Tip for reducing large sheets - Score the big sheets of WC paper with an Exact-o knife, based on the desired measurement, fold it back and forth where it’s scored (approx 3 times) and it will simply tear apart easily.

You should check out Jerry's Artsarama.. You can get the Fabriano 300# cold pressed (22X30) Which I believe is the size you showed) in packs of 10 for only ~$11 / Sheet. That gives you 40 11"X15" Sheets @ only about $2.75 / sheet or 80 5"X8" (About the size paintings you showed) at just over $1 / sheet. Thanks for some great videos by the way!

i'm a newbie for watercoloring and I find your videos very helpful! I'm just about to go to the art store and this kind of makes me feel a little less intimidated going to the store :D

I find that so freaking interesting that you mentioned hot pressed paper being tough drying too fast and a good resource to learn to get a lot of control and become a skilled painter. This is what I think of every day when I paint on Canson Montval :P cause it's such a mean paper it doesn't allow for mistakes.

To be honest I'm thinking about making a video ...I'm not as impressed with Arches, it's a good paper but some things did not work out well. It's great for portraits and realism but the vibrancy of the colors definitely sinks into the paper and that makes it worse for the illustrators. I haven't tried the hot press one cause I thought it would have more flat surface like the Canson ones.

I've had a lot of trouble using masking tape with all of the Canson student-grade papers I've used - the masking tape seems to want to peel the top layer off of the paper, no matter how careful I am. I've ruined a couple of paintings that way. :-( The Fluid blocks don't suffer from this problem with any of the tapes I've tried.

Most art supplier have monster guillotine paper cutter and cut down these sheets for you. Since I only bought these sheets in brick and mortar stores I don't know if online stores offer this kind of service. And if you prefer the rough ripped edge you might not want it precut with the guillotine cutter. :)

Very informative. It is hard to find the Fabriano where I live so I have never used it. My personal favorite is the Arches 300lb hot press...yes I'm one of those odd artists you were talking about! :) The colors seem more vibrant than on the cold press, and the texture is better for portraits. Some day I plan to try the Fabriano...

I love this playlist. So organized and well explained. Both experts and newbies can benefit from this playlist. Subscribed coz I wanna see more of such videos. Also can you please elaborate on this new trending thing called a 'Glass dip pens'? I have seen some artists on Instagram use it for illustration with watercolours.

I just bought paper and noticed Jerrysartarama had 300# in a block... seems odd to me but it was there.. I think it didn't go bigger than 9x12 though.

Arches is pronounced "Arsh", it's French. :)

+lalaithan Hi there! Yes, I've actually heard the correct french pronunciation before. But despite this, my inner american way of reading it usually takes over in the end. :) Thanks for mentioning it though! :) Happy Painting! Best, Meredith

Thanks for making such an informative video, as well as all the other ones.
I have never painted watercolor before, so I was wondering if the first watercolor paper you recommended (The Canson 9 by 12 XL) would be a good fit. I found it at Michaels online, and I have a 50% off coupon there for Black Friday, so it would be about 6 dollars.
Would this be good? Also, what are the exact numbers of the brushes you recommend? I will probably get 3 or 4 high quality ones.
    Thank you so much!

+Sanjana Rajesh Hi there! Canson XL was the first paper I ever painted on, so I definitely think it's a good option for beginners! It has a particularly smooth surface even though it's a cold press paper and 30 sheets for $6 would be a real steal. Just make sure you tape it down with high adhesive masking tape when you are painting, as it will buckle if you don't! :) And I would recommend starting with a #8 round brush, a #14 round brush and a 3/4 inch flat brush. You can get away with almost anything if you have these three brushes. Hope that helps, and thank you so much for watching!! :) Best, Meredith

+TheWittyGrittyPaperCo. Thank you for the quick response! I'll hopefully get the porcelain flower palette you recommended, and I can't wait for the next installment of the beginner exercises.

    140lb in grams?

    • @TheWittyGrittyPaperCo
      @TheWittyGrittyPaperCo  8 лет назад +1

+Kauthar Azman Hi there! This is actually a bit of a sticky subject, so I'll try to make it brief. :) 140lb watercolor paper is equivalent to 300 g/m2 (which translates to 300 grams per meter squared)
Ideally your package of watercolor paper should read: 300 g/m2 - 140 lb or something similar like 140 lb 300 g Sometimes the g/m2 is shortened to just g, which I think is really confusing because it makes you think they are talking about whole grams instead of grams squared.
Anyway, don't get too bogged down by the grams, I would put more emphasis on finding the correct poundage and the g/m2 will match up. Hope that helps, and let me know if you have any other questions, I will try to answer as best I can. :) Best, Meredith
