Against the Odds: Mono-Green Resonator (Modern)

- Last week, we had an all-Masters 25 Against the Odds poll, and in the end, it wasn't especially close: people wanted to see Commander staple Strionic Resonator doubling up some triggers! As such, we are heading to Modern this week for a deck that's looking to see if we can win some games by triggering some powerful permanents multiple times! The biggest challenge of Strionic Resonator is that, at least in some ways, it's very similar to Panharmonicon (since enters-the-battlefield abilities are technically triggered abilities). Because of this, one of the rules I set for myself in building a Strionic Resonator deck is that we'd avoid building an enters-the-battlefield trigger deck, since Panharmonicon is almost strictly better when it comes to doubling enters-the-battlefield triggers specifically, and instead focus on some of the other sweet triggers that Strionic Resonator can double! Which triggers did we choose? Can Strionic Resonator compete in Modern? Let's get to the video and find out!

bring us an awakening zone+from beyond deck
Apparently Seth has identified the issue with the Ulamogs, Emrakul, and Kozilek. When you cast them, they aren't powerful enough and need support.
We figured it out!
Finally!
I feel like this deck should play a few less win-more cards and a few more lands. It seems to lose to itself a lot from drawing Eldrazi titans when it needs to hit land drops really badly.
Sam I think two of each ulamog is also unnecessary because you just need one to win
The extra Alamos are for consistency. That said, he need few more lands to up that consistency.
hey I was that affinity player! those ratchet bombs were so good game 3. loved the deck and the vid!
SkyFoo anything on dom interest affinity players?
Seth's always against Tron, but when he casts an Ulamog he laughs maniacally like any other Tron player!
We cast our Ulamogs fairly though, with only two of each Tron land.
MTGGoldfish
>Implying that having to use half your deck for a combo (which can be torn apart easily enough) isn't fair
Tron is just fast mana. It's as fair as any other fast deck out there.
Found the Tron player
Soonerj1 lol you got me. Don't worry, my Tron deck is hardly degenerate. One of my finishers is Colossus of Akros lmao
I feel like this deck should run 24 lands, 22 seems too little for the curve.
Aaron Cao In a non ramp deck, yes. But in a ramp deck, you should count arbor elf and utopia sprawls as half a land. So in total, this deck is running “26” lands.
With so many "ramp" rely on playing lands (sprawls, expeditions, courser, tracker). I think 24-25 is more reasonable number
The way I think of ramp is probably wrong but this is how I see it. If you play rampant growth on 2 but miss your third land drop it defeats the purpose of ramping. The growth was just a tapped land that cost 2 mana. So you can't skimp too much. If your payoffs aren't good enough to pull extra weight and make up for having fewer spells then you shouldn't be ramping in the first place.
Couldn't have said it better my friend.
With so many landfall triggers, arbor elf and Utopia sprawl can't be counted properly as half lands.
I would go up two lands too.
3+ colors in the deck with strict color requirements: full boat of Field of Ruin.
1-color deck with a way to dig out utility lands, has a heavy Landfall theme, and desperately needs ways to interact: none.
Daniel Gehring field of ruin is a mana fixer Kappa
Foobix
If you look at Field of Ruin and think "Oh that's a mana fixer" then please play me in every tournament.
KAPPA
Doubling up eldrazi triggers has to be the most win more plan I've ever seen. I approve
Who could have guessed that running 22 lands with Khalni Heart would end badly?
Guess he wanted the deck to be "Against The Odds" (literally).
I feel this deck needed more lands than 22. Pretty sure every game you said "We really need a land on top"
As much as I love the idea of Resonator, it's not that great. Perhaps cut to 2-3 and add lands in its place.
lots of games with 2 lands and 4 6+ drops in hand
the other games he giggled to himself as he dropped fair and balanced eldrazi
The Green Robby
The Summoning Traps would be my first cut. So, so greedy.
Seth loses more to his own lands than anything else.
I feel the best way to abuse Strionic Resonator in a janky, Against the Odds manner wasn't doubling Eldrazi titans. While sweet, it feels unnecessary, and doubling crappy ramp effects for 2 mana a turn is really lackluster. Some other options are:
Cascade + As Foretold (Not Living End, just value, also you can double the time counter removal for Ancestral)
Morph tribal (flip triggers)
Isochron Scepter (double imprint)
Through the Breach/Champion of Rhonas + Ramp with Wurmcoil, Worldspine,
Sun Titan land destruction shell running the Boom Bust Flagstones of Trokair engine and Emeria
Alesha, Who Smiles at Death and her friends
Boros Reckoner/Stuffy Doll (double the damage triggers)
Combat Celebrant + Vigilance and Inspired
Also xenagos... fun stuff
Enchant it with Mechanized Production and copy that upkeep trigger, and then tap the token to copy it again
Kevin Dodd That requires too much mana for too little effect. Seth found out that doing nothing doesnt work from his Azor’s Elocutors set a while ago
Bryan Tan, did the Elocutors deck include resonators?
Kevin Dodd He had a do nothing strategy and he won exactly one match. And the match he won was the last match, looked like he was only playing the deck cuz he needed a win for the video
It is a little absurd how much i love watching Seth laugh his way through a match.
Ulamog the Infinite Gyre - "it's cheap". I love you, Seth.
"Ulamog the Infinite Gyre is in the deck because it's cheap" is not a sentence I ever thought I'd hear.
but as soon as you drop an eldrazi on MTGO your opponent just scoops anyways so resonators is sort of pointless XD
"Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre in the deck because it's cheap..."
Am I missing something?
Against the Odds: Trinisphere
ATownShow Trinisphere can be nuts in Legacy.
Yeah, I remember the Against the Odds: Blood Moon he did a couple of months ago
It’s always sweet when you go off Seth. Keep being you!
That sound you hear is the sound of Strionic Resonator going into every mid-tier Eldrazi-Tron deck at the same time.
I love how excited Seth gets over drawing 8 cards against ponza
thank you for putting up a game-play video for this
8:10 for games. Link is in description but didn't work on mobile for me for whatever reason.
this is such a winmore combo to begin with i can’t imagine even bothering
Deck was sweet! I definitely thought it would be some sort of infinite combo artifact deck with Paradox Engine, but this was entertaining. 😊
Seth, this deck brings me much joy and happiness, I think I'm gonna play it at my modern fnm.
What is this Stironic Resonator Seth is talking about? I only know Strionic Resonator.
"Of all the cards in magic, Emrakul is the farthest away from being a land."
Umm, Imprisoned in the Moon? That's literally Emrakul being a land. :)
(I know that's not what you meant.)
Double up Emrakul annihilator triggers, for when making them sac 6 permanents isn't enough... :)
Resonators and o rings could also be sweet not enough lands too much top end
Doubles Flagstones too. You could make a deck that revolves around O-Ring Flagstones and stuff like that. Like the old Boom-Bust decks
Ian McAbee The deck is running 26 lands.
PalPlays there is 22 lands...
Count Arbor Elf and Utopia Sprawl as half of a land.
Mana dorks and cantrips never count as lands, even "half" a land.
I didn't knew about Resonator until recently... I'm in love with this. Now to make this AND panharmonicon work... :P
Before even seeing the play through I can speculate that if you did cast an eldrazi, your opponent would most likely scoop as soon as I see it. That means you would not get to use strionic resonator
Tidehollow... Seth- "That's not a human". Because I'm sure that was the issue that game. I couldn't stop laughing.
This was a lot of fun to watch.
I'm surprised to not see any World Breakers in the list. It's a "green" Eldrazi with a cast trigger that would suck to be on the receiving end of two of them.
I literally just lost to that Infect player twice in a row right before seeing this video. WHY CANT I ESCAPE THIS HELL?!
What about ancient stirrings here? Helps you curve out and find your threats late game?
somehow you made tron, eldrazi titans, and prime time feel like fair magic
I havent even watched this yet but my first thoughts, which I had to speak aloud, upon reading the title were ""Mono-Green RESONATOR!? Surely not! Surely not."
Take out some of the top ends, cut down to one Eldrazi each, in exchange get some other top ends that can cycle for lands? Like Sylvan Bounty, for example.
Usually you want to landcycle to get more lands but against aggro match-ups the life gain becomes pretty good? It makes the draws more consistent. It also becomes a triggered ability that can be targeted, I think? Since it's on the stack and it's not considered casting a spell.
Activated ability.
This was so all or nothing depending on what happened in the game and match. It was nice to see you annihil-8 though (Get it? Cause doubled Annihilator 4).
that punt putting utopia sprawl to the bottom was so hard to watch
That seems pretty cool, but I think that we can have a better version in colorless with full tron and eldrazi temple.
Cool deck, but I think the original sin is not having enough lands to begin with… 22? I might cut two more cards for two more lands…
Seth, I'm curious about the difference between the viewer count when a video has Panharmonicon/Strionic Resonator and other videos of the same series!
I feel that those amazing and hard to fit artifacts attract so much attention!
Emrakul in this deck is the epitome of greed
That laugh at 19:15 literally killed me loool
It's like if you have Tron lands on Modo, the odds of drawing any lands at all are purposefully and drastically reduced XD
How about playing a 4of prismatic omen, so you can untap the tronlands with arbor elf?
Saffron, I'd love to see you try this deck without the tron combo. The tron lands are win-more. By the time you assemble the combo you've already won the game. I mean, in any of these games did you ever use tron mana to do something?
For now I've only saw the decktech, but do you really need annihilator 12 to win? It seems a little win-more to copy eldrazi triggers.
Looks like my kind of deck! So fun.
What about ensnaring bridge in the sideboard to help with aggro and you can destroy it when your ready to attack with one of your many destroy triggers off creatures.
Emrakul's shuffle effect on discard makes him a pseudo fetch land tbh!
22:47 till the end of the game, WOW. Reminds me of the power level of Aetherworks marvel/ulamogg in standard before the ban. Either you win awesomely or get ran over, with the added possibility of uncastable Eldrazi stuck in your hand all game.
Watching this I just wished you would take out all but 1 Strionic resonators and just add some lands! The deck seemed really cool when you weren’t casting strionic
I don't care how these matches go, I want to play this deck myself.
Would love to see Land Equilibrium in Against the Odds.
Can u resonate the fetch trigger??, woulded be very usefull in some situations i belive.
Fetches aren't triggered abilities unfortunately (since you have to tap and sac them they are activated abilities).
Why am I seeing Arbor Elf in every of your green modern decks? :D
Probably since most of our Against the Odds decks are build around expensive cards and Arbor Elf/Utopia Sprawl is the fasted way to ramp.
I expected modern gameplay not a mini commander deck
30:20
I don't get it. What am I missing. Why doesn't he tap for 4, untap tge sprawl forest and fire off the trap to try to yolo for an answer.
There's no reason to not make that play.
Edit: There's a thalia in play. Whoops
4 loses were to you not getting a third land. You could give this one a spin again upping the land count.
Guillermo Cortes I agree!
Yeah, in hindsight another land or two might have been good.
Isn't it possible to resonator a fetchland crack for 2 lands? that seems like a great ramp
Fetchlands are activated abilities, not triggered :(
Soooo.. Cycling a shefet monitor would work? I like complicated ideas.
3:16 "In the deck, because it's cheap..."
11 mana
- azusa -immortal sun
+ LAND +LAND
But playing Azusa on a mono-forest board to drop tron and play the immortal sun sounds like a lot of fun.
maybe you can cut the resonators and the inmortal sun... put 3 more lands(maybe 2 field of ruin and 1 forest) and 2 more 3-5cmc creatures (maybe anothe courser and thragtusk). Something on those lines, you still want a bunch of big creatures to hit with summoners trap but you could cut the kozilec to put maybe sundering titan or another wurmcoil .
I am aware that is no longer the "resonator deck" but really helps the go big ramp plan. Also i feel that the resonators are in general not needed here, anihilator whatever is enough no need to double it
I feel like most of the time if you can cast an eldrazi you win and resonator isn't as likely to get you to the eldrazi as just a normal ramp spell or something. Maybe oath of Nissa.
i love your brews seth! but while the idea is funny, resonator + eldrazi seems just to like a win-more combo to a monogreen eldraziramp-deck thats already to slow!
THere must be smoother ways to abuse resonator!!
There's lots of things you can double, that's for sure.
22 lands is not even close to enough with a deck with tracker, courser, Oracle, and azusa. Probably should be 24+. Would have really helped out a lot with the biggest issue this deck had. I feel like there is just value that we are missing out on
Did i just see a scoop vs bw humans where seth did not play the summoning trap that he could have cast before blockers?
Seth, I think this deck...resonates with you.
You made a landfall deck with less lands than a normal deck. Against the Seth
We're got a lot of ramp though!
30:30 trade with Thalia and cast summoning trap?
I might have tried sunbird invocation or cascade
Can't you resonate a fetch land trigger to get another land?
VictorTheLegend Resonator only works on triggered abilities, not activated ones.
Derp oh yeah, of course kkkk mind fart :p
Derp I'm actually having a bad day it's nice to see saffronolive good energy and happiness and your politeness as well... Thanks!
Derp You could copy Flagstone of Trokair!
This has got to be one of my favorite ATO ever!!! 😂
I think this deck should drop 1 Ulamog & the Immortal Sun for 2 more lands. It seems to want them with Tireless Trackers, Khalni Heart Expeditions, Coursers, etc. Being short on lands seems like a problem this deck was having the whole time.
Hey seth here an idea for against the odds in standard: that new ooze lord paired with that red enchantment that let's you flip coins for copies. Super swole oozes with a dash of chaos with that coin flip
Thumbnail is amazing
Game 2 against humans... you didn't cast summoning trap, why exactly?
Thalia, I think?
Ah, sad. Was wondering if I'd missed something and there you go :'(
Emrakul isn't the farest to be a land, with the trap in the moon card it becomes kind of a land.
"it's like a panharmonicon for eldrazi"
Make a deck that uses both resonator and panharmonicon next
I feel like if you are casting Emrakul, you are probably doing pretty well. Do you really need to double the triggers?
Sometimes Emrakul isn't enough :)
Wouldn't Resonator-ing the Emrakul trigger still only give you 1 extra turn? Same as casting 2 Time Warps on the same turn just gives you 1 extra turn... I'm confused
Obsydia 2 time warps on the same turn is 2 extra turns
Two Time Warps in the same turn gives you two turns.
MTGGoldfish please help me understand how though. It seems redundant because the trigger says "at the end of this turn". So how does that give you 2 extra turns after this turn if you only take one turn at a time.
"of all the cards in magic, Emrakul is the farthest away from being a land"
- There is Literally a card designed Specifically to turn Emrakul into a land..
Very fun to watch
This deck really resonates with me
This deck is super 'win more' and I love it
Why no champion of rhonas for the eldrazi hand draws?
Lizardoo Because he had to make room for useless resonators.
1) courser *can attack, 2) you *can* cast summoning trap for 6
20:50 Forest: Please kill me, i'm in Seth's deck
Seth, instead of doubling the enters the battlefield trigger, couldn't you double the fetchland trigger for more lands?
Luke Rentz not a triggered ability
Yeah, that would be sweet, but since you have to tap and sac the fetchland it's an activated ability and not a triggered ability.
ah, i see what I was missing. thanks for responding, and im glad we got that sweet lifegain value xD
"aand scoops it up!! Cannot beat the Emerakal!! HUUUAAH!!"
"Annihilate 12".
*Holy fuck*
Why not Gruul for Sneak Attack? Play 2R, annihilator 8 seems good.
26:00 You forgot the lore. Emrakul is now a land in the lore.
I love Seth, but damn, how many times do you need to get mana screwed before you realize there aren't enough lands in your deck? Again, huge fan, but it makes this video frustrating to watch at times
Nooooo! Play the spicy unexpected tron build!
That's for much abrew next week :)
Emrakul is not the farthest from being a land. See Imprisoned in the Moon!
