James O'Brien meets Mary Beard

- Arguably the world’s most famous classicist, Mary Beard has an incredible talent for making ancient history engaging for everyone. Her fascination with the past began at the age of five. During a visit to the British Museum, she saw a slice of ancient Egyptian cake on display and was thrilled when a curator opened the case and got it out for her. For nearly forty years, she was a Professor of Classics at the University of Cambridge before retiring in 2022. She’s also a TV and radio presenter, classics editor for the Times Literacy Supplement and has written numerous books on classical history and culture. Her latest book, Emperor of Rome, is out now.
Mary Beard is one of the very best of her generation. Always worth listening to. You always learn something new and wonderful.
The way her eyes light up when she gets to talk about a topic she loves is just inspiring!
She’s an inspiration! I met her once when she came to do a talk in our high school, and she was incredibly engaging.

This is a wonderful interview, as are all of yours. This one is special to me because I love History and have learned so much from Mary Beard. I have read more about Roman history than any other period and that is largely due to her.
With regards to the curator it shows how one kind act can stay with people.

Has been struggle in my life, even infuriating , not now that I’m 57 😄 , the constant intention of “reducing “ the intelectual value, to a sexist comment or literally not looking to my face, but staring at another part of my body with absolute disdain.
It takes a lot of self stem and confidence to overcome those attitudes, which at the time I didn’t have.Sorry to say has not changed that much.The image of women in TV still needs more Mary Beard’s ❤️

Couldn´t stop listening although I thought I knew so much about her. Well done! :-)
My Mum taught me to read and write before I went to school.. My love was Norse Mythology and English composition. ( But I lived on a council estate) I entered a museum when I were a lad, and was told to clear off. Because the back last had partly detached from my shoe ! ???? (I'd have liked a career in Academia, but didn't have the fare)

@@adamgrimsley2900 I am sure you have never said anything equally controversial in your lifetime. She has said many, many, many things since and before that statement that have added incredible value to both academia and popular history. No one would say anything if we sought perfection in everything we say.
@@michellepollock9804 nope, never said that innocent people deserved to be forced to jump to their deaths or have their plane crashed. Thousands innocents murdered. Never said they have it coming.

This goes to show how appearances are and can be a mistake when some one looks like a bag lady and is surrounded with cats . And then mesmerizing you with their knowledge.

Several times now I have come to these " chats " hoping for some insight into the subjects political thinking. Perhaps even challenging some of O' Brien's smug liberalism and time after time I'm disappointed. For one O'Brien can't help inserting himself , egotistically to the fore. But in the episode with Michael Rosen ,of whom I am a great admirer there was so little to challenge O' Brien's assumptions about Labour and anti- semitism. So I'll get my coat and goodbye.
