    On October 3rd 1993, the Battle of Mogadishu, also known as the Black Hawk Down incident, occured in Somalia's capital city, Mogadishu. The conflict arose from a mission by U.S. forces to capture key advisors to Somali warlord Aidid. The operation quickly turned disastrous when two U.S. Black Hawk helicopters were downed by hostiles on the ground, leading to a desperate overnight battle to rescue the downed crews.
    The fighting was intense and chaotic, with U.S. forces facing heavy resistance from militia and civilian fighters. Despite efforts to secure the crash sites and extract the trapped soldiers, the operation resulted in 18 U.S. soldiers killed and dozens wounded, along with hundreds of Somali casualties.
    The battle had significant political ramifications, leading to a reevaluation of U.S. involvement in Somalia and a shift towards a more limited role in peacekeeping operations. The events of Mogadishu also highlighted the challenges and risks of military intervention in complex conflicts, influencing future U.S. foreign policy decisions.

    Here’s a cool fact from the rescue.
    At one of the crash sites, while under intense fire from all directions and still in the process of freeing the body of one of the pilots, a wounded and understandably panicked sergeant entered one of the APC’s sent to rescue them and demanded that they leave immediately. The Malaysian APC driver, knowing most of the Americans were still outside, simply responded in broken English with:
    “No, no. We stay”
    What a line.

    A bit more details about the rescue since a lot of people overlooked this:
    It was headed by the 10th Mountain Division, technically, but what they lacked it armor, having on Humvees. The only forces nearby who had armor the Pakistanis and Malaysians.
    The Malaysians had Condor APCs, four wheeled, German-made armored cars, while the Pakistani had old M48 and M60 tanks for fire support.
    There was a fight going on with the higher ups since 10th Mountain just wanted to commandeer the Malaysian APCs. However, the Malaysian Army 19th Batallion, Mechanized, had battlefield experience of their own and extremely competent soldiers at this point, objected. They eventually reached a compromise where the combat teams dismount and leave only the vehicle crews and the 10th Mountain.
    The Pakistanis soon pulled out of the battle due to the lack of night vision equipment, making it hazardous for them to fight. The Malaysians and the 10th Mountain pushed on.
    It should be mentioned that the Malaysians were the UN QRF for the area, so the Malaysian brass was royally pissed when the US didn't even tell them about an op going on, only finding out after the first Black Hawk was shot down.
    To see this other side of Operation Gothic Serpent, MALBATT Misi Bakara is a dramatized retelling of the events (it's on Netflix).

    A family friend was part of the convoys during this. He never talks about it much, but after seeing this he wanted me to say the following.
    "Thank you for telling the story how it was. It wasn't pretty or romanticized, but that's how it's gotta be told. I'm just glad we aren't forgotten. I lost some good friends during that mess, and seeing people I've never met who were never there give them the respect they earned in that god forsaken city makes me tear up. Thanks for making an old Ranger smile." -Sgt. "Yogi"

    • @alexwright9875
      @alexwright9875 2 дня назад

      Another huge error with this vid is that he says "US and NATO forces" which is incorrect, they were UN forces, and also the night vision 'footage' of the incident is not from Somalia 1993, camera quality is far too good and they all have M4s so unless all in that shot are delta (which is unlikely) the footage is not from this event

    That's the big difference between the USA and China and Russia, whoever. We don't leave our men or women purposely behind like cowards. We're willing to die for each other, not for terror or power. That's what makes us great. Honorable. Rip to the operators who lost their lives that day, and the civilians who needlessly starved.

    By taking back Mogadishu, you mean getting their asses handed to them by an underestimated force and having to run for their lives out the hot zone?

    What is crazy is you can't just fire a RPG into the air. The R stands for rocket, which means if anything solid is within around 100 ft of the back of the weapon the shooter would more than likely die. It is called back-blast.

    one thing thats really cool is that Gen. Garrison accepted full responsibility for the outcome of the raid. we dont have brass like that anymore.

    • @oldphart-zc3jz
      @oldphart-zc3jz 3 дня назад

      Only the Navy punishes command failure. More people than Garrison screwed up. Using light forces was mostly an act of vanity and hubris. AC-130s and heavy armor in the first place would ensure no Blackhawks went down in the first place. Helicopters cannot be made truly rugged and the world is littered with shot down rotary winged aircraft. The Army should scrap the Key West agreement and field fixed wing long loiter attack birds.
