You know, originally this song (which appeared in England about the year 1300) was a message from a Lord to his ex-Lady about what she would need to do to get back into his good graces. Apparently, they'd had a falling out, and the man found a creative way of telling her that he didn't want her anymore. You can't make a cambrick shirt without seams. You can't find an acre of land between the shore and the sea. Although today we hear this song performed with only a few of the original verses (and maybe one that wasn't in the song originally), in the full version sung by the old English bards, six hundred years ago, there were quite a few additional impossible feats that the woman would have to accomplish before her ex-boyfriend would even acknowledge her existence. Paul Simon and Art Garfunkle used this song as the basis of an anti-war protest. And nowadays a lot of people think that the song is about a man pining for a lost lover, when in reality he's telling her to _get lost!_ You might consider a cover of _Bless the Beasts and the Children,_ a song that was famously sung by Karen Carpenter in 1971. Or maybe _Only Yesterday._
Not actually true. It's a variant of The Elfin Knight, which can be traced back as far as the 16th century. This variant was first made mention of in the 18th. Not sure where you got your theory from...
Since I live in Russia at this time I have a night. I went outside, took out a cigarette and played this song. It was just awesome. Silence on the street, falling snow, and I stand alone, listen to this song and smoke, while calming down in all this atmosphere. Malukah... your songs are more than just music ... Just thank you :) Ps: sorry my english :D
There is a band in Russia, called The Dartz, they do original songs, but in the past they used to take celtic folk melodies to write their own lyrics. And Scarborough Fair was re-imagined as a song about worker trying to escape a hellish factory in Cherepovets. Considering this and the overall saddness and solemnlity of this melody, I can say that this is the most Russian cover that Malukah ever did.
Scrolling through comments as I listen, nodding at the love posted. *electric guitar starts up* Wait, what? That's awesome! The duet of elegant Malu and badass Alex is stunning!
