Given my 15-21" standard, the Remington HTP did very near the optimum depth and the slower PPU overpenetrated. That extra velocity means more energy was dumped in that 19" the HTP did, but I have to admit a bias toward Remington anyway. I am glad to see them back in production of the .357.

Love the video. You have rediscovered the wheel. The RP 158 SJHP was the King from the 70s to the 90s. It's obvious why. I carried a 4" Security Six with RP 125, 140, &158 SJHP & never felt insecure. The pre-flash suppressed loadings were hilariously overwhelming on both ends. Thanks!

125 grain .357 is a nasty and rude load out of anything shorter than 6". But it was without a doubt a hell on wheels stompin stopper back in the 80s before the high capacity automatics started stealing the show. I carried a couple different 4" Security Six Ruger's as my do it all guns back then. My usual load was Federal 125s but after I tried the Winchester 145 grain Silvertip I went with the Silvertip. It was just a better mannered load to shoot. My primary field loads were commercial 158 grain cast SWCs at 850 to about 1000 FPS. Slow ones in .38 Spec. brass and the fast ones were in .357 brass. Served me well back in the day.

I think both rounds performed great. Generally, weight retention helps in penetration. But, as long as a round gets sufficient penetration, as these two rounds did, weight retention doesn't really matter. Another great video 👍

I’d probably go with the HTP since I’ve got a 4” 28-2, but if I were say going to say hunt with a 6” gun, the PPU might get a little deeper. I feel like the added velocity would result in faster expansion and less penetration, but that’s just a semi-educated guess.

ARGUMENTUM IN ABSURDUM: It's all about placement. If a grizzly can be stopped with a .22 long hit half way between the eye and the ear, I think a blue whale would be stopped with a shot through the eye with a .357. A bear is about 3 feet across and a blue whale is about 16. The largest dinosaur was smaller than the largest blue whale. The dinosaur brains were notoriously small, so it might be hard to hit their medulla oblongata. Some think the largest living relative of the dinosaur is the saltwater crocodile, but I think the North African Ostridge is a closer relative. I would say 36 inches is near the maximum depth of penetration, even for .357 rifles. If there was or is a species with a medula oblongata deeper than that, I am not aware of it. Personally, if I were hit by a BB in the eye, I would not be able to "shake off one of those hits."

I've said In the comments before, Remington got it right way back when they first designed these SJHP bullets.and the "Fragspansion" as you refer to it is their greatest attribute. I've used these on game for many years and never been disappointed! The damage they do in gel, as impressive as it is doesn't begin to compare to what they do in live tissue. And it's been my experience that that small shank that has shed so much weight can be counted on to continue to drive deep and straight.

Missing is a lot bigger concern than overpenetration in the real world. And third, i like through and through wound channels. @@ronaldperkins4222, no offense, but I carry a .357 in my pocket. I do not have anything more concealable and I have more than one pocket/"micro" 9mm. Not even a CW9 Kahr conceals better.
Everything I own under 26" is concealable on some level. Some are less comfortable. If I could carry a semi-auto 12 gauge in my pocket, I would have self-defense rounds for it. I can conceal an 8 round .357, but I'd rather not try that in summer.
If they made an 8 round .357 with a tungsten frame less than 6" OAL, I would have one in each front pants pocket because it would cut recoil. I strictly carry for defense and all firearms do that. My home defense is 12 gauge 2 oz loads of turkey shot to prevent overpenetration.
I have rifles, shotguns, pistols, and revolvers. NOT ONE of them is for hunting. I had a whole herd of white tail deer in my yard during hunting season just outside the city limits and not the least desire to shoot one. I would rather eat mudbugs, alligator, goat, snake, or buffulo bought in a store than venison.
The first day I hunted I dropped a pheasant flushed up with a headshot from my 410. I have dropped a duck at 100 yards. I have been within 9 feet of elk and deer. I have taken pictures of wild goats within rock throwing distance. I have had a large buck running at me on the road where I stood.
No offence, but there is no sport in killing for me and it costs more to hunt in the woods than it does in a meat department. I leave the wild game for subsistence hunters.

When that last package of beef came out of the freezer, my dad would complain about having to buy crappy store bought beef until our next steer was ready to slaughter. There IS a difference; a big one. Venison is a bonus.
I live in an old farm house, nearest neighbor is a mile away with a thick stand of trees in between. I could use my M1 Garand for defense if desired, but opt for a couple of 9mm's & a 12 ga. loaded with 00 buckshot @ bedside.

A little less penetration would be good. Maybe a 3" barrel would be good, a little less velocity, little less weight loss, probably more expansion as it looks like these over-expanded to the point of loosing lead. Would be a nice test. Best ccw revolver in my opinion when not needing something very small is the s&w 686+ 3". Easily concealed, especially in winter.

That is decent bullet performance, but as with the 10mm, I have standards when it comes to .357 Mag, and I just can't think of a single reason why a 158 gr JHP should not scoot out of a 4 inch barrel doing at least 1400 fps. I miss "real .357." My grandpa had a 158 gr Sierra trucking out of a 4 inch Ruger at 1500 fps, and if the bullet missed, the blast and flash would surely convince most they done fucked up. Our grandpa's .357 was a fire breathing monster compared to the neutered shit the call .357 today.
