Such an excellent and well-produced review there Glenn, I've been checking out your videos a lot over the past few months, your N64 reviews are easily the best I've seen. I'm still working my way through your past N64 videos, sometimes in order but then other times when I just want to know about a particular N64 game to know if it's worth either picking up and/or playing then I will seek it out on your channel. I had to check out this review right now though as I've been meaning to play Goemon's Great Adventure, plus I wanted to comment on your most recent video purely to let you know that your reviews are greatly appreciated and that partly because of them, I intend to play a lot more N64 games going forward, beyond the usual ones which I know and love from back in the late-Nineties and just after. Keep up the fantastic work and until next time, Sam.
You're most welcome, I think with Goemon's Great Adventure, I'll probably keep it on a list of game to play co-operatively on the N64, even though it looks like it will be fun in single player, I may play it with my brother later on in the year. Probably after I've played it a bit myself first though... I've got many N64 games to catch up on, despite owning the console since late 1998. I can't wait to play some of the great shooters and racers on the machine which I've bought/rebought over the past few months. Both of the Goemon games are definitely at the top of the list now though for certain, along with both Castlevania titles which I've always wanted to play as well, I look forward to your review of those if they are in the pipeline.
@@n64glennplant have you checked out Bakeru on the Nintendo Switch? I've heard that it's supposed to be a "spiritual successor" to the Ganbare Goemon series, but I haven't actually played it yet, so I'm not sure whether it's good or not. I do agree with you though; I would LOVE to see a proper new entry in the Goemon series...maybe not from Konami given their recent track record, but from some passionate developer out there.
I unfortunately didn't grow up with this series but ever since being introduced to it by another RetrowareTV reviewer, I can't remember who at the moment, I fell in love with it. Don't have a whole lot of experience with the N64 titles but god damn the music in this series is some of the best video game music ever recorded in my opinion. Gonna have to check this one out.
Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon is in my top 10 favorite games of ALL TIME. I never had the chance to play Goemon's Great Adventure back in the day. It wasn't available to rent or buy most places. But I bought it recently, and tbh, I was disappointed. Mystical Ninja was an absolute joy to play. It was kind of easy, but it was such a pleasant story and overall experience that I have very fond memories of. The game just made me HAPPY, and it still does. Goemon's Great Adventure on the other hand is rage-inducing. It's SO much harder, and it doesn't feel hard in a rewarding way to me. It feels like cruel difficulty, where you die and there was no way of knowing what was coming. So I have to replay levels to avoid not dying to a surprise hazard, only to die by a different surprise hazard feet ahead. Then when I finally get to the end, I die at the boss because i don't know the pattern, then start all over. And the overall world doesn't feel nearly as joyful or immersive as Mystical Ninja. It's just a bland side scroller with a sky that is barely visible. The towns feel like they have burdensome conversations. It doesn't feel like a happy fantasy world. I feels like a torture chamber. I actually resorted to using a Gameshark to try to get through some of it, but the game glitches very badly with Gameshark, and it's impossible to finish levels with it. So that's a no-go. I may try to give it another shot one day.
this game and bomberman 64 are 2 games i vividly remember renting back in the day not really knowing what to expect and being incredibly surprised just how good they were
Heck I remember playing this as a kid. It was my favorite game and it also ended up being a favorite or my parents. Even my dad after he was stuck at home due to a work related injury. I remember we all only got as far as the fourth world the underworld level. We could never get to the castle because we couldn't find enough passes. Time skip a few years later I found out this game was a sequel after finding the first game at a swap meet. Both of these games sadly got put on hold for a couple of years until I finally felt like playing them. Took some time, but I managed to pass them both. Man I'm so glad that they put up guides for some of those side quests. Oh and before I finish up. Goemon deserved a better TV show than what we ended up getting. I would have liked a show where they use the characters from the game boy game. The one that has impact become neo impact. I swear if your going to make an anime like opening for a game you need to make an actual anime out of it. I think it was call Goemon Shin shuumei something.
I loved this game. Back in the day I was initially disappointed it wasn't a 3D adventure like Mystical Ninja but the fun 2D platforming and co op drew me in. My brother and I had a lot of trouble with the Impact fights because we didn't know about the baton pass. lol Goemon and Yae are my favorites and I change up who I play as every few levels or so.
Great review! We need more people talking about these games. Just have to say... the pronunciation of some names being off and the use of the first game’s soundtrack throughout the video was strange.
I love this game. I always used to play this with my brother on 2 player. In fact I would love the chance to play it again, It's been a good 22 or more years.
Has the Ultra HDMI had an update or something? I used to notice artifacting around static 2D objects from the VI filter removal, but lately it's been looking much sharper and stable without any artifacting that I can see.
I played the mystical ninja one, and I do prefer 3d for n64 games. But after this review I’ll be in the lookout for this title as well and love the fact that it’s still the same characters and similar music, and the towns are still 3d.
I am a big fan of Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon (3rd favourite game on the system) and when I saw that there was a sequel, I had to get it but I was a bit disappointed to find out that it wasn't exactly like it and it was more in line with the original Legend of the Mystical Ninja and Goemon games that never saw the light of day in the west. I've only finished it once and I still think it is a great game but I am in the group that likes the first N64 one more. I just loved the way it was like Zelda with the castles that were like dungeons and getting new weapons and abilities that helped you get to areas you couldn't beforehand. Never knew about the cut intro and that so have to check that out online if possible since the songs in the first game are perhaps my favourite thing about it. It is a good thing I have a copy of it since I know it goes for a pretty price online nowadays. Great review and it is a shame that this is the last Goemon game we got here in the West. I do have the PS2 Goemon game that was supposed to come out here but never did.
you have the ps2 Goemon? see I didn't like what they did to Yae in that game but the graphic style was pretty cool. Just didn't have the same feel as the n64 goemons games for me
The whole Goemon/Mystical Ninja series and its lack of western support is a crying shame. One of my favorite series as a kid and a big reason I got into emulation, since we got 3 of the titles and there are WAY more in Japan. I don't know where Konami is these days in terms of game development and publishing, since I thought they went full pachinko, but recently they've been re-releasing some of their old library of title in steam collections, and if there's one collection I want way more than Castlevania or Contra, it's a full and complete Goemon collection.
This looks awesome. Didn't care to get it as a kid as I was disappointed over it not being a full 3D adventure like Mystical Ninja was. I'm very happy to have been reminded that this exists; would love to play it someday.
Great title for any N64 collection, but it seems to be a bit rare to find. Great soundtrack too, but some music of this video sounds to be from the prequel, Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon am I right? Even though this sequel have some nice remixes from the first N64 game of the series.
You should, both the anime and games have great music. If I may recommend you one track to get you started, one of my favorites is Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja 4 - Survival Excercise Field. For as mundane as the title sounds, I love the pure and calm nature of this track.
N64 Glenn Plant yeah i am for some reason. Didnt realise you did a donkey kong review recently. I got caught up on them earlier tho. Keep up the smashing work.
thanks for the awesome review! i really enjoyed it! Is there a way i can get the thumbnail as a wallpaper? i cant find a single picture of the box art without all the logos Also cant wait to see what OTHER Konami games will be reviewed
Wow, great throwback. I had no idea which game came first back in the day because I rented them both at the same time, and after renting them enough times the video store told me to keep them lol. I actually would have assumed Mystical Ninja would have been the second game considering that it pushed more into the 3D area. I played both games, but it was probably a 70/30 split favoring Great Adventure - maybe more. I'm sad I didn't know you could change costumes in the game, it would have been so hilarious to play with different outfits. I'm also guilty of not knowing about 4 player mode, but for this specific game it was just me and my brother into it, everyone else was too weirded out by it.
this game sounds a lot like south park tennormans revenge on the 360 xbla. I recommend that if you liked this. Its one of the best platformers to come out in the last 20 years imo. It has the 4 boys and each have their own special powers to get past each section just like this and it is also up to 4 player co op. I'd recommend getting it before they shutdown the online service for the 360 or take the game down since its only available on the 360 on xbla.
@@n64glennplant cool yea im always trying to get people to give it a chance. Its one of my favorite 2d platformers and i think a lot of people just brush it off because of the south park license
I've got the Japanese (ganbare goemon) and the pal version (mystical ninja). But your version is more of a side scroller. Is it mystical ninja 2? My version are completly 3d only. But it's with exactly the same music. Are there 2 or 3 goemon games on the n64?
@@n64glennplant ah thanks for the explanation. I will buy this version, because I'm more into 2d platformers. The 3d version is a little annoying (camera angles etc). Great vid as always. Btw, u have the ultra HDMI mod, but I have a French FRA console with real rgb out (mod) with the original Nintendo rgb snes/GameCube scartcable, and the quality is exactly the same.

@@n64glennplant alright. I'm gonna check it a store nearby in a few days. Because they sell the ultra HDMI kits and sell already modified n64's. Its 200 euro for the modification.
not a bad price, its unusual to find someone who'll sell you the kit because the guy that makes them only sells them to installers because he didn't want people trying to open up and solder their consoles if they don't know what they are doing. the soldering is not for beginners it really needs someone with some previous experience of working on them

if they rereleased this now with 4 player online coop and perhaps a scaling camera system to make it work then I think it would be a great title indeed and would probably make them a ton of cash
i absolutely agree with you 100 percent having 4-player online and a scaling camera system is essential and it would definitely make a ton of money indeed i mean if capcom can add online multiplayer from the street fighter 30th anniversary collection and capcom beat um up bundle including nintendo adding online multiplayer from the nintendo switch online service nes games line-up thing why not konami should do the same for the re-release of goemon's great adventure

Glad you enjoyed this one, I still need to get around to reviewing the first one you know!
Keep up the fantastic work and until next time,
Sam.
thank you sam, this kinda positivity is what keeps me pushing through the many hours it sometimes takes for even a single video
How do you remember all the details of your first time hearing of these games back in the 90s? Crazy good memory.
I have an almost photo memory of long term events but my short term is terrible. That’s why in my day job I need to take so many notes 😂
Such an underrated gem of a video game! This game and Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon are two of my absolute favorite N64 games.
Yeah they’re both awesome, I’d love a new entry in the series as I miss the characters
@@Arthur-uu3px not played but a load of people have recommended it. I’m not a switch user
I loved this game as a little kid playing with my older brother. It was so difficult back then.
Wow, a mermaid with a bazooka! Haven't seen this before.
its a bit like splash but with weapons haha
haha true dat
@@n64glennplant What is Splash?
Joshua Fireseed a movie when Daryl Hannah was unreal hot. She was a mermaid watch it 👍
@@n64glennplant OK, thanks. So she is equipped with ballisticts too, in some way. ;)
Probably derek I think or goemon047
N64 Glenn Plant Derek was my number one guess but I couldn’t be bothered to go back and check. I figured it was either him or Roo though.
RUclips won’t allow me to edit my comment but I searched and it was indeed Roo that introduced me to this fantastic series.
Try playing with yae and use her homing bazooka by holding Z it makes things somewhat easier
i love these games
glad theres more fans around here :)
5mins in and I already want to buy this game hahaha!
Nice review man :D
thanks Mathinus :)
this game and bomberman 64 are 2 games i vividly remember renting back in the day not really knowing what to expect and being incredibly surprised just how good they were
Picked both of them up recently. Not cheap but I had to have them
definitely not cheap but so much fun to be had
Now I want to play this game!
Do it! 😬
Gotta love that Game Over screen (though you might see it more often than you'd want during the game...) 😂
or perhaps you may enjoy watching it haha
Im so buying this game.
not a cheap one but I think its worth getting
Yes!! This is the game from my childhood. I been searching for it!
Mr bigglesworh approves 🐱
I loved this game. Back in the day I was initially disappointed it wasn't a 3D adventure like Mystical Ninja but the fun 2D platforming and co op drew me in. My brother and I had a lot of trouble with the Impact fights because we didn't know about the baton pass. lol
Goemon and Yae are my favorites and I change up who I play as every few levels or so.
I think because I loved coop so much I think that was a big seller for me
Great review! We need more people talking about these games. Just have to say... the pronunciation of some names being off and the use of the first game’s soundtrack throughout the video was strange.
Sadly the soundtrack for 2 kept getting copyright flagged so I had to change it to the first one which didn’t for some reason.
It was the same with me. I saw it on the shelf on the release day by chance and I immediately snapped it up!
Bro.. this is one of the most underrated hidden gems of ALL TIME across ALL consoles
A great title isn’t it
I love this game.
Hmm not that I’m aware of but I did do some post processing on this footage
I remember playing Goemon on SNES, PS1 and N64. The games remind me of the Konami I loved.
Tell me about it - better days wasn’t it
I played the mystical ninja one, and I do prefer 3d for n64 games. But after this review I’ll be in the lookout for this title as well and love the fact that it’s still the same characters and similar music, and the towns are still 3d.
I loved The Mystical Ninja on N64 but unfortunately never played this one:(
even a few years ago it was super expensive to get in the UK
Dis game is so rare not 1 that pops up often price tag is nuts for some of dis games great game great reviews
Yeah I remember I paid £120 for a CIB copy way back in like 2013 or something
@@n64glennplant 300 plus for good cib now
I am a big fan of Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon (3rd favourite game on the system) and when I saw that there was a sequel, I had to get it but I was a bit disappointed to find out that it wasn't exactly like it and it was more in line with the original Legend of the Mystical Ninja and Goemon games that never saw the light of day in the west.
Glenn, out of curiosity, why is all of the music from MNSG and not GGA? Is it because that game had the superior soundtrack 😂😂
Copyright sadly
I played the 3d one on the n64, I never knew there was a 2.5d one also!
And don’t forget the Japanese exclusive board game goemon on n64 too!
@@n64glennplant I could install that on my everdrive cartridge 👀
This looks awesome. Didn't care to get it as a kid as I was disappointed over it not being a full 3D adventure like Mystical Ninja was. I'm very happy to have been reminded that this exists; would love to play it someday.
100% you need to go back and play this, your disappointment its not 3d will soon fade when you see how good it is
Great title for any N64 collection, but it seems to be a bit rare to find. Great soundtrack too, but some music of this video sounds to be from the prequel, Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon am I right? Even though this sequel have some nice remixes from the first N64 game of the series.
yeah that's right, some of the music is like theme music which is in the series
I always loved music with Japanese instruments in videogames, namely Goemon and Naruto.
I really need to check out Naruto many people have recommended it to me
You should, both the anime and games have great music. If I may recommend you one track to get you started, one of my favorites is Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja 4 - Survival Excercise Field. For as mundane as the title sounds, I love the pure and calm nature of this track.
I remember playing this random game with my cousins as a little kid
i remember beeing stuck on the food castle for ever never finished it
Coop sidescroller/platformer that looks, sounds and plays excellent
I need these fellas to return in a new game. The Goemon franchise is a gem. Love em to death.
it would be so awesome wouldn't it
I agree 👍
New glenn plant n64 review!!! Yessssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss.
Lol I’ve been quite active recently I’m
Not sure if you’ve just been missing them in your feed
N64 Glenn Plant yeah i am for some reason. Didnt realise you did a donkey kong review recently. I got caught up on them earlier tho. Keep up the smashing work.
thanks for the awesome review! i really enjoyed it! Is there a way i can get the thumbnail as a wallpaper? i cant find a single picture of the box art without all the logos
Also cant wait to see what OTHER Konami games will be reviewed
its only a standard boxscan image which I manipulated in photoshop so probably not good blown up to a screensaver
@@n64glennplant by wall paper i meant poster XD
it would look even blurrier haha
this game was my childhood lolol, playing it on an emulator currently
This game is bae.. absolutely adore it, and the series!
An absolute underrated gem that sadly, not many people know about. I think it’s by far the best 2D platformer on the N64 and I’ve played them all.
Goemon for smash!
that would be mega
Giant robot as a final smash? yes please!
Hey man do an Ogre Battle 64 review. Loved that one too.
Will try to soon 👍
Speaking from the future, he has now, and it's a corker!
This game was the bees knees on my life the remake most likely be legendary
That would be amazing right
this game sounds a lot like south park tennormans revenge on the 360 xbla. I recommend that if you liked this. Its one of the best platformers to come out in the last 20 years imo. It has the 4 boys and each have their own special powers to get past each section just like this and it is also up to 4 player co op. I'd recommend getting it before they shutdown the online service for the 360 or take the game down since its only available on the 360 on xbla.
now thats a game I've not heard of and will need to go check out!
@@n64glennplant cool yea im always trying to get people to give it a chance. Its one of my favorite 2d platformers and i think a lot of people just brush it off because of the south park license
@N64 Glenn Plant This is mine and my 4yr olds favorite game thanks to you. Could you recommend anything similar?
I've got the Japanese (ganbare goemon) and the pal version (mystical ninja). But your version is more of a side scroller. Is it mystical ninja 2? My version are completly 3d only. But it's with exactly the same music. Are there 2 or 3 goemon games on the n64?
theres 3. one is the 3d adventure, this one is the 2d one and the third one is the board game only one
@@n64glennplant ah thanks for the explanation. I will buy this version, because I'm more into 2d platformers. The 3d version is a little annoying (camera angles etc). Great vid as always. Btw, u have the ultra HDMI mod, but I have a French FRA console with real rgb out (mod) with the original Nintendo rgb snes/GameCube scartcable, and the quality is exactly the same.
ultra hdmi is clearer. remember youtube compressed the footage like crazy which is always a shame. you should see it in person the difference is clear for anyone who has a keen eye for n64 picture output
@@n64glennplant alright. I'm gonna check it a store nearby in a few days. Because they sell the ultra HDMI kits and sell already modified n64's. Its 200 euro for the modification.
not a bad price, its unusual to find someone who'll sell you the kit because the guy that makes them only sells them to installers because he didn't want people trying to open up and solder their consoles if they don't know what they are doing. the soldering is not for beginners it really needs someone with some previous experience of working on them
Hi Glenn, please review mystical ninja starring goemon
I love the mystical ninja series so much. The 64 games bring back so much nostalgia, my friends and I played the absolute shit out of this game together.
Me too man, nostalgia hurts for the n64 goemon big time!
Best 2.5D platformer!
I think so too, much more in depth than Yoshi or Kirby
great review once again glenn i never knew that this game had 4-player co-op once you unlocked it i used to think the game was only a 2-player co-op game like most of the previous 2d goemon games except for ganbare goemon 4 for the super famicom which i think it was techniclly the first goemon game in the series to have 4-player co-op at least that's what i recall from reading a wikipedia article years ago but in recent years for whatever reason wikipedia delated the ganbare goemon 4 article which im already aware that wikipedia is not always known to have acurate information which anyone can write a wikipedia article that tends to be vague at best but i couldve sworn that ganbare goemon 4 had 4-player co-op which i could be wrong but either way im sold that goemon's great adventure actully had 4-player mode which makes me wish that konami shouldve re-release this game in some form more then ever which i hope if its possible to add this game on the n64 classic mini even though its a niche n64 game just like mischief makers but still konami need to take a break from there pinkchiko slot machines and mobile games business model and just re-released goemon's great adventure on a modern console like the switch or something already lol but i digress so anyway look foward to your mystical ninja staring goemon review ^_^
if they rereleased this now with 4 player online coop and perhaps a scaling camera system to make it work then I think it would be a great title indeed and would probably make them a ton of cash
i absolutely agree with you 100 percent having 4-player online and a scaling camera system is essential and it would definitely make a ton of money indeed i mean if capcom can add online multiplayer from the street fighter 30th anniversary collection and capcom beat um up bundle including nintendo adding online multiplayer from the nintendo switch online service nes games line-up thing why not konami should do the same for the re-release of goemon's great adventure
I LOVE the first game, it’s one of my favourite ever.
I bought this recently and haven’t really been getting on with it so far (I’m finding it a bit repetitive/hard, albeit I’m playing on my own).
Your review has convinced me to persist though, I had a similar issue with Doom Eternal (when I loved Doom 2016) but now I love Eternal more than the original.
