    When the first movie came out, my father (who really liked knives) was impressed by the Rambo knife but, he did not like the hollow handle. He felt that the hollow handle would weaken the knife and you could carry all the survival knick-knacks in the sheath. As it happened my mother was a friend of a lady whose husband was a knife maker. So she got a Rambo knife similar to the movie knife but, without the hollow handle. My parents were living in Atkins, AR at the time (I was in the Navy) and the local knife maker was Jimmy Lile who lived the next town over in Russellville. I got that knife after my father passed away and I still have it. I don’t know how valuable it would be since my mother never kept the receipt and it did not come with a fancy case (I don’t think it even had a box), so there is no way to prove the story. It doesn’t really matter that much since I do not plan on selling the knife anyway.

      Brother ANY Jimmy Lile original knife would be over 2k if it's in good shape. Jimmy still made Rambo knives I was looking to buy in the late 90s they were 800 bucks then but they have skyrocketed as John said 10 to 12k lol wish I had bought one in my teens haha. Your knife can be authticated by many American Bladesmith Society members including the remaining Lile company. His style was unique and your mother or fathers name may be in a file if Jimmy Lile made your knife before he passed. Good luck to you and keep your blade well oiled and sharp. FYI don't ever store a Lile in its leather sheath as the blade can rust even good stainless can rust when stored in leather. Just wrap it in a rag after wiping it down.

      I have 1 that was made in Taiwan. Got it and a Crocodile Dundee knife back in 89 for Christmas. Cheap ass things were made of the softest stainless steel that I've ever seen. Neither of them would take or hold an edge. Pretty sure they came from QVC, I never asked though. Still have them for sentimental reasons but they are useless.

      Lile's bowies were cool long before Rambo. The Smithsonian featured his work as did several Presidents. That's why Stallone asked him in the first place. Great video John, thanks for shining some light on this wonderful piece of movie history. I fell in love with the "Rambo" style survival knives as a kid back in the 1980's. I had 2 or 3 of the flea market/trade day versions with the huge bubble endcap and crapass items inside. Lol. The first knife introduced in the first film of the Rambo Saga, was made by knife maker Gil Hibbins. It is still one of my favorite knife designs of all time. He also made the knife used in Rambo 3 if I'm not mistaken. This one was quite a bit different than the first two movies because it was more of a Bowie style that had sleek flowing lines, rather than the very aggressive look of past two knives. Anyway, the first 3 knives of the series will always hold a special place within me, and my top two would be made by Gil Hibbins. Thanks again John and take care. Cheers

    Vaughn makes some nice knives.... The compass in that Mission knife is a NATO compass, which is slightly different to that of the types used by Jimmy's workers back in the day.... The ones used were out of Vietnam era survival kits. I have a Vietnam era survival kit in both my First Blood and Mission knives. My dear friend Gil Hibben, who is based in LaGrange Kentucky, made the Rambo III, Rambo 4, and some of the Last Blood knives...he's in his mid 80's and is still working hard everyday making knives.... :)

      Yeah, but $2k for a knife with 440-C stainless steel? That's just ridiculous. For that price point, I'd much rather have a Damascus blade, Elmax, or M390. Microtech uses the latter two, and even their knives aren't this ridiculously priced unless you're getting one of their limited collaboration knives.

    • @gameragodzilla
      @gameragodzilla 2 года назад +2

      @@The_Ghost923 You’re paying extra for the movie branding. This is definitely primarily for fans and collectors of the movie rather than someone’s main practical knife.
      It’s the same reason I paid $3000 for a Franchi SPAS-12 rather than half that price for a Benelli M4 that’s still in production so it’ll be newer and have a more advanced gas operating system. Because the Benelli M4 wasn’t used in Jurassic Park.
      Though you can pay $500 extra for the Cerakote presentation version in CPM 154CM. If I ever get this knife, that’ll be what I get.

    Greg walls makes the part 1 and part 2 survival knifes the blades can be from 440c stainless steel or D2 tool steel the same steel used to make the first two survival knifes in the rambo series. Jimmy lile only made 12 knifes for Rambo first blood. I plan on getting a rambo first blood survival knife with a blade made from D2 that's as close as you can get to owning a original rambo knife.
