  • Here's my first look at the new Fujifilm GF 80mm f1.7, for the GFX medium format camera system. You can see my first impressions of this lovely lens and then come with me while I shoot 4 different looks in the studio to put the lens through its paces. There are lots of finished images towards the end of the video, which were all shot at f8, 1/125 sec and ISO 100 - the camera body is the Fujifilm GFX 50S. Kris Karl (kriskarl.com) shot most of the studio footage and the model is Evie Robertson.

    I’m thinking on exploring the medium format territory and your works really convinced me to go for it! I’m ordering the 100s and this 80mm babe today! Love the way you present your videos, neat and concise, just like your studio setup and your visual style. Simplicity isn’t easy. I can’t stand the jibber jabbers from most of the gear reviewers. Thank you for this beautiful video and it’s a shame that so little people give you a like I cannot understand at all. would love to see a little more detailed explanation of your lighting. I see some lights in your video but I don’t get it since there are obviously two facing backboards with some sheets on it one on the side feathering but anyways love your content.

    Honestly, your work is more inspiring to me than Annie Lebevioitz. Don't get me wrong, she's a trailblazer but you really got the color right. Her style is very heavy green/blue tints. I'm using a Canon 5D3 right now but considering an R5 or the GFX100s. I'm nervous about the slow AF of the GFX. But the color rendering in-camera for the GFX the way you use it is quite stunning. I really love your set building, the colors are so dynamic, and the scene is so interesting. A big reason I love it is due to the color combinations you use in your set building. People see your images and realize it looks amazing but it's so deceptively simple you miss it. I really have to study the way you layer your set.

    • @DavidShoukry
      @DavidShoukry  2 года назад +1

      I’ll take that! Thanks for your very kind feedback. Yes, everything I do is grounded in old-fashioned colour theory and composition. I know what you’re saying about the autofocus on the GFX cameras: it is certainly okay, and people say the new S cameras are much improved in that respect. But if quick autofocus is important then the GFX cameras are some way behind Sony and the new Canon R cameras.

    • @DavidShoukry
      @DavidShoukry  2 года назад +1

      For colour output, I think the Fuji cameras are the best straight from camera. I’ve shot with most cameras that are relatively current and, to me, Fuji gets really beautiful results with the least work afterwards.

    Thanks for that new video. Funny, but although this is obviously a superior lens to the 63mm and closer to the 110mm in terms of build quality and aperture, I somehow find it's look less appealing, less "classic" and - in lack of a better word - less "organic" than the both other lenses. Maybe a bit too unbalanced sharp, something I'd more expect from a Fuji X camera rather than a Gfx. I know that the 110mm is also sharp, but at the same time it has an almost painterly look, some "Hollywood" appeal.
    But hey, that young woman - the model - is really gorgeous...

    • @DavidShoukry
      @DavidShoukry  3 года назад +1

      Appreciate the comment, thank you. I do know what you mean about the overall look of the 80mm: to me it seems more modern whereas the other two are more ‘classic’. Don’t even know if that makes sense lol. It is certainly very sharp. The one I had had pretty slow autofocus, almost like it wasn’t quite ready for primetime. I’d imagine it will be ironed out with a firmware update or something.

  • @BlaxkNobility

    David you need to drop the 63mm and keep this 80mm as main your lens the pictures appears much more sharper and clean.

    One more question. If you were just starting out and you could only choose one lens regardless of the cost difference, out of the
    63 f2.8, 80 f1.7,
    and the 110 f2, which one would you own first.

    Wanted to ask you after after having tried the 80mm, how did the autofocus perform. From your experience, out of the 63mm, the 80mm and the 110mm which one has the best autofocus.
    Thanks for your time.

    • @DavidShoukry

      My impression was that the autofocus on the 80mm was not great. Pretty slow and missed quite frequently. The focus on the other 2 lenses performs better but can also be a little temperamental!

    Thanks for this wonderful video. I love your reviews! I am getting my 80mm next week and can't wait to compare it to my 110 and 63. It really does fill that well-needed focal length between 63 and 110. In a studio last week, the 110 was too long and the 63 was a bit too short and as I only have the 32-64 zoom, that was also insufficient. The 80 would have been perfect.
