I live in Grimsby Ontario and saw Vera (the Hamilton Lancaster) fly over this morning. You can hear it before you can see it. Stirs the heart every time.

In the early 1960s met a French lady that lived through WW2 She told me about the sound of an English bomber high in the night sky ,and how the Nazis would run and hide in fear from falling bombs. The sound of freedom is sometimes a Rolls Royce Merlin engine growling defiance to cruel, ruthless people from the dark night sky. The engines are still growling today!!

Here is the famed "nightingales and bombers" recording from May 1942. Enjoy the actual sound of massed Merlins as heard from the civilians watching them fly towards the Channel: ruclips.net/video/H_MHqW5KVds/видео.html

Saw Thumper and Vera along with several Spitfires and a Hurricane doing a low pass over Goodwood one Saturday afternoon, 12 Merlins in close formation my god what a glorious sound and vision that was.

One can only imagine when watching documentaries of Lancasters working their way round the perimeter track prior to take off, just what the noise level must have been with Merlin after Merlin firing up to their crackling best.

Those machines are just magnificent, but almost pale into insignifance next to the men who flew them into combat.

There's not much that can beat the sound of a Rolls-Royce Merlin

I belong to the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum and was present for the first flight of VRA (C-GVRA, RCAF FM113) on Sept 11 1988. She flies in honour of Pilot Officer Andrew Mynarski, RCAF, who was awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions on his final flight.

The Merlin is so smooth, so subtle compared to the radials on the American heavies of the era.

Is there a tonal difference between the sound of the original Rolls Royce engine and the Packard version? - or is it the same? Could an experienced mechanic tell the difference as they flew in without going out to look?

I know these things killed so many innocent civilians, men women and children but they are just machines and the war is over and as such, they remain things of magnificent beauty.
