My mum speaks very fondly of Mary's mum - she attended the junior school Mary speaks of at the start of the interview. I believe she was incredibly kind and nurturing, and was really supportive of my mum doing the 11+ when I don't think it was something that was seen as important at home.
Prof. Beard is what she is: a competent historian, a gifted speaker, and a credit not only to the humanities but also humanity. Strive to emulate and exceed - just as she has done and does.
This is a wonderful interview, as are all of yours. This one is special to me because I love History and have learned so much from Mary Beard. I have read more about Roman history than any other period and that is largely due to her.
Mary changed the views of men and women! Has been struggle in my life, even infuriating , not now that I’m 57 😄 , the constant intention of “reducing “ the intelectual value, to a sexist comment or literally not looking to my face, but staring at another part of my body with absolute disdain. It takes a lot of self stem and confidence to overcome those attitudes, which at the time I didn’t have.Sorry to say has not changed that much. The image of women in TV still needs more Mary Beard’s ❤️
My Mum taught me to read and write before I went to school.. My love was Norse Mythology and English composition. ( But I lived on a council estate) I entered a museum when I were a lad, and was told to clear off. Because the back last had partly detached from my shoe ! ???? (I'd have liked a career in Academia, but didn't have the fare)
@@adamgrimsley2900 I am sure you have never said anything equally controversial in your lifetime. She has said many, many, many things since and before that statement that have added incredible value to both academia and popular history. No one would say anything if we sought perfection in everything we say.

This goes to show how appearances are and can be a mistake when some one looks like a bag lady and is surrounded with cats . And then mesmerizing you with their knowledge.
When we used to play football and cricket around our area in the 70s before colour TV even, ball would sometimes go into ladies with cats gardens, and some these lovely ladies would offer u tea with bread and jam, and I could never forget that, bag lady with cats or not, and I found them so interesting and always warm,, I'm not English, to me I take people as they are, as the world then was more vivid, and intresting
Several times now I have come to these " chats " hoping for some insight into the subjects political thinking. Perhaps even challenging some of O' Brien's smug liberalism and time after time I'm disappointed. For one O'Brien can't help inserting himself , egotistically to the fore. But in the episode with Michael Rosen ,of whom I am a great admirer there was so little to challenge O' Brien's assumptions about Labour and anti- semitism. So I'll get my coat and goodbye.
A fantastic historian and presenter. Great to learn more about her life
Mary Beard is one of the very best of her generation. Always worth listening to. You always learn something new and wonderful.
She’s an inspiration! I met her once when she came to do a talk in our high school, and she was incredibly engaging.

The way her eyes light up when she gets to talk about a topic she loves is just inspiring!
Such an interesting conversation, thank you very much for letting us listen.

Lovely smile and carries her learning so lightly - a delight!

I really appreciate Mary Beard, enjoyed the chat!
A great discussion. Very interesting. Thanks
She is a great speaker. She radiates enthusiasism for her subjects. James clearly enjoyed this interview.
Her leveling of Boris Johnson. In the Roman vs Greek presentation. An absolute joy to watch.

What a joy Mary Beard is.
Amazing teacher. More than an academic, more of a mover and shaker creating change. Beyond that she is interesting, never boring.
Thank you for this video
Couldn´t stop listening although I thought I knew so much about her. Well done! :-)
