Me too, my Mam and Dad moved from Ireland and landed in Liverpool then went a little further is all. So I grew up in an estate and i can tell you now those people had pride. They washed the front door step ffs. Note they can’t even wash their arse! Pathetic and they should be ashamed. I’m sure most on that estate are fine upstanding people trying their best but it’s the people you highlight Billy that need help and more importantly a kick up the ass.

Maybe just showing my age when a 'rough' estate was rows of Victorian terrace slums that literally still had the scars from WW2 bombs - but they were bloody good adventure playgrounds! I had almost only hand-me-down clothes and toys and hardly a penny to rub together. There were times we went without a meal. Nowt stopping some of these residents keeping their homes and gardens clean and tidy. There used to be a term: house proud.
The world left this country far behind. While old people cry about it not being like Victorian times - since the year 2000 China has built entire mega cities housing tens of millions of people, high speed rail crossing their country, an advanced space exploration program, and they have factories the size of defunct towns like Oldham churning out billions of flat screen tv's for less than the price of a cup of coffee. We cry into our beer that it's not like it was but the world couldn't care less about Victorian life in long defunct mill towns. It's ancient history as relevant to the modern world as the Norman conquest. You can't run a town off nostalgia and crying.

My rant here is valid. I work out on the North Sea my shifts are 14 days. Fuckn hard graft. It's frustrating seeing neds running about on motorbikes . Surron electric bikes that cost thousands. They aren't working. The laziest of society they contribute not. I think the uk government should start thinking about bringing back national service. Am out her risking my life, contributing. They are having jollies pissing of people trying to have a quiet life.

Being a council kid growing up on one in the '''' ''70s-'80s we had youth clubs, gyms, and boys/girls, Scouts, they gave us plenty to do keeping us kids out of trouble, as camping classes, fishing, football, the whole youth on our Estate grow-up with stuff every day, if you leave kids to their own devices usually it can produce bad outcomes, saying that I wish them well.

Fantastic comment. Consecutive governments have done nothing for the youth of this country. All they have done is take away funding from councils that payed for youth clubs. Most countries in Western Europe have fantastic youth clubs. And funnily enough you don’t get anywhere near the amount of youth crime or antisocial behaviour from the youth in those countries.
Oldham council estates were at their worst in the early 80s. Shaw road estate, Barrowshaw, Abbeyhills etc. Boarded up flats and houses, squatters and thieves. All demolished now.
This is exactly it. It's the people that don't look after areas. If they had respect it wouldn't look nowhere near as bad. But I'm guessing it everyone else's fault. Thast normally the mentality of these places. "There is nowt for the kids to do" is a good excuse why the burn and break things etc.
Good work Mr Moore! The country is a mess and it doesn't have to be this way. Too many are living their lives with zero discipline/self respect, all they want to do is get drunk/high, eat junk food and expect the welfare state to pick up the tab. The really sad thing seeing estates like this is that there will be plenty who do the right things, they get off their backside and put in a shift at work and pay their taxes, they are house proud and raise their kids to be respectful, but sadly their wage is poor so they cannot afford to move away as all they'd be moving away to is another place just as bad. The whole illegal immigration mess and the billions wasted must be addressed, but what must end is 'some' of the native feral population who bring nothing to the table but trouble. I'd sooner see a welfare state which contributes to those who are working and doesn't reward those who put contribute nothing to society.

Oldham is just one rough estate, My family are Oldham born and bred, Chadderton, Abbey Hills before the rebuild, Greenacres and all employed over time by Park Cake... just like it's surrounding towns, new houses, same old problems.. They say you can't polish a turd but you can roll it in glitter. That sums up Oldham and it's neighbours....
I grew up on a council estate just like that for 40 years, now I live in a farmhouse in the countryside and I can categorically say it is way more fun living on an estate

@kjp1232 Yep. My Dad grew up on an estate like this back in the 60s. He said everyone had nice gardens and homes, plenty of pubs, decent shops and local factories that gave people secure jobs. All of that is gone. Very sad.

Look at that beautiful scenery opposite the Charcoal Grill. Walk up to those hills if you live here to clear your head, would be amazing for mental health and fitness!
Plus look in the history of your area, go to the well known places (don't dig there lol) and then go looking for new forgotten places, you can find Roman coins, Neolithic artefacts, Viking age stuff; there's people who will help you identify anything you find.

It's been going on for a lot longer. Many local council's have been under funded for decades what ever the political party especially for council estates, they have other priorities, especially when It's the people themselves, making it like this.

I live in Oldham in a modest 3 bed detached. I pay £2,400 council tax. It's an absolute rip off. I think we all know where most of it goes. The town is a shithole. Mosques are thriving though.
Yep, probably just one day every fortnight would be enough if there is 2/3 people with a caged van. The problem is that it's the responsibility of whoever owns or rents the space. Most council or housing associations grounds maintenance contracts will be given to companies like AMIE or One Manchester depending on the area and if it isn't on their maps then it won't get done. There is funding available for any community groups who want to volunteer to look after a space but it just takes cooperation with the owners and the councillors of that ward and someone who can put an application together. We have done this in Manchester for community gardening projects etc. It's just that most people lack community spirit and are not proactive/just waiting for someone else to take care of things.

Billy I grew up in a place in Scotland that had one local community that was known as a bad Area. Then the council introduced a community group of all the locals from that council estate to take part in deciding how to deal with all those Anti Social behaviours in that area. NOW that Area is a safe and clean area to pass through. Moral of the Story. Take a pride in your Community and look after it and don't expect others too do it for you.

I went to rehab with a good lad from Oldham. We went out one day coz i had a dentist appointment, but we ended up scoring. We went back to the rehab next morning in a mess. They kicked me out, and my mate got transferred to a rehab in South Shields. I only lived a few miles from where the rehab was. I wish i could remember his name. He was a really good person. He stook up for the weaker people in rehab Good man from Oldham
I grew up in the next town, Ashton-under-lyne. In the 70s and 80s it was ok, quiet and safe, traditional, the most exciting thing was the Wimpy Bar, Shades nightclub in Stalybridge and the one room pub at Hartshead Pike. It was a nice market town. When I go back now it fills me with sadness, it's all gone. Its grim.

It is amazing how people who come from so-called rough estates better themselves, but remember where they come from and the community spirit they had, I have family on that estate who are all hard-working and trying to make their lives better

You need to try the dicky bird Estates in Bury which is about 14 miles west of Oldham. It's a good town but that estate and one that is known locally as the Lego land Estate rough as toast! Great videos Billy keep them coming!

Labour fails them. But they continue to vote Labour. I grew up in a Labour area. I moved out to find work. I've seen a few of the 'zombie' films on youtube and it's bloody horrifying, what were once nice places turned into no go areas. It needs some very tough love to fix it and a move away from personal freedom to doing what's right for the majority who are hard working and make a positive contribution to society.
Immigrants have got nothing to do with an individual being a scruffy git. You either take pride in your community, or you don't. Be the change you want to see, don't follow the status quo.
I remember a time when there was pride taken in living in these estates, the houses and gardens were lovely and the people friendly, then they started bringing in all the worst kind, the places were not maintained by the council and deteriorated and became slums. I am glad that there is least a sense of community. If you don't have that it is bleak! My mum and I during the school holidays would jump on buses, anywhere, we arrived at a place called Bleak House, it was a council estate! some wag on the council idea of a joke. There were a few named after Dickens' characters. Thank you!

@kjp1232 Yep. My Dad grew up on an estate like this back in the 60s. He said everyone had nice gardens and homes, plenty of pubs, decent shops and local factories that gave people secure jobs. All of that is gone. Very sad.

Look at that beautiful scenery opposite the Charcoal Grill. Walk up to those hills if you live here to clear your head, would be amazing for mental health and fitness!
Plus look in the history of your area, go to the well known places (don't dig there lol) and then go looking for new forgotten places, you can find Roman coins, Neolithic artefacts, Viking age stuff; there's people who will help you identify anything you find.
Don t know if you ll read this or not Billy. Just to say I love your videos. I read your book a few years ago and I was a little disappointed I passed it on to somebody so I obviously recommended it. It's been going on for a lot longer. Many local council's have been under funded for decades what ever the political party especially for council estates, they have other priorities, especially when It's the people themselves, making it like this.

I live in Oldham in a modest 3 bed detached. I pay £2,400 council tax. It's an absolute rip off. I think we all know where most of it goes. The town is a shithole. Mosques are thriving though.

Yep, probably just one day every fortnight would be enough if there is 2/3 people with a caged van. The problem is that it's the responsibility of whoever owns or rents the space. Most council or housing associations grounds maintenance contracts will be given to companies like AMIE or One Manchester depending on the area and if it isn't on their maps then it won't get done.
There is funding available for any community groups who want to volunteer to look after a space but it just takes cooperation with the owners and the councillors of that ward and someone who can put an application together. We have done this in Manchester for community gardening projects etc. It's just that most people lack community spirit and are not proactive/just waiting for someone else to take care of things.

Billy I grew up in a place in Scotland that had one local community that was known as a bad Area. Then the council introduced a community group of all the locals from that council estate to take part in deciding how to deal with all those Anti Social behaviours in that area. NOW that Area is a safe and clean area to pass through.
Moral of the Story.
Take a pride in your Community and look after it and don't expect others too do it for you.

I went to rehab with a good lad from Oldham. We went out one day coz i had a dentist appointment, but we ended up scoring. We went back to the rehab next morning in a mess. They kicked me out, and my mate got transferred to a rehab in South Shields. I only lived a few miles from where the rehab was.
I wish i could remember his name. He was a really good person. He stook up for the weaker people in rehab

I grew up in the next town, Ashton-under-lyne. In the 70s and 80s it was ok, quiet and safe, traditional, the most exciting thing was the Wimpy Bar, Shades nightclub in Stalybridge and the one room pub at Hartshead Pike. It was a nice market town. When I go back now it fills me with sadness, it's all gone. Its grim.
Was a good place growing up did all the pubs in the 80s 90s not its a dump sorry to say good days have gone

You need to try the dicky bird Estates in Bury which is about 14 miles west of Oldham. It's a good town but that estate and one that is known locally as the Lego land Estate rough as toast! Great videos Billy keep them coming!

I've seen a few of the 'zombie' films on youtube and it's bloody horrifying, what were once nice places turned into no go areas. I remember a time when there was pride taken in living in these estates, the houses and gardens were lovely and the people friendly, then they started bringing in all the worst kind, the places were not maintained by the council and deteriorated and became slums. I am glad that there is least a sense of community. If you don't have that it is bleak! My mum and I during the school holidays would jump on buses, anywhere, we arrived at a place called Bleak House, it was a council estate! some wag on the council idea of a joke. There were a few named after Dickens' characters. Thank you!
