There really is just some kind of… power to 8 bit graphics and dead silence. I don’t know if you played Cave Story, but there’s a section where you have to get a dog from an abandoned house. The house is no more than one screen in size and everything, you the dog, the level geometry, is a pitch black silhouette on a bluish gray background. There’s no music, just the sound of your character jumping and maybe shooting, but I seem to conjure the memory as pure silence when I think about it. I don’t even know if there are enemies or stage hazards in there. You go in, jump through the darkness, find the dog, and leave. That room unnerves me in a way no other game has.
The sandtrap gators are in there, so if you have low health or play Hard Mode you die instantly if you touch the bottom of the room, always scares the shit out of me. idk why that room is like that other than gator jumpscare
Faith 1 is a very old and barebones prototype of the original idea. The games REALLY do get better, the third chapter is baiscally a full fledged game. Chapter 1 was released in 2017, chapter 2 in 2019, and chapter 3, as well as "the unholy trinity" collection, in 2022. Also, every game has secrets. You have to work to get the "true" endings of those games, especially in chapter 3, where you cannot ever get anything but a bad ending and miss out on the final boss without a lot of exploring in every subchapter. Also everything is missable, so if you miss you would have to replay the whole game again, so I suggest using some "spoiler-free" tips if you plan to play that game.

There's a little black spot on the sun today... The reason the game can be as scary as it it is because of the lo-fi. Now, sure, the game has to be unsettling and scary enough to kick-start it, but because the graphics are so lo-fi, your brain has to fill in all sorts of blanks. Your imagination starts doing much of the work for the game, and it's very easy for people to terrify themselves.

I will say that my opinion of the faith series did kinda drop after learning the creator is like, chrstian on the level of being a missionary. I wouldn't neccesarily say that this fact inherently makes the game worse, but it did make me start inspecting it as a theoretical work of earnest media and not just an homage to a specific era of biblical horror movies. Notably the chapter 3 plot point where you spend an extended horror section in an abortion clinic that was being secretley used for satanic rituals by a cult is like, something that kindaaa slides by when you give it the benefit of the doubt of being an over the top critique of those types of movies, but when the potential for it to be earnestly trying to communicate those ideas is established it just feels harder to enjoy. All that said, the actual presentation of these games is really well done, and theres no real proof one way or another that it was done maliciously, but because of the lack of clarity my feelings on the games cooled substantially.

I only have one real problem with this game series, cause yeah there are sequels, and it’s the message behind them. The message being that the priest exorcising the little girl is in the right and everyone trying to stop him, higher ups in the church concerned citizens calling it abuse public opinion of exorcism etc, is inadvertently doing the devils work and preventing necessary actions. And this doesn’t just apply to the the game the creator has been on other YT videos saying he believes this about real life exorcisms which ya know have killed and tortured untold numbers of children and adults over the last 2 thousand years…. And nah sorry keep that guy away from any children with behavioral disorders. Believe what you want but if you’re dragging others into it and cussing them harm that’s over the line.
