Looking at the notes is important, but keeping tempo and understanding/memorizing the patterns coming is just as important when playing. Especially if you want to hit perfects. That helps a lot on faster speeds

Sometimes, too much info is a bad thing. For the faster songs, I have to play at least 1.75x. Too many notes on the screen at once actually make it harder.
