    Yep, they should have swapped the fortune and glory, when we play we always struggle with it too. But for the rest fantastic game (we don't mind if we forget a rule, the tension remains until the last moment anyway). Message to FFP: release those new expansions please :-)

    I've always been a fan of this game, and I'm glad I picked it up years back. I really wish they would hurry up and release the two new expansions that they announced 2-3 years ago at this point, instead of focusing on Shadows of Brimstone.

    Talk about timing. Just played this with 4 friends and had a blast. Not sure we ever completely understood the temple rules, but no matter. Still had fun. But I'm not sure I'll play again with 5. With rules queries and table talk, took too long. Thx for another great video.

    I like to compare this game's Glory to Eldritch Horror's Influence. You acquire gear and allies through your connections, not just through money. So getting more Glory through the various adventures and surviving crazy things lets you use your influence and fame to get better, and then getting Fortune as your one true goal (and ultimately the Villain's goal) makes sense to me.

    • @TheDungeonDive
      @TheDungeonDive  Год назад

      @@TheDungeonDivein this era most expeditions were funded by organizations or governments. So your ability to get those governments and organizations to fund your expedition is via glory.
      Of course the rules allow you to pay fortune if you want to “pay cash” so to speak. But as in real life you rarely pay cash and use credit.

    Excellent review on a game I would like to get to the table more frequently. Yes, the rules are fiddly and I never have and never will play competitively.
    That said, the respective roles of Fortune as victory points and Glory as the currency makes sense to me. Glory represents your growing reputation as an adventurer and the willingness of potential allies to join or contribute. Fortune is not, strictly speaking, money; rather, it captures that cinematic adventure line: "This belongs in a museum!" *THAT'S* the reason to play this game.

    One of the stories my friends and I talk about with this game occured when I went to get the Shadow of Illusion from the Sahara desert. Before the errata, the ...of Illusion had you roll afterwards to see how much glory you actually got. So, I drew a deep sea diving adventure... in the Sahara. Where I failed and had to fight a squid on my next turn. I beat the squid, got lost in some underground ice caves... in the Sahara. And finally a high speed car chase. Then, after getting the treasure, I failed all the glory rolls, and then the nazis immediately knocked me out and stole the treasure. So, the joke was that he would be in a bar, talking about how he busted his ass to get this treasure, only to have it slip through his fingers, but since he got zero glory from the adventure, not a single person believed him. Which makes sense because all of it sounds outlandish.

    Great update. Several of the things you said totally resonated with me about Fortune & Glory which is, as you say, a really great game.
    Specifically I to have found some of the bigger games like Shadow of Brimstone, fantastic though they are can involve a huge investment in time (and cash) to get to the table. With those games you always want more content and as a result the setup/teardown and general maintenance of the game goes up. I sold my SoB collection primarily for this reason. I loved the game but tabling it was a big event.
    Fortune & Glory is relatively straightforward to get to the table but still provides a ton of fun. You play, enjoy then put it away and can do all that in a couple of hours.
    FANG reminds me a lot of Eldritch Horror and I tend to think of it as EH's poorer cousin. It's no less enjoyable it just however doesn't quite feel as classy as EH.
    FANG feels so much like a globe-trotting Indiana Jones movie. The narrative it generates is fantastic.
    Also, the gold being the Glory and the blue counters being the Fortune catches me out too. Yes, as you say, it's a small thing but it does grate just a little.
    I've been hanging on the expansions FFP said were delayed primarily because of COVID 👀 Come on FFP, now's the time to give FANG some ❤

    Problem with SOB is after I play one scenario, and I start a another one I get bored and pack it up. Also, while playing F&G, my character was in South Africa and somehow the character ended up in an Ice cave 😄😄

  • @julianbailey2749
    @julianbailey2749 Год назад

    My main issue with F&G is that the competitive game can get a run away leader issue based on how lucky (or not) people are in the first few turns then you have a long game with very few pull back mechanics as the people behind the leader have to risk more and more to catch up. Solo it may be somewhat better.

    Interesting. I understand why A Touch of Evil did not make it for me, although I love the art and style of game. I love luck and randomness but I could not connect the dots between the events, items, etc. (all cards in fact) and the gameplay. It did not make any sense to me. It would maybe need a little more of narrative cohesion for my liking. And I see that Fortune and Glory seems to rely on the same system.
