      The magnetic field would change if it has an atmosphere as the planet would be able to retain heat and cold in areas giving the planet somewhat of a field of protection. From radiation and temperature.

    • @T3hIluvatar
      @T3hIluvatar 7 лет назад +97

      From what I know, earth's magnetic field comes from it's metallic core. Atmosphere doesn't play any substantial role in that. I guess it would if the atmosphere contained considerable amounts of ferrous metals in it, but then they would probably form themselves into a core anyway, because they're usually the heaviest elements.

    • @Ghuirm
      @Ghuirm 7 лет назад +77

      atmosphere doesnt affect magnetic field but magnetic field affects atmosphere. in order to increase magnetic field you have to heat the core. mars has a relatively small core therefore it cooled early on and the magnetic sphere shrank and suffered because of it and therefore mars lost its water since it's magnetic sphere could no longer protect the planet from the suns particles. and the atmosphere was consequently destroyed. to terraform mars you would have to jump start it's core and produce alot of greenhouse gases. not CO2 but heavier gases such as methane.

      To realistically terraform Mars, throwing a large moon at the planet will not work. Instead, the best solution is to make a large moon it's satellite, which would allow the planet's core to generate a strong magnetic field that is the essential building block towards making Mars habitable for life as we know it. The reason for Mars current condition is because its original moon Ares(the size of Pluto) crashed into it, thus shutting down the planet's magnetic field. The reason for why like on Earth exist is become of the Lunar moon as its satellite. Otherwise, Earth would look like Mars. The planet Mars is really Earth without its large moon.. First of all carbone doesn't even exist, it's a obsolete form of saying carbon which i believe you didn't mean. You meant dry ice or solid CO2. And yes there are thin layers of CO2 of at most few meters on the ice caps but water is still it's primary composite.

But mars is still hard to realistically terraform as it has a thin atmosphere so bombarding it with water or melting the ice is not enough as well as it is out of the inhabitabale zone so after time the ice will melt unless if he make the atmosphere thick enough so that the temperature rises and stays high.

      It doesn't matter. Mars does not have a spinning iron core like Earth does, which is needed to make the magnetic field that protects Earth from the solar winds blowing away the atmosphere. So even if we terraform Mars, Mars will just die again, fast.

    • @johnshields1715
      @johnshields1715 6 лет назад +12

      Well, theoretically we could give it a magnetosphere, but it simply doesn't have enough mass to hold onto an atmosphere at this point in time.

    • @make-trix4036
      @make-trix4036 6 лет назад +6

      John Shields it can be replaced by greenhouse gases though, you wouldn’t even need to increase the planets mass. Only problem is there would still be worrisome amounts of radiation.

    • @DS9TREK
      @DS9TREK 6 лет назад +2

      John Shields, but why doesn't it have enough mass? Venus with 98% of Earth's mass and gravity holds an atmosphere 90 times greater than Earth's. Mars has 38% of Earth's gravity, so why can't it hold at least as much atmosphere as Earth?

      A few decades or even centuries of Cyanobacteria and then add a Dipole. You need to get the process going first, then the Cyano would lower the Albedo by converting red soil to brown. the Dipole would simulate a Magnetosphere.
      Even without the Magnetosphere, you still have 100,000 years before you lose enough atmosphere from 1 atmosphere at the surface to matter.

If Jupiter's Io can be brought to Mars as its satellite, the Martian planet can be terraformed in under 100 years instead of 100,000 years..

    Mars has no atmosphere because it has no magnetic field. Mars cooled down a lot, and the magma in the core solidified. Since that happened, the magnetic field slowly began depleting. Because of this, solar winds can scatter molecules in the atmosphere, and as a result, Mars has an atmosphere of about five feet.
