i get you rob, there was something about kendall's melancholia that always kept me so attached to him, no matter how horrible he acted he reminded me of a scorned child just acting out
I feel that way about every one of the Roys tbh, Kendall most of all but they all have their moments where you sit and can’t help but empathise with them despite how horrific they generally are. They never had a chance
Kendall was going to say “I wish I was dead” and Jeremy confirmed this😢the pause there was just heartbreaking
Some fun trivia, Alan Ruck (Connor) actually did injure his arm in real life so they just wrote it into the script
Same with when Tom had that black eye or whatever in season 1 and they had him joke that it was from a sex thing with Shiv lmfao (which always felt out of character for me and it’s clear they had to just write it in; I can’t see him and Shiv having that kind of sex with the way their relationship was)

It's been established in this show that for rich people, a watch is basically the most generic, thoughtless gift that you can get someone. (Tom gets one for Logan, Logan gives one to Frank,, etc.) and Kendall is in a bad place emotionally and she thinks that giving him an extremely generic gift (one she didn't even bother to get engraved) is going to make it better? The whole point of that exchange was to show that Naomi is not as emotionally invested in the relationship as Ken believed she was. The watch is a symbol of how little she actually knows him and what's important to him, how little depth there actually is between them. Jeremy Strong said that in that moment, Ken was thinking "you're supposed to be one of the only people in the world who gives a shit about me at all, and you give me this generic watch." and it hurt him. It's been a surface level relationship the entire time but he didn't really realize it until that moment. I do think Naomi cares about Ken but not to the extent he needs her to care. She doesn't truly love him. If you notice, he tells her he loves her earlier in the season but she never says it back, which actually is a repeating pattern with Ken. Him expressing unrequited affection. He says "I love you" to Rava and she doesn't say it back. He says it to Naomi and she doesn't say it back. In a cut scene he tells Jess he cares about her and she doesn't say it back. Essentially, I think you're totally right that he's a child and deep down all he really wants is to be loved.
That's a good analysis of the situation from Kendall's POV, but I think Naomi cares for him quite a lot. If it was just surface level, she'd get pissed and leave the birthday party after he insulted her. But she stayed, tried to figure out what Kendall felt, and stood by him through the night when he was at his lowest. And she understands him more than that bad gift would tell: She was right about Logan loving the "broken" Ken, and she advised him to take the deal, even though they're both incredibly rich, because he can finally get out of the shadow his dad casts on his life.
Their relationship is in a pretty bad spot, and that look of exhaustion she gave at the end wasn't a good sign, but she must care for him quite a lot to stick around up to this point.
I do agree she cares for him, just not as much as he needs her to. She doesn't LOVE him and Kendall wants/needs someone who loves him unconditionally and understands him on a deep level. Her gift showed that she didn't actually understand him that well, even if she did care. If she had, she would have known that a non engraved watch was not going to make him happy, especially not in that moment. Keep in mind they mostly bonded over drugs and both being the "black sheep" of their respective ultra wealthy families, which is definitively something that can form a bond but not really a very healthy one, especially long term.

To your point about how she must care quite a lot to stick around up to this point, that's true, but it's also true she dumps him after his meltdown this episode which is why she doesn't come with him to Italy. So again, she cares. Just not enough.
Even though Kendall has annoyed me this season, I still feel bad for him. None of these people are mentally well. I think Naomi means well but she and Kendall aren't good for each other. And yes, that's Alexander Skarsgard.
How we always root for Kendall and then feel sorry for him when he crumbles is the reason why Jeremy Strong is the best actor in this series.
If only Connor had taken his coat off…

Poor Kendall. No matter how rich you are, there is always something inherently sad about having to throw yourself a birthday party.
This one was almost too much to bear. The lack of empathy - the Roy kids have grown to consider everything as a chess move and life overall as a go board, kill or be killed, and it hurts them so deeply. It's great to have Tom and Greg as comedic palate cleansers.
That scene in the compliment garden was so good. I thought for sure that Tom was gonna smack one of the performers.
And Connor. Connor doesn’t see it that way either.
Roman is a TERRIBLE winner!! So annoying when he wins because he rarely ever does win.
The high of Kendall manic episode is over, now the depression and low part kick in. Kendall is just... being Kendall
Roy kids do love each other, in a weird way. They are all just emotionally broken and don't know how to express it. Also, they grew up in the environment of “cryptic corpo talk” and “moves” and "plays", when there is always an angle, it is always business first, something to be gained from someone else and nobody says what they think or even mean.
The next episode and going forward is when the show hit a new high for me 😁

Alexander skarsgard was a cool cameo for sure in this episode I feel like Roman gets so consumed by wanting his dads validation that he doesn’t care about hurting his other siblings for it another great episode
He’ll be a consistent character. Not a cameo.
This. Episode. Man I really cant help but feel for kendall in it, he has to throw his own birthday party, no one there is his actual friend, the only acknowledgment from his father is trying to buy him out of the family company in a card that says "fuck you", his ex wife has moved on, his girlfriend gives him a generic gift proving she doesnt know him at all, roman steals his idea and humiliates him- literally pushes him when hes already (mentally) down, and the homemade presents from the only people he would get unconditional love from- his kids, are lost amongst the piles of other thoughtless gifts from his yes-men and random people. Yes so much of it is his own design, hes certainly to blame for so much of his own suffering- but enough of it comes from the people around him too and so much of the root of that is logan. So much of his own life is out of kendalls control- its why he micromanages his party and why hes so obsessed with connors coat. Its no wonder he was about to say "I wish I was dead", but when he changes it to "I wish I was home" where does he even really mean? Manic kendall is annoying and frustrating, hes on a high saying yes to everything and being an asshole- the counter to that is the depression that comes after. High highs mean very low lows. Hes such a complicated, well written and well acted character that even when hes at his most terrible I can still feel empathy for him because I know where his actions come from. Its not excusing them, just understanding. Bravo to the writing team for making such a nuanced character and to Jeremy Strong for adding even more depth 👏
I feel like Roman was being mean to everyone because they would always hurt him both mentally and physically as a child. Like in Season 1 when Roman was asking about being put in a cage as a child or when Logan slapped him and he wasn’t surprised
It was alluded to in recent episodes that Kendall's 40th birthday was coming up.
I was expecting a 50th. Would never guessed he was so young.

I've always been behind and rooting for Kendall. I have such empathy for him even though he's a rich prick. He, as well as his siblings are all broken. Kendall is a child looking for love in all the wrong places. 😢

I’ve always said this Kendall is not older than 12 years I swear.

I was kinda surprised when you guys liked Tom and Greg in season 1, but at this point? Tom is such a sociopath.
Whilst a deeply weird and flawed character I actually find Tom one of the most emotionally vulnerable characters. His emotions are just tumultuous. I think describing him as a sociopath is a deeply wrong take on the character, especially when him not outing Greg as the mole during Boar on the Floor is one of the few selfless acts we see a character do on the show (or agreeing to cover for Greg to keep him out of jail). Greg on the other hand is one of the most conniving, selfish characters on the show, he is truly a wolf in sheeps clothing (expect he is very unsuccessful in creating any damage).
@@mimiarnn The scene in the compliment garden is a key one for me on locating these characters...Greg instinctively says things like "Thank you" while Tom gets pissed off. And Greg was not being disingenuous, fake. Someone like Tom might have that take, just like he gets annoyed by the (admittedly silly) complimenters. I actually agree that Tom is one of the more genuine (on a spectrum...), but Greg is not conniving and selfish. He has some traits that the more sociopathic characters would count as virtues in themselves. I get a sense of *feeling* from Greg, color, that's missing in the Roys for instance.
