- My first ever shoot with HD video - if you can call 720 HD. A trip through South Africa's remotest region, in the far northern Cape Province is a desert mountain region called The Richtersveld. Part of a World heritage site, this was my forth visit. Over one hour duration. Filmed in 2009. We were driving a Toyota Land Cruiser 80-series and a Toyota Fortuner 4x4.

4xOverland is one of the world's largest global adventure motoring channels. It is hosted by well known explorer and filmmaker, Andrew St Pierre White.
hahaha.... "the rocks are still warm".......that's good mate!!! hahaha
I was amazed by the fact the rocks are still warm, same as when I found out the the pool on the Titanic is still full ;)
Your passion for everything over landing explodes on screen.
Thanks. That means a lot. You've been watching this channel for a very long time, and had probably seen this before.
@@4xoverland i remember watching this years ago. Always enjoy your content.
Very interesting trip - great storytelling, sorry this is not in anyway a slur on your new Australian trips and films I’ve enjoyed them very much
but it’s “Africa” for me, head and shoulders above. Awesome thankyou for this one Andrew
Any thoughts/views on the Land Cruiser Prado... Andrew
I realy like these kind of Videos with stock vehicles. Shows me that I could one day do something similar without beeing overwhelmed.
I so much enjoyed this film - outstanding!
Another channel

I've noticed you can always tell which car is yours: look for the one with all the doors open.
As usual very entertaining in video and your story telling style, Sir David Attenborough of the 4x4 Overlanding 😊 well done. I am working my way thru your back list. I am current of the past couple of years but enjoy all your work.
I like That Toyota Fortuner. My first time seeing one.
They're based on the Hilux pickup platform, very popular over here.

50:42 - What fell on your head? Hehehe, great video as always. Thank you
amazing trip from the good old Africa . . . . Iam sure Australia are treading you good.. .. but I bet you still miss Africa a bit somehow.
The production quality; camera works, angles, sites, presentation etc are excellent. Information given are interesting and nourishing. And yes. HD does make my viewing more enjoyable thank you. I would be looking forward to photo gallery if you have one.
most hosts would not give commentary from their sleeping bag, but it somehow worked. Very good show. Lovely part of the world
Andrew, you should have a web store with accessories for each 4x4 vehicles you have Gad or drove. I always look at your vehicles for my set ups
I can’t describe the joy I felt when I watched the video 😍 all this footage, similar to places in my country....stunning 💐💐💐
The goatie makes you more animated...careful it doesn't take control Andrew! Pleasantly surprised by the resolution of the footage from 2009. "The rocks are still warm"...very good crack.
Nowhere else on Earth contains such outstanding natural diverse beauty, as that of South Africa, it is a 360 degree landscape of wonderment set beneath the sparkling, density of the Milky Way, one which should be protected for eternity.
I agree that while South Africa does have an abundance of those places, it's not alone. I've been to such places on every continent I've been to, from the Death Valley California to the Gibson Desert, Australia, to the Hartmann Valley, Namibia - to name but a few..
@@4xoverland ...and it is no wonder they do, all born out of the heartland on the Equator of Pangaea.
Andrew!!!!, They are not called windmills. They are called wind pumps. Windmills come from Holland and they mill grain. The things you are referring to, pump water. With wind.
Great show, keep up the good work. Those of us who cant go out there and see it for our selves, appreciate your excellent camera work and brilliant commentary. Thank you.
Thank you Andrew, for adding these ones to RUclips. Love them!
Please keep posting content like this. This s amazing! Thank you
Awesome mate cheers for the content. Way better than any thing on tv
Mr. White, a quick off topic question. I have look through your RUclips video library for any overlanding in winter/snowy condition. The only winter overlanding trip I notice was the small section of your US trip. Have ever did any overlanding in involving cold weather, snowy trip or is that just not your "cup of tea." Thanks
Creamy Games. I wish you had asked
Thanks Andrew for sharing this archived footage here on RUclips. Looking forward to more features!
The giant serpent he is referring to is the grootslang. It is one of south africas major cryptids. It is said to guard precious stones and metals (similar to dragon stories from other parts of the world claiming they love treasure). That hole is said to extend all the way to the sea! The prospector who went down there didnt risk going all the way and came back up when he smelt sulphur.
Sir... as a subscriber to your site and probably similar of age... keep the beard sir. Keep it a goat tee and grow the chin beard part a bit more. You look dashing with it...no homo. Plus love it that you are putting some of your older videos on here. thank you
Well, the Richtersveld is now on my list of must-do adventures!
Great video. Would you be able to share the GPS coordinates for the meteor crater? and HAHA for rocks are still warm!
Yes would be amazing to visit the site
I am very fortunate to have spent time In the richtersveld ,what an astonishingly beautiful place
Always great to see and hear the stories.
Really enjoyed this one. I like your trips where the going isn't so easy, but the reward is epic scenery.
I greatly enjoyed this documentary.
I've seen the end part before and I was still glued to it all the way through. Magic!
Beautifully done! All the way around! Thank you.
You are luck to sleep like that outside.
My uncle was camping and slept outside, he has been killed and eaten by unknown wild animal. Africa is beautiful. But my advice is go in group and make sure you are well armed.
There is no such thing as an unknown animal attacking someone. If they said they didn't know, they lied. Animals do attack people, but it's extremely rare. But every time they do, the animal can be identified, without anyone seeing what happened. Sleeping outside in Africa is no different from many parts of the world, where people are a far bigger danger.
Another stunning masterpiece 👌
I am also feeling the heat here nearly 6000 kms away after thousands of years
Very good advert for those tires on the fortuner!
I can't remember. What tyres were they?
@@4xoverland You never said and I couldn't see but they definitely were a bit inappropriate for the terrain, specially those loose sharp rocks. Love your channel by the way, it keeps me away from things I should actually be doing.
Hey Andrew, did you know the 50th Anniversary of Ranger Rover will be held 26/7/20 at Hawkesbury Showground Clarendon NSW west of Sydney. The new Defender is suppose to be there.
Cheers from Austria. What is the best 4x4 rental company around Perth supplying cars which are allowed to go anywhere and including sufficient recovery equipment?
Greetings from the Mojave Desert, California🏜️🏚️⛏️... Your video is amazing, reminds me so much of our California & Arizona deserts... Keep on exploring and safe travels!🍻
Thanks for uploading Andrew, really enjoyed watching this.
Andrew - I had subtitles on. At 2m10s and 2m13s, the Richtersveld (in subtitles) is referred to as "erectus felt" and "riskless felt". At 3m59s Greg van der Reis(?) is "Greg Thunderous". And many, many more. Some very funny.
Amazing country great filming
Planning a big trip to this area in April ❣️
Me too. 3 nights at Potjiespram on my way back from the Kgalagadi
Thanks for another great video. So, how would you rate the Fortuner? I imagine it managed to get you back
How do you rate the Fortuner?
I have been to the Richtersveld twice and loved jt each time. I just realized again I have seen nothing yet and one could easily spend a month there just quietly observing every little detail one would normally mis. I even saw fireflies at De Hoop campsite January 2020 that I have not seen in Southern Africa in many years.
Hi Andrew, please can you check the 'Captioning' as RUclips didn't get the spelling of some of the places and people you have spoken about.
Loved this episode; great story!
First time watching this and I was glued to it every step of the way amazing area 👍👍👍
Nice thank you Andrew
With the 2 natural springs The guide can't understand why they climb into the tank and not be able to climb out I'm guessing the guide hasn't heard of natural selection, it is tragic & I wonder why no one has made or put a latter in the tank so they could climb out?
They did. More than once. The ladders were stolen.
At least they tryed
Seeing as no water gets in there anyways. Break it down to 1.5m tall. They will be able to jump out then I'm sure.
@@TypeZA But they would be stolen. If they are wood, stolen for firewood, if they are steel, for scrap metal, if they were aluminium, because they are shiny.
This is classic you Andrew! always pushing a vehicle to its limit, on a great off-road adventure, stopping and explaining your surroundings wile showing your good eye for photography and editing!! "love it".. wish you would upload (here) more from your past expeditions. 🌎
“Put it in the shower...” 😄
What a brilliant video. I appreciate the film. Beautiful land. It's so good seeing places with minimal human interference.
Thank you for your great video. Liked the way you explained non-biased.
I love this video, I really want to visit The Richtersveld!
Reminds me of the southwest desert in the US. You do not know what you might find! Beautiful views!
Andrew, I think this just shows that you don't have to have a big land cruiser to go offroad. don't be a snob...LOL
I think you are confusing needs and wants. There is nothing wrong with wanting something better.
@@4xoverland Nah, I'm not. Andrew nothing but respect sir! Keep releasing this good stuff.
LOL. I like your humour that pop's up every now and then. The meteorite crater. ( No spoilers here ).
Ive enjoyed this video before and I’ve enjoyed this every bit as the first, as ever, your videos like this “fire me up” to plan another excursion, you tell a great story, thanks again.
Amazing ,Thank You
Fun watching this again…
I really enjoyed this movie, so different to Australia, thank you so much Andrew.
WOW. my favorite you've given us. incredible. thank you
Absolutely wonderful Andrew. So peaceful.
39:00 ... so why did the designers not build escape steps into the concrete Cassons, or anyone since?
Just a few cinder blocks like steps inside a Lighthouse ...
This is very remote, and very poor part of Africa. It's not in a wildlife reserve. When ladders were places inside, they were stolen.
I have seen this before on RUclips..... good tho
Always Loving your videos keep it up
Im pretty sure I saw this on dstv 10+ years ago. Possible? I remember the scene with the motorbike.
Yes, you probably did.
Never take a nice counter top for granite!
It really looks like the Mojave Desert here in CA
I am sure I have seen this video before??
Looking forward to watching this tonight!
Interesting architecture.
Awesome video!
Creamy games😂
What year is this?
Hello Andrew...i hope u culd help me out hea...i have a 2nd gen mitsubishi pajero also known as pajero SFX hea in india.....the issue is with my 4×4 its engages by itself while driving on normal condition/surface..... while driving 2 wheel it makes a grinding sound and then engages by itself with all the 4 wheel lights flashing....heeelp🙏
8.5km/l is very bad for a Fortuner with no trailer or roof rack.
This video was made in 2009 and fuel economy depends on driving conditions on/off-road fast and slow driving
@@alanmay7929 it's clear they are not doing crawling speed. I drive the same vehicle. I know that I never go below 10km/l unless I'm towing or have something on the roof even if I'm heavily laden.
