    Thank you SOOOOOOOOO much!!!!! I was devastated when my cello just went out of tune last night due to the current extreme heat in Auckland NZ. My next class is three days away when I could meet my teacher. And it is so stressful to think that I would have to go look for a luthier just for a “small” issue. I had broken my first string on my first day of cello practice. It has been stuck in my head that I would need years of training to be able to tune the pegs. But thanks to your calm and gentle video. I told myself what you’ve just said, the worst case is that I would just need to get a new string. And I did it! Although due to early arm weights training, I found it extremely difficult to wiggle the pegs in, but I did it in the end. I am over the moon now. ❤❤❤

    Thank you very much, the "wiggle" movement (4:24) helped me a lot. I tried everything but the peg always slipped, now it stays in place :)

    The reason I was scared to touch my cellos pegs were because in 6th grade I was tuning with the pegs and my A string popped on my arm.

      Omg same my D string popped in my face since i had my cello laying on its back and I was leaning over it🥲 and no surprise the reason i’m watching this video is because of the D sting 😭

    I had to just come on here and say thank you so so so so much for this tutorial! The thing that really helped me to prevent my peg from slipping was the little wiggle trick that you did. That’s the only thing that has ever worked

    Thanks for your advise. The thing I notice about your cello is that the pegs protrude a little on the opposite side. My rental was provided with the pegs flush or even recessed. The peg popped out on my first try to make an adjustment. Now, my A and C strings are floppy, probably one octave off. I also noticed the fine tuners were not evenly set (one is all the way down), so I will have to adjust those, as well, in order to try your method. I certainly didn't expect to spend so much time just getting the 4 strings in tune, my first few weeks of cello practice. Ratio is about 3:1, tuning:playing right now.

    Peter Lewy Thanks for making it less scary! I have had my cello out of the case for 1 week (new student) & after my first lesson felt fairly confident doing the initial peg + fine tuner adjustments. My online teacher told me to push in the pegs (nothing about using both hands) but I couldn’t push in the pegs at all. Several days later with humidity chgs the D string was especially low. I loosened the peg first then turned it just enough for the tuner app to show it as ‘too low’ with flickers of ‘in tune’. Then I used the fine tuners. I proceeded to use the fine tuners to get all of the strings showing ‘in tune’. Shortly after tuning I tried bowing again .& am hearing a buzzing bowing every open string. The buzz is coming from the open D string. I can’t find anything that addresses how to fix the buzzing. New cello with new strings at set-up, post is in place, bridge is perpendicular to the face, have not dropped or bumped it. What could be causing the buzzing? Hope you can help .. purchased the cello during Covid & repair shops barely open. P.S> I like your style!

    • @PLewy4

      Thanks for your kind words Suzi. I'm so glad the video was helpful. There are innumerable possible causes for that kind of buzzing. I suggest you address it with your teacher at your next lesson. He or she can guide you through some steps that can narrow down the possibilities. Some quick things you can try for yourself. Sometime there is a metal piece at the end of the endpin that can vibrate. Remember the cello is a big amplifying box that amplifies the sound of spinning strings so it can amplify anything like the sound of a button touching the back of the cello or something like that. If all else fails I would be happy to set up a short lesson to track it down. You can email me at peter@nycellolessons.com. Good luck and have fun on your journey with the cello, it will certainly reward you!

      Peter Lewy the buzzing was due to my continuing to turn the fine tuner too far not realizing that the peg was slipping. Thanks to your video, I became aware of the need to back off at both the peg & fine tuner, tune just below target via the peg then tweedle to lock the peg and fine tune. I also learned that I won’t die of a broken string. 😅

      If you can't budge the peg, wrap it in a cloth and use a nut cracker or a pair of plyers to move it in the loosening direction only.

    I don't have a cello teacher where I am, and my dad and my step mom don't know how to play the cello. I hadn't been able to play my cello for about a year and a half but now I can again. Because it hadn't been tuned in so long, it's super out of tune and I tried to tune it with the pegs. I try to turn the pegs tighter but they go back loose again and they're not sticking. How do I stop them from doing that?

    • @PLewy4
      @PLewy4  3 года назад +1

      If you watch the video it explains the best way to get them to stay by weedling them in. If that doesn't work you will need to bring the cello to a cello repair person called a Luthier. Good luck!

      No problem. Wrap a washcloth around the peg then use a pair of pliers or a nut cracker to gently force it down. Once it's budged you can work it loose and then bring it up using the method in the above video.

      @@PLewy4 Actually they're now making the big jump to Geared Tuners because of how much easier they turn, which eliminates the need to have fine tuners on that Tailpiece. Why not give the Geared Tuners a Shot on your Cello? They're far more superior than Friction Pegs becuse they're becoming Obselete.
