movies. I just find it to be a fun movie, and while the recycled animation can be distracting, it doesn’t harm the overall experience too much for me.
Same here. I remember growing up singing the songs while in school. Good times!
I liked Robin hood too I really loved how fluently Robin leaped and moved around
My personal favorite of the dark age is fox and the hound with Robin hood as a close 2nd
Same
Aristocats was my childhood! My cousins and I played aristocats at my grandmas house until she died in 2003. We would watch that tape EVERY year, during Christmas break as kids. Good times rip 🪦 grandma 👵🥺🙏
Man, the Aristocats was so witty, and such a classic movie.
My condolences my she RIP 🥺👵
Aristocats is the best dark age movie and my deepest condolences go to you
I love those cats
Oliver & Company is the most criminally underrated Disney movie ever. It should've been higher on your list.
That and the Rescuers Down Under
@@darkstarmoonshadow8892 That's actually a Renaissance movie
Yes!
@Trevor Maharaj I absolutely agree with thay
Man, I loved the Aristocrats as a kid.
Same, here man when I had it on VHS back in the 90's.
Me too; it has so much going for it. Especially the artistry.
Honestly, the dark, and edgy Disney movies were pretty good, and kickass man... Disney wouldn't wanna do this nowadays until it's one of the animated shows on Disney Channel or Disney XD.
The closest we get to darkness from Disney animation nowadays is when the villain does something really evil for Disney animated villain standards and even then that's mainly in TV shows for example Zhan Tiri's whole character, Shuriki killing Elena's parents, Ash Delgado turns on her family, and Makucha's genocidal desire to take over the Tree of Life only to kill and eat every living being there.
Ironically, The Black Cauldron is probably the BEST choice for a Live Action Remake out of everything Disney has.
.........They'd also have to just adapt the books.
Multiple Films would likely be needed.
But it could actually be done pretty good.
Can you imagine what Live Horned King would look like ?
The Great Mouse detective is underrated
Yes; especially with the Great Vincent Price voicing Ratigan!!!
Is it only I or I actually prefer most of the Disney "Dark age" movies over these more popular newer ones
I do too my friend.
Its not just you.I as well find the dark age Disney movies far better than the modern ones.I would even go as far as saying that the modern Disney movies are bad.Disney before Pixar was so rememberable.I feel like Disney survives off of Pixar. They haven't made a movie of there own without Pixar in over a decade.
There was passion in these films. They were all over the place, sure, but you could feel some sort of magic from them
My favorite from this era was Fox and The Hound
May I ask why u prefer the dark age. Bc for me personally, my favorite era is the Renaissance 1, but I do love Fox and the hound. I also like Peter Pan from the silver age and Bambi from the golden age. But the Renaissance age made my personal favorite Disney movie Lion King and many others I like such as Hercules,Mulan
@@jaelynnelson3455 There's just a charm to those movies that hasn't been replicated.
I feel like this was the animal era of Disney. And us fans love it all the same.
A lot of these movies did have animals as their protagonists, so I agree.
@@disneyvillainsfan1666 The only ones that did ne have a flesh-and-blood non-man animal as the protagonist were Jungle Book and Black Cauldron (Their protagonists were men. By men, I mean "humans" regardless of age or gender.) and Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh (its protagonist was a stuffed animal). By ne, I mean "not" and it is an old synonym for "not" that came from the Old English word ne, which means "not" or ne. Yes, not came from the word nought (it means nothing), which in turn came from ne and the word aught (it means anything).

We totally need that Good to Evil video for The Loud House!
Yes!!!!!!!!!!!

Man I loved that Winnie the pooh movie growing up.
Where’s The Loud House Good to Evil and The Casagrandes Good to Evil? We need those Good to Evil episodes!
Completely agree. Excellent video! But now, I've got a hard one for you: Disney's Golden Age, worst to best. That may be an impossible feat.
I am sad that Winnie the Pooh is so low. Pooh bear is so deeply ingrained in my early childhood. My Grans VHS heavily worn especially around the heffalump sceen as it was scary as a preschooler. I understand that it was a mix of shorts that put it there. But because of the memories of watching it a lot in afternoons after school at my grandmother's. Its hard for me to separate them and be objective. Its wrapped in nostalgia and warm memories of at my grandparents during my grade school days.
Don't worry he's judging it on the shorts aspect. Honestly overall Winnie the Pooh is probably Disney's biggest mascot outside of Mickey Mouse himself.
Pixar movies worst to best
Worst: Cars 2
Middle: Finding Nemo
Best: Ratatouille
(my opinion)
Naw, the best has to be Toy Story 3, IMO.
IMO the worst is either Cars 3 or Toy Story 4.
Cars 2 (in my opinion) is actually one of the better ones though my fav is Up
Pixar Villain Sidekicks: Evil to Most Evil
Least evil would probably be Molt or Jeff Fungus and most evil would probably be Grem and Acer.
There's not a lot of those. Maybe five or six.
@@Werten25 most evil would actually be professor Zundapp
I don’t really consider Zudnapp a sidekick. I’d say he is more the central antagonist, and by that I mean, like Randall and Al the Chicken Man, he’s not really the main villain but he drives most of the plot and does do more than just a normal sidekick would.
@@DavidRay39 No, there are quite a lot of villain sidekicks. I could give you a rundown if you like?
Disney Revival era: worst to best anyone???
the photo of the characters paying respect to Walt Disney is beautifully moving i love it
The Aristocats is a masterpiece and one of the best Disney movies of all time.
Nick Toon Mothers: Good to Evil
I love classic hand drawn animation and would love it back
Indie Studios making 2D Films: We’ve got you covered.
You can tell how iconic Disney is by the fact that I recognize having seen almost all of these growing up.
The entire reason you see so much reused animation is because it is much cheaper to recreate it.
Love all these films.
My fav is Fox and the Hound, such a great movie about growing up that has more power than critically acclaimed era films from Disney.
Out of all the Wicked Binge videos I have seen, this has got to be IMHO the best narrative video. Thank you @WickedBinge. Edit: I agree with the placing except for The Black Cauldron. IMHO, it should’ve been a bit higher.
Basil the great mouse detective, Oliver and the company and Aristocats along with Robin hood are all classics that deserve way way more praising than what they got
Totally agree with you!!!
I believe each era of Disney's movies had many many gems.
Oh yeah!! I agree. I hope Disney will one day showcase these movies more in the future.
When are you going to make one with the pixar movies? I'd love to see them get ranked
I personally think that even Pixar's WORST movie isn't that bad. Not compared to the bad movies DreamWorks and Sony Animation had to offer.
@@RealSirMikay which one is the worst in your opinion. Me? Cars 2 is the worst, but it isn’t the most atrocious thing I’ve ever seen.
Don't forget to do Golden Age and Revival Era as well!
I would on we say the revival era because there are only five golden age films
It’s good to see Brad back with WickedBinge

Black Cauldron looked pretty good though. I kind of wished it worked out.
Now we need Golden age and Revival age Worst to best
Aristocats,
Oliver and Company,
The Fox and the Hound, Winnie the Pooh,
A lot of these were my favorites growing up watching them on VHS as a little kid.
Now I'm trying to get them all on DVD.
How dare you put Winnie the Pooh so low😭😭
Jk, I respect your opinion, that movie is just my childhood ❤️
The issue is that it barely counts as a movie

Lloyd Alexander’s five-book series with The Black Cauldron should be adapted into a five season animated TV series for Netflix!
Cool!
@@philipcheung63 Exactly!
Or Disney+. Either way, I agree.
I was upset about how low Fox and the Hound were, now I realize most of the animated movies “Disney Dark Ages,” are actually pretty good.
I for one really enjoyed the Fox and the Hound. It kinda hurt me that it was so low.I feel like it at least deserved to be a little higher.Definitely not the best but it did deserve to be a little higher.
I honestly think that the Black Cauldron is good, though that might be because I watched it at a young age and didn't really think much, but I did think that Gurgi was my favorite character. And well after reading the books, I can say that maybe they could've done the story a bit different where it can some what be like the original story of the books but with the Disney twist to it. But I am pretty sure that the major reason why Black Cauldron didn't do well, was because it was seen as a dark movie at the time with the themes it was going through. But still I like the movie and I would actually like to see Disney retry it but with newer animation, as well as see about fixing some things here and there. Oh, and the movie did have its comedic moments. But still it would be good if they tried a reboot, though I wonder if anyone from Disney actually remembers it.
Nice list
I'd rank them:
8) The Black Cauldron
7) The Aristocats
6) The Rescuers
5) Oliver and Company
4) The Great Mouse Detective
3) The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh
2) Robin Hood
1) The Fox and the Hound
I still hope the Black Cauldron is featured as a world in Kingdom Hearts.
Or a remaster it
And the Horned King is the boss in the end and he should be voiced by one of these select actors
Bill Nighy
Mark Hamill
Ian McDiarmid
Robin Atkin Downs
Or Steve Blum.
Also a bizarre thing about the Aristocats was while no one gave a toss at the time it came out . In later years maybe some time in the late 80s our mid 1990s it became super controversial because of they ever one wants to be a cat musical number which I think it stupid was people just being over sensitive to avoid offending people of other cultures.
I like The Great Mouse Detective more than The Rescuers
The League of Super Evil:
Good: Lightning Liz, Neutral: Red Menace, Bad: Skullossus
Where would Frogg or Doomageddon be? They were my favs.
I personally find princess Eilonwy amazing. She is a bit sassy bit still sweet. I love her. Black Cauldron is actually one of my personal favorites. But i kind of understand it's not for everybody.
Awesome! Can you do the Revival years and Golden years next?
The Looney Tunes Show Characters: Good to Evil
The Mandalorian Characters: Good to Evil
The Black Cauldron was meant to be Disney's first *R-Rated* animated feature... I saw that somewhere, deleted scene and all. ... BUT, Katzenberg was just hired and without knowing this, he tested an early screening on families and got nothing but complaints, so they had to change the film. That's what I heard a long time ago. Somebody please correct me on any of this.
It should have been rated R
Robin Hood should've got the silver or gold. Why? It's funny, exciting and sad but it gives you a good feeling in the end. To me, the recycled animation doesn't distract me much. Sort of an Easter egg or they didn't have much money since their budget was $5 million in 1973.
Also, Friar Tuck says one of the best lines in a movie, "You thieving scoundrel!" Or "Get out of my church!"
Could you cover Disney sequels worst to best? I think that would be a good list to look into because there are very well done sequels and some not so good ones.

5. Many Adventures of Winnie The Pooh
4. The Rescuers
3. Oliver & Company

Hmmm....I was confused why "Robin Hood" would get the bronze, but....while I think it's a slightly better movie than "The Great Moust Detective" due to "Robin Hood" being a nearly perfect blend of action, drama, and comedy whilst "The Great Mouse Detective" is like 90% action, 8% horror, and 2% comedy, with little to no drama at all, I can see where you're coming from.
Here is my list and if you have a different list than you can tolerate my opinion

Robin Hood is one of my favorite Disney movie
What I couldn't remember was what kind of animal was Friar Tuck in the Disney Classic Robin Hood.
the big deal on Flewden role is on the Morva Witches on the last minute, because he is the one who makes a stand on them and triggers them to make a deal so it´s a payback on the trickery they did them before about the Black Cauldron, so it´s not brought back freely and they were forced on to bring back Gurgi to life and from within the Cauldron to show their true power. It was a hit back on their pride and annoyed them, but couldn´t harm them for the payback and the defyiance challenge to their power. which wasn´t a lame thing on them.
Flewden make the stand and challenge to the witches who just wanted to have advantage on the situation on the Cauldron, but he made them not to have it freely, and it was a very wise challenge back on them. The witches were dangerous and revengefull, but he managed to set them into a way which they couldn´t refuse and ought to do the challenge no matter how hard it was and that it was a low-hit to their pride specially to the leading witch. So it was a great big deal on him to do at last, and not little thing although it doesn´t seems easily on what he did then. So he wasn´t so useless, but to know that the audience ought to pay more attention to the witches role before that, to read how all was a total payback of the trickery they did them before and a more even legal fair one than which they did before, furtherly mostly very improvised on the very last moment, whereas the witches planned on stealthly their first dealing about the Cauldron, so Flweden challenge was even more bold and brave sudden daring on the moment - by that moment his formerly useless character finally shine up and grew on importance, people tend to forget this... but HE WAS IMPORTANT to bring Gurgi back and the true happy ending and the witches got a payback on her own!

Every single one of these movies has at least one talking animal. If you consider Gurgi to be an animal, that is (I don't even know WHAT he is). A few of them have ONLY talking animals, with few or zero human characters. The Great Mouse Detective has a tiny fraction where we hear Sherlock and Watson talk, but I don't really count that.
I would put 2 of these films in their own category. The Great Mouse Detective and Oliver and Company, should be labeled as Pre-renaissance. This is when Michael Eisner took over as CEO. These 2 films are the definite stepping stones to the renaissance era films. The Great Mouse Detective was the first to use computer animation, in the clock tower scene for the background and gears. This was a major change in animation to come.
