The reason Starmer gets criticised for his lack of morality on the Gaza issue is that nobody expects the Tories to have any morality on any subject. So the party that should be taking a moral position gets the blame.

Constantly hearing people say, 'Starmer supports a ceasefire,' while sounds positive like all UK media ignoring the context. Where was he and the government for the previous five months? Most people were killed in the first 3 months and now that there is practically nothing left to bomb in Gaza, portraying him as some sort of saint now that he is calling for a ceasefire-the bare minimum-after 30,000+ are dead and over 70,000+ are injured, just isn't the political capital the interviewer thinks it is.
Moreover, the manner in which he approached the ceasefire is highly suspicious. His probable only real victory was to delay calling for one for so long while concealing UK war crimes from the official parliamentary record.

I had respect for Grace until she refused to come to terms with the fact that JC and his allies in leadership became unpopular. Having good ideas is not enough even in a Fair Voting system, especially in our unfair voting system where swing seats need to be won to form a government. The refusal to address this from the UK Left prevents them from rethinking who they choose to lead their relatively popular ideas. I worked in the Water Industry for 26 years both pre and post privatisation. There were many organisational changes in an attempt to reduce operating costs. These processes were painful for both blue and white collar workers in the industry. For example casual overtime wherever possible was reduced. Productivity payments were were revised. Voluntary and then compulsory alongside the cost savings over the 26 years I worked there. There were no easy solutions for this most essential of services. Competing factors included the need for massive capital investment in new assets, the impact of inflation on pay during the late 70s and early 80s, resistance to change, political doctrine in both government and the TU's, lack of trust between TU's and management and sometimes self interest. These problems are still ongoing with compliance, the ongoing needs for investment, openness and accountability issues and profits in a privatised industry.

If course they did, just as the Palestinians see the October 7th atrocities as fully justified. But civilization must win, and if this means conducting a war where there is collateral damage done to civilian populations, then so be it. I wonder what Grace Blakeley thinks about American intervention in the 2nd World War in Europe? She wants to subsume all of American "intervention" into a Marxian concept of empire; will her marxist theory allow for exceptions? Apparently in her theory, Ukraine is like a weird, untraceable anomaly. Hmm, maybe a different theory would serve, or concrete history. What about American battles with Britain (an empire) before 1820 or so, did she study those? And when Americans went to Britain (for example my father, over there as a bomber pilot in 1944) to save Britain and Europe from fascism? Was all that an "intervention" on behalf of an "empire"? Whose empire? Or was that something else e, historical, gray, concrete, susceptible to uncertainty? I find Marxism intellectually boring, and shallow. I used to know a guy at Uni (Berkeley in the US) who said he thought that marxists, in order to be allowed in to debates, should be made to wear stove-pipe hats and beards. :))

@SillySausage2024 If New Mexico split off, or joined Mexico (it was invaded by the US, after all, in the 1840s), the US wouldn’t allow it. And it wouldn’t allow missiles on Cuba, or be sanguine about Russia funding the New Mexico separatists and sending weapons. Why would Russia tolerate that type of interference?

In the shadow of fading freedom and democracy, where the compass of conscience seems lost and humanity's principles hang in the balance, a dire question looms: are we descending into an age of barbarism under the sway of a select few leaders? Once, Western civilization illuminated the path to liberty and prosperity, yet the stain of genocide in Gaxa now dims that beacon. The suffering of the Palestinian people is not theirs alone; it reverberates through the collective heart of humanity. Witnessing the unspeakable horrors inflicted upon civilians, particularly the most vulnerable-women, mothers, children, and toddlers-evokes a profound anguish. We are all fellow inhabitants of this shared planet, transcending notions of right and wrong. Our humanity demands that we honor and nurture it, for true happiness cannot be built upon the blood and agony of others. The yearning for freedom among Palestinians is not merely their struggle; it echoes the fundamental principles cherished by Western society. In this 21st century global village, where moral obligations transcend borders, we are duty-bound to extend care and support to one another. Palestinians must be liberated from occupation, for their aspiration for freedom resonates with the very essence of our most cherished values....

@SillySausage2024 I mean, most socialists today don't believe in centralized command economies anyways, because the Soviet experiment was so unsuccessful economically. if you look at what Vietnam is attempting, at least, it's full integration into the world economy while keeping industries under state control. I don't know how different that is fundamentally from the Scandinavian countries. There are major differences I'm sure, but also similarities. I'm American, so the people that call themselves socialists here are often mainly advocating for minimal level social services like healthcare. I don't assume many of us want to nationalize every company in America. Though I personally do think certain sectors should be nationalized (health care, military arms, energy).

The key problem with socialist ideas, union power and so on, Unions are just another system of hierarchy. Socialism needs active real policy making democracy to disband the tendency to hierarchy, replacing one boss for another. Participatory democracy and disbandment of party political power with proportional representation.
