  • Zory Shahrokhi is a British-Iranian visual artist based in Greater London.
During her residency at Edinburgh Printmakers, Zory developed a number of etching works, working closely with Florence Eckersley. These works combine hard ground etching and aquatint techniques with traditional Persian copper work which creates incisions on the plate by directly tapping a metal pen with a hammer.
She made these etching works based on a series of drawings and installations she started in 2003 related to the Western invasions and destructions in the Middle East. These drawings create a narrative that is open to the viewers interpretation and allows them to devise their own story.
The central motif in these works are everyday birds, crows and ravens, which we see flying away as they leave a faint silhouette of themselves traced on someone's scarf, returning to pick through the rubble, or collapsing exhausted in great numbers as if to form a pile of autumn foliage.
