Another great video. I've never grafted before but have been inspired. I'm going to be grafting my avocado trees this year and if I'm successful, I'm going to hold you fully responsible.
Great video. Looks like I am not the only one that thinks a good avocado scion should be taken from avocado branches that are starting to show the start of flower buds forming.
What part of SoCal are you in? You mentioned an upcoming scion exchange, which sounds AMAZING. When and Where?? I live in Los Angeles and i stumped a tree this year, tons of new shoots and i want to add about 5 less common varieties to it in Spring '24.
Hi , thanks for the great learnings , hey can I reuse a rootstock that my first graft failed on ? I chopped below the union to get rid of the failed cleft graft
Yes you can. Usually when a graft fails, there will be new rootstock growth below where the graft was done. I usually wait for that rootstock growth to get thick enough, and then graft onto that. And that works for me
@@AJTheGraftMan ok cool I never thought of doing that I was going to use the main stem again but I’ll use the sucker instead, thanks for the tips champ yewwww , 🇦🇺
Appreciate you always. I learnt avocado grafting from you and I can boldly say that I am an expert now because of my success rate. Please AJ can I take Scion from a grafted tree of about 14 months that is yet to fruit? Thanks.
Thank you for the kind words. I’m happy to know you are having success with grafting. Yes you can take scions from trees that have not yet produced fruit.
Nice video, AJ. I needed to see close-ups as you displayed here. Some of the avocado varieties flower at slightly different times, correct? So the buds pushing would be at slightly different times also, right? Generally, they are all going right now in SoCal right now in this nice weather? I also heard that one grafter likes his grafts close the seed to not have to deal as much with growth from the rootstock. I've been having problems grafting in the pots if I didn't put enough soil high enough into the pot. My hands slicing the rootstock (cleft grafting) would hit the rim of the pot if the soil isn't near to the top of the pot. I haven't cut myself yet, but I think I'm going to wear some type of glove on my non-cutting tool hand just for protection. I've come pretty close to slicing more than the rootstock if you know what I mean. How many months before a successful graft should push out new growth? Is a Zutano scion worth anything to graft onto a rootstock? Just to get pollen from that "B" type avocado and to get seeds to seeds to germinate later for grafting?
Thanks Neal. Yes different flowering times means different times of buds pushing. The most ideal grafting in containers is as close to the seed as possible. The glove is a good idea. Usually takes about 6 weeks for grafts to push growth. Zutano is a great rootstock.
thank you! Do they all mature at the same time? I'm wanting to graft off of my son's Nabal onto a seedling I've grown, not sure when to pull the scion off of his Nabal tho?
Thanks. Depends on the weather. We’ve had a relatively mild winter so far , so the scions on most varieties, including Nabal, are mature and ready to graft now
@@AJTheGraftMan ty! my seedling I want to graft onto is about 15" tall, and about a pencil width in diameter. Do you think it's big enough? ty for all the help! it's so appreciated!
So I planted from seed and avocado two years ago I just recently got five cyan wood Haas avocados in the mail and I’m trying to graft for the first time. Is there anyway to route the other four cyan Woods that I have so that I don’t just have to throw them away?
I would put the other scions in a ziplock plastic bag and seal it airtight. Then I would put the bag in the fruit and vegetable part of the refrigerator
Do you know where I can buy some avocado trees or cuttings in SoCal? I'm willing to drive anywhere in SoCal, I live in the High Desert and you cant find any up here. Thanks.

Beautiful bro, thank you 🍺

I have been grafting a lot of avocados I have noticed that flower buds do change to leaf buds when grafted
im in the bay but go down to socal often to visit my in laws, would love to try and get some scion wood next winter/spring
man I wish i was your neighbour, here in Tarragona (Spain) all I can get my hands on is hass bacon a fuerte
Yes but in Spain you have one of my favorite foods - tortilla de patatas. I tried to make it at home but it does not taste the same as in Spain!
I've been watching your grafting videos non stop i live here in California also where is a good place to get avocado scion's thanks in advance.
Thanks for watching. Best bet is to join the California rare fruit growers club. They have chapters all over California

Any suggestions for where to purchase good quality scions?
I feel like avocados and mangos are very similar. Do also cut the tip off of mango scion wood?
I don't cut the tips of mango scion wood. Mango grafts seem to take really well with the tips attached.

Should we a scion of fruiting avocado tree be used in grafting?
Hello AJ. Where is the location of the scion exchange. I live in vista and have some nice varieties to exchange. Thanks. mike
I am also interested as I live in University City.
