It is true what u said, but it is not just China, most people who live in their own country don't often travel within their state. However, if u are a foreigner, u are more likely to travel and learn their history then most people in that country:)

It's only natural you would know more about China than the average Chinese citizen. Not only have you likely traveled around China more than the average Chinese citizen, you also know a whole lot more about living as a foreigner in China. Most Chinese citizens wouldn't have the first understanding of what's necessary to survive in China as a foreigner (i.e., laws, visas, etc). So, it is entirely true that you would know more about China .

Dont see the point in pointing it out like they are some sort of exotic animal in the background you cant miss or to be deemed an "evil uncle" for simply looking at something ANYONE would.

Evil = not a nice look, Uncle - male elder. Its an inside joke of the channel and it is funny so stop being a social justice warrior when you do not even understand what you are talking about. Exposing Liars what you’re saying is very untrue in Chinese culture. In China, ppl stare foreigners or anyone mostly because some find them very attractive. If you’re ugly and you go to China, I bet no one will look at you for over one sec. The fact you don’t understand other cultures and purposely make it in a very negative way is certainly disrespectful and ignorant no matter in what culture.

Sadly I understand this all too well. Whether it was the year I studied in Mexico City (plus countless summers traveling around the country), the time in Colombia (my mom's homeland) or here in the US, most people don't really explore or have that much curiousity about anything outside their comfort zone (Europeans seem to be a major exception to this). In many ways they remind me of JRR Tolkein's Hobbits (inspired by the English farmers) - don't travel, don't care to, no real interest in anyplace but their village/small part of the world.

My feeling exactly, I say that I know China better than most Chinese not out of arrogance but because I had the privilege (and the strong desire) to explore the country extensively. For the curious mind, China is one giant, real-life Fellini movie : you get out in the morning with the certainty that within 10 minutes you will run into a character and witness some intriguing scene. But the characters's act usually stops at that one scene, whereas you have the chance to keep wandering and witness the next one.

I think that from an American stand point, many Americans haven't or will not ever see the country coast to coast and state to state in their entire lives because people have routines and they stick to it. I feel like in China that they have the same thing but a lot harder. If you do a trip and say "Wow I haven't ever been to this place" and you're a natural born citizen it's a bit embarrassing. Maybe from a tourist standpoint you have your eyes wide open instead of going to your job, get groceries, and eat and then sleep. It's just my opinion but China is unique and it's quite honestly overwhelming

Hi Winston, I have been your subscriber for 3-4 years already. This is first time I left a comment here. At the beginning I was triggered by your clickbait title(not the first time though, lol). But after I calm down, I realized you are probably right, because there are so many of us, you are definitely more knowledgable than the average Wang in China. However, only because there are so many of us, you can't just define Chinese, or Chinese culture as a whole like "能骗就骗" or lack of spirit of creativity, etc. There are so many people who are adventurous or creative you haven't met in your daily life. Even a small portion, say like 5%, that adds up to 70 million of us, which is near the whole population of Germany. Next time, if you are willing to, try not to define all the Chinese or Chinese culture as a whole, (Would you like to tell this to your buddy C-Milk as well? thank you). Still, appreciate your hard work on showing the real China to the youtube, either it's the good, or the bad, or the ugly. Cheers. --- From one not so average oversea Chinese

You only have a superficial view, combined with vanity it makes a little knowledge very dangerous. First "能骗就骗" is a criticism of the subculture of scammer. It's kind of like "nice guys finish last!". It is a criticism of their morality. Average Chinese people do not believe in ""能骗就骗". In fact see these scammers as amoral and use these phrases to point out and criticise their culture.
It's like "haha nice guys finish last!". I don't believe people in the Anglosphere actually believe in "haha nice guys finish last!". The phrase ""haha nice guys finish last!" is more of a criticise of the injustice, how some times being nice or being generous can land you in a position of disadvantage. It doesn't mean "nice guys finish last!" is a normal value in the society.
To represent Anglo society as a ruthless amoral society where extreme selfishness and sociopaths get ahead in life is a distortion of the society. It could be out of misunderstanding. To use the phrase "nice guys finish last" as evidence Anglo society approves the attitude "nice guys finish last". Indicates you don't really understand Anglo society.
You think because you know the surface of rural society that somehow you know China.
Yet you represent Chinese society as a place where the attitude "能骗就骗" is approved is a misunderstanding and a distortion of Chinese society. Then you say Chinese people hive mind and "lack of spirit of creativity". It indicates you don't understand the core of Chinese society.
First starting points on the general background on Chinese society. The four Chinese classics Romance of the Three Kingdoms(三國演義), Journey to the West (西遊記), Water Margin(水滸傳), Dream of the Red Chamber(紅樓夢). Will help you the struggles and the roots of Chinese society. It's a good starting point in understand the concept of "face". It will help you understand the struggles and intricacies of people considered a clean officials(清官) who serves the people and corrupt officials. It helps you understand who is considered a hero and who is considered a villain.
Second starting points on the human psyche, are "Irrationality: The Enemy Within" by Stuart Sutherland and Yale's free "Introduction to Psychology" by Paul Bloom.
Third you won't know modern China unless you know the republican revolution against the Qing and the communist revolution. You need to know what those revolutions are about. How badly the landlords treated the serfs, how corrupt the government was, how foreigners invaded and pillaged. How the core of the revolution was about freeing the people from serfdom and creating an utopia for all like "Homage to Catalonia". You won't know modern China unless you know the background of 江泽民's faction and 邓小平's faction. How 邓小平 betrayed the revolution. The revolution was about fighting for the people, it was about the people taking power. 邓小平 was right to open up the market, to a free market. You could have socialism under a free market. Since socialism is about worker's ownership, you can buy up the parts of the factory or a farm and still distribute ownership to the worker. The worker can own it like a mortgage. However, those in 邓小平's faction weren't about fighting for the people or working for the people. They are only doing it for money and power. Those are the motivations the dominate faction that's in charge today. How those people took over power is a long story. However there are many who are in the government to serve the people and not for money and power. They are in constant rivalry to slowly infiltrate eventually open up the government to democratic elections and a free media.
A better source on China's society and affairs come from Eric Fish and Gady Epstein of the Paulson institute.
You don't even understand 1 human being, humans are chaotic systems and it's wrong to judge or generalise them. Since chaotic systems are impossible to predict. Humans are humans, they are more complex and can't be judged or understood by a generalisation. Human biology and brains have far more complexity than anything that can be represented by a single judgement. We can't even simulate protein folding. How can you simulate trillions of proteins, cells and their interactions? Neuroscientists still can't understand much about human brain even though they scan people's voxels in fMRI and trying to understand them using a GLM. Human brains are still closer to blackboxes. Human society is still closer to an unpredictable 2nd order chaotic system. Thus unpredictable and can't be judged by generalisations. Thus it's better to reserve judgement.
You shouldn't think you know Chinese society or human beings just because you seen the surface of villages. Then go and make a vain video about how you "knows more about China than most Chinese". While judging Chinese people as "lack of spirit of creativity", "stuck in bubble", supposedly "don't ask questions". Then respond to any criticism with ad hominem attacks like "evil uncle", "glass hearts", "hive mind" etc. You can't read people's minds, you can't scan their brains or connectomes. Ad hominem attacks and character attacks are basically unfalsifiable and untestable.
You keep on dropping negative unfalsifiable and untestable generalisations about Chinese society. Mostly from your prejudice.
So, no I don't think you understand Chinese society or people at all. I don't think you understand human beings at all.
Tl:dr. Psychology books, the 4 classics, "Homage to Catalonia", "Red Star Over China", and biology will help you contextualise China better than going around in the village with a camera.

@@Kneecap22 You have raised some very points. However, Winston's assertion is comparative and he narrows his criterion in the video. Of course, he still has not given a rigorous criterion on how the comparison is to be made, with the criterion being falsifiable and testable. The scientific standard is too high and stringent for a video blog that intend to provoke thoughts and discussion.

Merton Meng I too find that Winston tends to generalize when making a statement. I agree it’d be much more accurate, objective and convincing, if there is more specificities. Especially when it come to subjects with depth and nuisances. But then again each video would probably be twice as long. Lol

From my experience with friends, family, and colleagues it's not much different in America regarding exploration. Most people only average 10 days of vacation time a year. There really isn't much time for exploration during the two day weekend when cities can be 100+ miles apart. Everyone seems to be in the same situation with working to take care of their family and property. We all tend to be tied to our location. As far as geographical knowledge, most people can give decent directions and know about surrounding town/cities. Most people do tend to regularly visit the other town/cities within 100 mile radius around them for: recreation, entertainment, dining, and shopping.
This is from my perspective and geographical location in the USA.

Someone Else that sounds a little weird since thats max 480 years ago, since most cant get kids after they are 40. And traderouts are alot older than 480-600 years. 1 female kid born up to max 40 years before getting a new female kid who becomes max 40 before getting a new kid thats 3 generation so to say 12 generation aint far enough back in time. And if its males who all lived to they are 100 and got a kid every time they turn 100 it would be 1200 years. So still it sound not right since we know ppl didnt live half that time usaly back in the days.

I have to agree, most people anywhere don't spend much time travelling outside their neck of the words. I suspect it is even more so in China. Though there is that huge migrant population, and large tourism groups - it seems quite controlled and limited. Of course there must be plenty of exception - the curious, the affluent. You've definitely seen WAY more than most.

  • @juststeve5542

I don't think it's purely cultural, there's probably a fair dose of "Familiarity breeding contempt", I've learnt more curious little bits of London from my foreign friends, who live here in the UK, than from all my years of living only 30 minutes outside it.
To me so many things were "well that's just how it is", and it's only when an outsider questions something that I realise what a strange place/object or habit is, and then I have to find out why it's so.
On the flip side, when I go abroad, I can get lost for days (quite literally sometimes) just wandering about, and then find myself noticing all the things that just don't register with the locals.
In short, step out of your comfort zone, the world is an awesome place.
(Love the "Foreigner...!" techno at the end. I wonder if that'll make it to Ibiza this year?).

Only the bubble she lived in with her day to day life. Also the times she has travelled she said she didn’t really pay attention to the journey just looked at the thing they came for and that’s it. I have seen what you mean about not liking to go to far out of their comfort zone. Most Chinese people I have met only like to go on guided tours and stay on the beaten path. My wife has told me she enjoys traveling with me because I always point out things she didn’t notice or explore more of the places we travel to by walking the back streets or visiting the local spots outside the general tourist path.

As an Australian man with a Chinese wife, I have visited China each year over the past 7 years, and I concur completely with your assessment of "knowing more about China than most Chinese". Discussions with other Australian men in a similar situation to me, and talking with my wife's family and friends, as well as watching most of your videos, we have a deeper understanding of Chinese culture than most "average" Chinese person. Knowing what a "Shanghai woman" means, insulting my Chinese family by offering to buy them decent meat for the BBQ instead of the fatty rubbish they traditionally consume to seeing my wife go ballistic at a trader who she believed "ripped me off" buying a small electronic item.... It is not criticism, or looking down on Chinese people, but simply remarking on the Chinese way of doing things. We may be in Shenzhen in September/October. Will contact you on Facebook closer to the time, and might be able to catch up, if you are free.

I've lived in 3 different states in the USA for substantial time each.
This video reminds me of the Texans that, when asked if they've ever been out of the state, respond:
"Texas is the best state, why would I want to go anywhere else?"
Fortunately, most native Texans are not so myopic!
Also, and this is more understandable, I met tons of Alaskans that had never left the state. In their defense, leaving Alaska is a lot harder and more expensive than leaving Texas!
Alaska is a great place to live, if you've got the time and money to explore.

You pierced the Chinese veil of superficial proud - to present the actual good stuff people can and should be proud of. Thank you.
