  • Mary Beard, Cambridge University. This six-part lecture series examines the continuing engagement throughout history with images of Roman emperors and its impact on Western visual art and culture.
In this first lecture, originally delivered at the National Gallery of Art on March 27, 2011, the esteemed classicist and professor Mary Beard introduces the prejudices, conventions, and disagreements that underlie the identification and reception of Roman imperial portraits beginning with Julius Caesar.

I grew up in DC and visited the National Gallery, the Freer, and the Sackler, and even the Arts end Industries Building very often. I know exactly where they stationed her. She's a damn legend. It is not inapt that she lectures in Washington, the current, falling Rome.

Disappointed with this lecture actually. It is more about portrait and bust making than the subject. This is the art history relating to the art pertaining to ancient Rome rather than the emperors who ruled it. Having said this Beard is always great to read or listen. I have read most -if not all- of her books with great enthusiasm.

How did Suetonius know about Caesar's appearance? Past writings and documents and existing statuary lost since his time. That he didn't cite them means absolutely nothing. Ancient Rome was rich with libraries and repositories stuffed with copies of all sorts of testimony and poetry and speeches and more. The suggestion he conjured up detail from thin air is a terrible slur.

@@eutropius2699 I think Peter is one of those people who has a disability with language processing. If I may try to interpret, I think what he's trying to say is that some people don't listen to women when they speak, or won't take a woman seriously as a scholar. When they act like that, they are not only erasing her own voice, but all the voices from the past, that she gives new life to, by conveying their perspective to a modern audience.
