There are a few other options you forgot to add to your list:
Retro-Technology. Even in 2023 there are still apparently people who are publishing games for things like the NES, SNES, Gameboy, Mastersystem, and Genesis. There are people out there who buy and play them; while it may be a fairly niche market, there is still a market for them. Also when working within the limitations of older technology, it can help eliminate scope creep and force you to make more creative solutions in your designs. The community of people wanting to keep these systems alive will likely be happy to support you as long as you're not developing shovel ware.
Home-Arcade machines like the iircade, Futurcade, Complete Cockail, etc. These again are a very niche market, but in this case you're also targeting hardcore collectors who have dropped hundreds or thousands of dollars on a machine that has a limited library which you can add to.
Smart fridges. Again, very niche - here you'll be targeting people with more money than sense. Either premium games or skinner box microtransactions (gatcha, perhaps?) will be your best bet for this market.

I think the biggest gap in the VR market is for GOOD VR games. Making something that's high quality, that is uniquely VR, and that people will play for awhile. There's still a ton of room for innovation in the VR scene, and a game like Gorilla Tag is a good case study. There's a lot of focus on putting 2D games in VR, but the real joy comes from games that work BECAUSE they are VR.

I am actually working on a couch coop game (think the likes of ‘Worms’). For these type of games I guess it makes more sense to target controller platforms like the switch. Targeting windows could work but I guess there is even less market for these type of games on pc.
p.s. I know that couch coop itself it quite niche. :)

  • @ilianceroni

I hope this does not come up as rude or “aggressive”, but I think you made a “conceptual mistake” by putting Apple/Mac and Linux together, because of Steam Deck, and a new apple’s “up scaling/up platforming” program. I am not talking about their position on the tier list, I am just referring on having a single position for two platforms that have become very different in recent years.
You guys point out the Steam Deck, but do not mention that it is running a Linux distro, which means developing for it is like developing on other linux distros. This means if you launch your game on Windows and Steam Deck as targets you are already developing for Linux and you can get all of Steam support for the Steam Deck. While you can take advantage of the dark magic spell called Proton, developing specifically for the Steam Deck will assure a better performance on it and on Linux desktops in general, which is always nice. Of course, I’m not suggesting on targeting only Linux😂.
Similarly thanks to an app/dev kit/program Apple is now a single platform, as you can port all that runs on iPhone on iPad and MacOs (although, only the Silicon/M1-2 series, as they’re on ARM like the mobile devices). This means if it makes sense for your game you can develop it for iPhone and selling it to iPad and MacOs users with fewer resources than developing for the 3 devices.
To reiterate, I am not contesting the placement on the tier list, but pointing out that Mac and Linux are not “alternative windows” anymore, as both changed a bit and therefore a dev should considers the pros and cons of each of the two separately.

Very curious on this as well. Always been interested in game dev, but ended up getting a degree in Computer Science (which, while in depth programming, doesn't include all the aspects of game-dev), so currently a full time developer in the usual software side.
Started doing game development as a hobby, but part of me is a bit concerned that I'll either keep doing it as a hobby, or eventually go solo developer, purely because I don't have the same qualifications as an actual game dev course (e.g. I might be good at programming, but I imagine it'll be difficult to find a game-dev full time job since I don't have the engine or modelling/rendering experience, compared to someone who did a game dev degree). Am I screwed because I didn't do a game-dev course, or is it reasonable to transition towards a more game-dev job purely by gaining the experience as you go?

If you want to become a game programmer, I think you're better off just getting a CS degree. You learn how to learn nearly any programming language there, and it offers you a very solid, and often better paying fallback plan if you're not in the mood for crunching 6 months every year. It's harder to get into regular CS jobs with a gamedev degree than the opposite.
But, we're working on a very in-depth video, where we talk to people who both have and haven't gotten a degree in gamedev, so we can get a more nuanced, and thorough video. I don't think deciding to get a degree is something that you shouldn't just listen to some random kid on the internet's opinion. This one will take some time though, but I expect to release it in the next month somewhere. -M

@@bitemegames definitely! No regrets getting the CS degree at all, was just curious how it related to game dev specifically. Very excited to see the video, looking forward to it! :D

@@Silentstrike46_I may be late, but want to give my two (or more) cents.
I don't think a formal game dev education is necessary at all. I mean, it's nice to have, but from what I've seen, game devs come from all kinds of trades that are related to media or at least maths or art. Even in my aborted physics degree I learned programming in Python for simulating stuff, which in the end has helped me quite a lot (now it's C#, but the leap wasn't too far). Same with anything to do with mathematics.
The problem is, that, I guess, a game dev degree cannot possibly give you absolute proficiency in all aspects of game design. IMO, that's just impossible. It's a medium, that combines so many different media and skills, including art and music for crying out loud, that there's no way to nail it all on your own.
There are of course topics like level design or game feel that are more specific to game dev, but at the same time, it isn't magic. There's a metric ton of educational content on the internet for that, including GDC talks, where the "big boys" explain how it works, maybe even better than your local game dev professor. Additionally, you can also analyze games you like and borrow their mechanics or whatever. That's basically how games evolved since forever.
If developing solo, you need to focus on your strengths or find someone to complement you in a small studio. Large studios on the other hand don't even need generalists to begin with. They like specialized artists and programmers.
As far as I see it, a CS degree is an excellent prequisite for game design. If you managed to study that to the end, well, navigating an engine will be a walk in the park for you. Only problem might be art, but in the end, you can make anyhing work as long as the core gameplay is fun enough.
Although we live in a time heavily saturated with media and games and such, I strongly believe, that the medium is not "solved" at all. In my view, games still have enormous potential for artistic, or plain human, expression. For me, it is the pinnacle of media, the medium to end all media. And I want to be a part of it.
Same as you. Now is the right time to get into game dev. Don't fret!

It's kinda cool to see that steamdeck is a good platform to target. Even though you guys separeted linux from steamdeck (I got the point you guys were talking about proton/native). They are in fact literally the same. I'm a Linux gamer for the last 5 years and I normally prefer to run games through proton rather than native even when the game has a native version, because it's always easier to run and normally has better support than native. I actually normally talk to developers to target proton and not native, that way linux will always have the most updated version of the game and is the same binary than windows so it is necessarily the same game (no linux specific bugs, if there is any it's a proton bug 99% of the time will be easily fixed in an upcoming proton update).

Mobile is the platform that generate the most revenue also easy to develop and monetize with ads. But it is the hardest platform to success on it, the only way to do it is with a publisher like voodoo or any other knows mobile publishers, other than that your game will be a drop of water in the ocean.

I would say VR is A tier, there is almost no AAA competitors there. So you compete with mostly other indies and small companies. By becoming early adopter of VR you can become AAA studio in 5-10 years when VR blows up (it is matter of time really).

Honestly Mac is steadily growing on Steam (albeit slowly), and Apple has shown to be decently committed to gaming support on mac, with M2 chips having support for UE Nanite and M3 having support for HW accelerated Raytracing. Mac being UNIX based is a really comfortable platform to develop on, so developing on mac is a really good idea, as you can do the usual Windows build and get an extra growing install base on your games too. I've been making hobby projects myself on a mac and I can build for Windows and Mac and don't really encounter any bugs that only occur in one of both platforms. I don't test on Linux, but Linux isn't really growing on gaming and tools like Proton already do the job for that.

Everyone have smartphone right now and few have time to use PC...most of the time people spend on playing mobile phone...so start with Mobile if you're serious..yeah theres alot of competition but alots of casual game..if you make really good game you might stand out..because theres alot of attention and fanbase for it

Honestly, I think you approached this list wrong. A platform is how you purchase the game, NOT how you play it. Which you even touched on, by joking that Steam Deck & Windows are the same.
A Windows game sold on Steam will have different impact than the same exact game in the Windows Store / Game Pass. The process of getting it listed and promoted also changes. This is what I want to know.
What you covered is pretty obvious information really. A good tier list ranks stuff that is super opinionated OR somewhat unclear to the viewer. This list accomplished neither.
