  • A perfect video of a phenomenal show. This revival is majestic, with the largest on-stage orchestra in Broadway history. Why the scream and commotion? I did it my 2nd time and the reaction forced me to patent it the 3rd. I was quite the prop when there ;-) Michael Xavier (singing), stars as Joe Gillis. Andrew Lloyd Weber's best score, in my humble opinion. ENJOY.

hi Melanie. Thank you so much for this one. I'm on the other side of the earth and I wish I could see this show live. By the way, the scream was priceless! I was laughing so hard and I had to play the moment on repeat! hahahaha

Thank you so much for posting this, Having seen the London production a few times (cough) I was hoping to get across the Atlantic to see it again, sadly it's not to be. My hopes of a new official recording of this are fading faster than Norma, so these are feeding my need! - The orchestration alone deserves to released so it can become the blue print for future productions, and a video release would capture Glenn's simply amazing acting and performance. Thanks again!

Oh Andrew - you are preaching to the choir. There are many of us devastated (and confused) about the decision to not make a recording. Some say it is not over yet, I would encourage you to tweet and write ALW repeating just this. Regarding having posted this, I am ridden with guilt - I've had the inside joke scream going w/Michael Xavier, and though he thinks it's funny, I am not sure he would find my recording it funny. I was planning to not post anything until after it wrapped, but I worried it might make people want to see the show, and if I waited, that would no longer be possible. Are you sure you cannot make it here? It closes June 25th and from what I have heard, is quite different from the London version (thought the cast is obviously stellar). Norma isn't fading - she is as strong as ever. Tomorrow is my birthday and I am seeing it a fourth time, though I admit trying to get involved in Glenn's organization (BringChange2Mind - about mental health stigma) is part of the reason I am working so hard to build a connection with her and the show. They all know who I am, but it's hard to convey what the show has done for me on a personal level. I just hope MX isn't "cross" with me (British people get cross, correct?) for posting this. I figured because you can't see what he is in, it creates intrigue.....hopefully, even if he is cross now, he will appreciate it later when he is nostalgic. He has already been cast in "The Prince of Broadway" and Fred Johanson (Max) h as been cast as the next Phantom in Sweden. It's so wonderful seeing such talented (and KIND) people achieve the success they deserve. I have been cast in my own show since seeing this as well, but my passion right now lies in raising awareness through creative means about mental health, mental health stigma and addiction. We are losing too many talented (and regular) people to these problems, and surprisingly, so few want to hear about them. Thank you for your kind words. Keep your eyes open - and if you can get here, it would be lovely to meet you. I have to race back to Canada May 31st for hopefully just ten days. I hope to catch the show again in June, but I need to plan for May being it for me. Keep trying - you won't regret it! And DEFINITELY reach out regarding the recording. Preserving it for future productions is the best reason I have heard. Cheers - your message cheered me up on a dreary day, Melanie.

Andrew Armstrong are you serious Keates?? how do you know this and why on earth are they not releasing it?

    • @andrewarmstrong3220

keates1 yes that's my understanding too, both the London and Broadway production have been recorded and filmed. My only hope is a Hollywood film may happen and that's why they are not releasing a recording of this production.

I suspect the whoop sounds a little worse on the mic than it might have seemed in a full theater; but it still seems a bit much. The orchestra sounds great. Not sure the bathing suit was the best idea for the start of 2nd half, but it definitely makes a point about what he has had to become.

This man is trying to sing about the struggle to make it in Hollywood and about the difficult choices his character has made to end up where he is. It is a very serious song with, if you bothered to listen, lyrics describing a very cynical take on Hollywood. And there you are, screaming at him as if you were at a rock concert. Have some respect, both for the performer and to your fellow audience members.

Actually, I spoke directly with Michael Xavier (the actor) about the
scream, on Twitter, then in person. He loves it. I asked if it
took away from the SERIOUSNESS of the song lyrics, which I know well and more than understand, since I am an actor and seeing it a fourth time. He said he likes it because it's an ice breaker and gets the audience going - I got permission. The thing I feel uneasy about is filming it and now sharing it with people who haven't yet seen the show. I decided it might draw them to see it.
Have you seen this Broadway version? There is something you can't see in this video that causes the scream. One might say that in itself distracts from the seriousness of the lyrics, so perhaps you should contact the director. I
think I will make this video unlisted now, until the show wraps,
which is unfortunate because everyone seems to be enjoying it, but
showing it out of context is unfair to the show and him, which was the reason I didn't share it for a long time.
In other songs you hear me crying (as well as in this one, during the black and white section), so please don't assume you understand my emotions. And if you listen, the audience follows SUIT very closely, no pun intended (which you'd get if you saw this production). Again, have you?
Lastly, he isn't TRYING to sing - he SINGS, flawlessly, a difficult song, with difficult physicality, including getting onto that lawn chair holding that last huge, beautiful note. I filmed it to capture his performance, not only our reactions to memorable sections I don't believe you're aware of.

My apologies Melanie if I was rude. I have always thought of this as a very, very serious song, perhaps one of the most important songs in the show. I don't think Michael should be encouraging screaming though to be honest. I think the choice to have him on display like that by the director is a wrong choice, as it is distracting from the song. I guess this encourages attention from the female members of the audience! But I am certain when ALW and the lyricists got together to write this, having the audience scream out was not what they had intended.

You know...you seem to love this show so passionately, and I don't know where you live....but I saw the original Annie and Peter Pan w/Sandy Duncan as a kid, watched "The Sound of Music" daily, learned it all by ear at age 2....saw "Cats" twice at 12, and it led me to three years of pro dance training...I eventually majored in Theatre (Musical) and focus on straight acting. I have seen soooo many shows, and I can honestly say - that I have NEVER been moved the way I was in this show. Granted, the first day I saw it something awful happened, but the emotional release this song allowed me was so intense. It had nothing to do with the man, it had to do with the music and Norma - I can't say more without getting super personal, but I am sure I did in that other thread as I seem to take it personally...any negative remark on this show. I really think you should take these illegal youtube links, remove them from your brain and get here to see this show. Acting is about emotion, not perfection. The most I ever saw a MOVIE in a theatre was five times. This PLAY is going to top that. The second time I saw it, it motivated me to get acting, within two days I had a part in a play and a music video. That night I did the scream as I knew what was coming AND the audience was a bit sleepy. I told him it was me on Twitter and he thanked me and said it was awesome. Therefore, when I was there a month later (another sleepy audience - Wednesday matinee) - I did it, as my trademark. I can see what you're saying, but its sort of an inside joke and BELIEVE me, I get the song. There are reviews out there that spoil the show, tell every part, and the truth is that even people who have seen the movie forget a lot of the intricate details of the relationships and story. They tell it so well. When I was learning Meisner technique, the whole point was to be REAL.....to tell the truth in exaggerated circumstances, not to exaggerate. In this sense they are putting on a masterpiece. I am partly bummed that the show I fell in love with is the one that's a limited run, but I am also amazed that I came to NYC alone for four months to get my groove back, so to speak, and my months matched the show's. I think my late Mom is behind all of this, trying to help. If you send me your email address, I can send you another link that is unlisted. I would like you to see the difference in singing and in emotion. I wish I had waited to post this. I really hope Michael hasn't seen it - I was trying to get his permission but couldn't ask that online and even in person, I busted out laughing. I planned to save it but the day the Tony's were announced I was angry and posted it. I think the music is for all and might get people there, and the scream might create curiosity. HE will surely enjoy it once it wraps and he's nostalgic so I am glad I captured it for him. Are you able to see the show? Or have you? I really can't tell. If not, I say get here - be open - and let them take you somewhere. It's not about technicality. The 60-year old man next to me had tears running down his face. It's about loss, and regret, and love and pain and not knowing how to go on....it's about struggling and working and trying to impress....it just hits so hard in the heart I find....I simply can't get enough of it. *Send me your email, or email me: viennamel@yahoo.com.* (See? Vienna is in my email because that was my first trip with my Mom, to Vienna, Salzburg and Prague, to see Mozart's homes, The Sound of Music everything and even the theatre in Prague where Mozart premiered Don Giovanni AND where the filmed all of the theatre scenes in Amadeus.) Please trust that I am no novice. Hope to hear from you.

PS - IF you see this production, you will be on the bandwagon that they make a new cast recording as well. Apparently this cast surpasses the last by a mile (I know people object about Glenn, but those people are idiots)....the ORCHESTRATION is more intense, there are key changes....did you see my video: "The sneakiest sneak peek"?

This cast recording is necessary. Glenn wasn't that great on the OBC but she is incredible now. The orchestra alone should have been more than enough.

Do you happen to have the full show? I've seen it repeatedly and am going again in a few weeks. It's my favorite show and I would love to get a copy of this. IMO Glenn is better than ever.

    • @MelaniePreston
      @MelaniePreston  7 лет назад +2

I am so glad to hear others are going repeatedly, too. What this show does for me is almost inexplicable. I am crushed the show I could see for the rest of my life is a four month run. On the other hand I left a very bad situation in Canada to come here four months and turn things around, and the four months coincided with the show, which is pretty darn miraculous - makes you really get spiritual. It is next to impossible to do what I did here, and I certainly can't discuss it in detail this way. It takes away from the show trying to capture any of it, which is why they are doing us such disservice not at least making a new recording of the cast. There's a guy Kenny who posted one song and got tons of views and recently posted several more. He seems to be sitting all over, so I would check out his links. I feel horrendously guilty posting just this, and hope to Gd MX isn't mad if and when he finds out. I was trying to get his permission as we have spoken, but not easy online or even in person. I posted this one in the end because I was furious at the Tony's and I hoped it would draw people into going, unlike Kenny's link of Glenn which people are taking out of context and judging. I film certain things blindly, as in NOT looking through the camera - at symphonies at home....this usually means I end up with heads or the top of the theatre. It's miraculous this one fit the screen, truly miraculous. I tell people to email me so we can really talk about it, but I never hear. Email me! viennamel at yahoo dot com. How many times have you seen it so far? I've been there three times and have a fourth planned. As of now I leave May 31st but hope I can manage getting back here as quickly as I'd like in June. I'm going to be very sad when it's over, but "I can't think about that right now, I'll go crazy if I do...I'll think about that tomorrow." - Scarlett O'Hara. ;-)
