-----------------------------
Gang tattoos are type of tattoos associated with members to show support, loyalty and gang membership and record the wearer's personal history-such as their skills, specialties, accomplishments, incarceration, world view and also the means of personal expression.
Tattoos are strongly empirically associated with deviance, sometimes personality disorders, and criminality.
Certain tattoo designs have developed recognized coded meanings. The code systems can be quite complex, and because of the nature of what they encode, the designs of gang tattoos are not widely recognized as such to outsiders.
Here is a slide show of some of the New Zealand gang members, whose tattoos became a hit on social media.

Don't do drugs kids
What a joke.... Tragic guys with truly little future... They should stay locked up for life.
You should be locked up for life just for being so judgemental, you sound like a hater especially to your own self.
Why not say that to their face lol bet you won't cause you might sh*t yourself haha
Crazy, I know a lot of those family names, even went to school with the older brother of one of them. I hate the gangs. They're a bunch of leaches that destroy communities either through addiction, theft or violence. When the gangs were formed it was a different time for marginalised communities, we have access to more now. It just makes me sad that people that had potential to do so much good are just nasty pieces of work. The worst part is that the families push it, one of the nicest guys in my class is now a chapter leader WTF. My sons friend in primary school was top of the class, a really awesome kid he's 16, he dropped out of college to run with his fathers gang. It's a weird feeling to be hateful and sad for a group of people at the same time.
I saw a Damian Wereta and was just wondering if he is related to a Max or Ray Wereta who lived in Wainui-O-Mata in the 50's and 60's
Faces only a tattoo artist can love!
I don’t think even a mother can love those faces. They probably think they look mean, but mostly they look sad.

They know all that.
They fully cast themselves out of society.
One of the gang members in this video was asked in an interview, what he would say to a 16 yr old kid wanting to join the gang, he replied " I'd ask him to give me his face".
Power blackout
Yack/ look at um
Tattoo your patch on your back or your face , all good that's your buzz , I have tattoos also alot older than some of these younger brethren, but in my opinion the full face moko should be fully adhered and complied to the individual's , Tupuna , Whanaungataha and proper protocol etc. The intentions of displaying such a sacred marking worn by our warriors of old is a privilege. To some I believe and " only some " they apply such a privileged traditional moko is to intimidate the the weak and powerless, in this case a mask to cover weakness and non confidence in themselves.
Imagine having ford tattooed on your face only to realise there is Holden's 🧐
A disgrace to our ancient warriors Tamoko, those tattoos they wear are intimidating just to make em look tough. Disrespectful to us Maori. But thats their choice God Speed.
I like the new intro Mr Grid Sparta 👌🏻👌🏻
All these tattoos are to insite fear. Living in New Zealand most are based of tribal Maori tattoos as well. Maori face tattoos means you were a worrior from a specific tribe. Now it's which gang you are with.

Um wrong, it means they're representing their culture, family, history... Etc while at the same time saying fu.k the white system who have failed us. Maori have always tattooed their faces. It's called Moko. Many of our gangs have high numbers of Maori men in them too.
The gang face tats are heavily inspired by their Maori heritage, and signify which tribe (gang) of warriors they belong to.
It also explains why Maori have such high rates of violent crime. They're still instinctively warriors at heart. And the gangs are their tribes.

It makes my heart ache seeing what the gang members get up to. I think many members join because they want that sense of belonging that they feel to their land, however most of the land is gone now. Its very hard to describe to outsiders what its like to be connected to land and what its like to be pulled away for whatever reason from it.
What a load of shite. If that was the case, there would be millions in gangs in nz.
they are born into the mob most dont join the only ones that would join are the whites all the mobs are just drug runners it is also seen as a club for the bros so if your a man youd join because its kind of like a social event for the guys except they commit fellonys and kill people who provoke them

Sharpie gang -Tang a Lang
People outside of NZ, need to understand that the Maori people have a long history of facial tattoos, or"Moko", so it was already in the blood of many gang members, long before any of these gangs were founded.
They really "once were warriors". And that was not that long ago. That's likely to be the reason that so many Maori men founded or joined gangs.
The gangs were a way for them to satisfy their instinctive urge to live as warriors. They're really the closest thing to warriors that exist these days.
It's no mystery to me, why Maori are hugely over-represented in violent crime stats. Violence plays a major role in being a warrior.
Maori tribes were constantly warring with other tribes too, so it makes sense that the mongrel mob would sometimes do battle against black power or the nomads, for example
Their violent stats representation is due to their criminality not their warrior past.
Gangs were never Tikanga Maori so one can not make that comparison.... Our Ancestors fraught to defend their whanau land and mana... I don't see the same values and priorities being gang members...
@@bittersweet340 I hope more Maori find a voice to speak out against the gangs. Too many Maori 'leaders' such as Harawira and Marama Davison are way to chummy with the gangs. Obviously they're motives are self centered because these same gangs supply meth death and misery to Maori communities.
@@MaskMasterEsquire When you mention politicians they seem to wipe it under the bus... It's a problem in this country my family and close friends I grew up with are in the Gangs so it's easy for Maori and Pacific Islanders to gravitate towards to because its a sense of belonging but it's not traditional culture... Not all gang members are violent might sound hypocritical but it's true well the ones I know are really good parents apart from their drug and alcohol consumption but they do work and provide for their families and support their children in their efforts, not always the case in some family dynamics but i'll leave it there with the stereotyping....
@@bittersweet340I agree, many 'gang members' aren't really what you would call gangstas. However the fact that they're supporting the gangs by their membership is contributing to the power of the gangs over the community. The gangs should be run out of towns, not only by the cops but also by the community.

@jzjzjzj I never said it is justified. Domestic Violence in Any Shape or Form Is Never Justified. What I do think is unless trauma going back to these men's childhoods are listened to, the family will never heal. Look at the abuse in state care for example that these men went through, this is the main reason that 'Gangs' were formed in the first place. Are the collectively completely aware of this?

It's easy to sit back and make a judgement on these guys based on their tattoos, their gang affiliations and ultimately their crimes, but had you been given their lives from day one, would you have done any better? You probably would say, "Yes. I wouldn't have done this or that," but reality is a whole different thing. You're now sitting there making a judgement, based on what you know from your own life experience - not theirs. Often gang members serving sentences here are just 'taking the fall' - it's a loyalty thing.
