Intuition Vs Logic as a "Beat Juggler"

    I taught Shilpa her first #offset "Beat Juggle" pattern today. There are a plethora of ways a DJ can initiate an #offset and what you see/hear in this video is just one of those approaches. More importantly tho, the beauty in today's #WeTalkinBoutPractice session with Shilpa is you get to experience her experience her intuition.
    We all are born with 2 systems that operate our bodies. The brain and instincts. The brain is analytical. It processes every bit of information it receives and as a result, works ridiculously slow. Your brain works on a conscious level. Intuition is subconscious. It takes a split second for your instincts to make a decision, and every choice your instincts make is instant and effortless.
    Shilpa, like many of you reading these words has grown accustomed to DJing digitally. As a result, bad habits like looking at her laptop to confirm her timing or engaging her mixer's cue pads to reset herself hindered her development more than it helped. But today, Shilpa discovered the awesome ability of her intuition.
    The 9:13 mark of this video drives my point home. With a little bit of coaching, Shilpa finally shed herself from relying on a computer as her sonic guide or cue pads for short cuts, and delegated the responsibility for navigating her way through the music she was manipulating to her own natural senses. The part of her that existed before she ever laid eyes on the type of DJ technology that exists today. The part of her that's been her true guide since she was born.

    7:49 was the “Ah ha!” moment she needed and my Ah ha moment too 😃 so glad to see her receive this revelation ❤️ I started djing when I was 16 using dual CD’s. My mentor would bring his vinyl and try to teach me, but I was very intimidated by records and at first didn’t want to even touch a record in fear of the needle jumping. As I got older and played at clubs, guest djs would be all vinyl djs bringing in crates and crates of records. I thought it was sick, but was too intimidated to begin my turntable journey because as I would watch them play, I did not understand what was happening, be blown away and put turntables in the too hard basket. Then I became a resident dj at an all hip-hop/rnb club and became really good friends with MC. One night he brought me in this DVD....Wildstyle. I knew I wanted to use turntables. Then he brought in another DVD Scratch....I was hooked. I’ll never forget that one segment with Qbert, he was beat juggling and briefly explained what he was doing....that was my Ah ha moment! From there I bought a pair of technics and never looked back. Knowledge is power, once you learn and understand something and you remove the “mysticism”, your brain shifts and your journey begins. That’s what makes magic special and why a magician never reveals his secrets. Shout out to you Rob. Thank you so much for sharing your magic with others. Peace and love from Australia ❤️

    Im not convinced that turning back the record quickly and find the beginning again is an essential skill nowadays. In a live environment you still got your queue points right? So no reason to panic.
    What I can think of practicing to rewind does is increasing:
    - vinyl control
    - rewind accuracy
    I think vinyl control comes naturally when you learn scratching and I cant see the benefit of having really good accuracy. Isnt it only useful when you bring vinyl only? And even then you can queue with the needle

    • @K1ck1992
      @K1ck1992 Год назад

      I get it now. its really important for beat juggling where u kind of want that dirty sound sometimes of not being dead accurate and skip a lot of times back and forth throughout the record. If u have it hooked up to a computer it still holds true that its probably just faster to press the button. even one revolution at max speed is already slower depending how u press your buttons. So if u don't want to beat juggle setting q points before is better. This year DMC beat juggling someone pointed out in the comments that ppl press buttons alot. there is different reasons, too for that.
      Anyways whats more challenging for me instead of rewinding is forwarding the record on the fly. u really have to keep track of your sound and position on the record when using forward, too.
