THIS is how assisting should be for both the assistant and the stylist 🙌🙌🙌 Im jealous of how much hands on training you're getting everyday! I wish my assistantship could have been more personal! Great job both if you!!
Its nice to hear a stylist giving praise to a junior / assistant, it's such an important confidence boost for them. Back when i was a junior it was often hard to know if you had done a good job as the stylist was always too busy to comment on my work. Keep it up!!
Steve Forbes I know this comment is old, but I’ve never seen relationships like this in a salon with assistants. I was and they were always treated like the maid or something. So nice to see things are different now and hopefully changing. Not sure, I’m in California and it’s been a while since I’ve done hair. This was amazing.
I’m about to start assisting at a natural hair salon & my husband doesn’t understand why I’m choosing to assist first. Like you I feel I have more I could learn. 🙂 thxs for this video.
I love this! As an assistant myself I love how you don’t forgot to thank her. A lot of stylist forget how much we actually do and it means a lot that you give us that recognition!! 😍😍😍 I’m jealous She’s already taking her own clients!! I need to step up. Lol. I’ve been assisting for 2.5 years.
You should apply somewhere else🤔 especially if you're licensed or maybe save up for some classes or utilize youtube education and hey maybe the chain salons will be a great start give it a few years but not a few years assisting if you want you're own chair! you need to learn from your mistakes and see what you're capable of :) best of luck!
I think people who aren’t in the industry don’t realize how amazing of an opportunity this is. Yes Caitlyn (sp?) may not be rolling in money for these 6 months - a year that she’s assisting but the amount of knowledge and opportunity she’s gaining is worth so much more than any price tag. Most hair stylist coming out of school would KILL for this opportunity! Caitlyn just has to stick it out for this short amount of time and then her chances of succeeding with her own clients sky rockets! Also remember, Jessie only does hair 1 day a week. So I’m guessing Caitlyn is able to build her own clientele those other days.
I find this topic super tricky and I clearly need advice on it.So wonderful to have an assistant but we have to remember that the client has waited patiently to get booked with you. They are assuming YOU are going to do the majority of work on their head.If the asistant is doing most of the consultaion, colour application, the toning at the bowl, and the finished blowout/styling, how can the client say they had their hair done by you the requested stylist when they barely saw you, not even for the final checkout at the til? I understand assistants helping with removing extensions, re-taping them, and prepping them for being re-applied and being the extra hands that we need when foiling/colouring/detangling etc but I just don't know if I feel comfortable charging my regular quoted price if the assistant is doing pretty much everything I would do in order for me to double book myself. I have seen a former boss/salon owner lose at least 50% of his clientele due to this reason. When asked, the clients said that they had waited sometimes 3-4 months to get in with him, only for him to pop over the assistant's shoulder once or twice for a quick hi and to make sure the assistant was doing what he asked. They're paying his full price but not really having his hands in their head!We all know how darn hard we work to keep our clients, I'm petrified of losing people. But this system seems to be working beautifully for you Jessi😍Am I just really, really off on this one? Need advice
I sure hope I didn't sound like a negative jerk!😟 I just would like to know how other stylists do it out there. In previous salon, we called it "shop help".The shop helper (2 or 3 worked in the shop and each stylist that wanted to use them paid them tips/their wage. If you wanted the help, you had to pay for it😂) Some stylists did not use them, the busier stylists used their help quite often. They would prep our client at the bowl(shampoo/head massage/toning later on if it was colour/foils etc if the stylist could not, pass stylists foils, hold sections of hair if needed)but us stylists greeted the client, and after they were shampooed,we would come escort them to our chair and continue with full services until they were finished, walked them to the til and we thanked them to complete the appt as the receptionist cashed them out.So our assistants really just did assist in those little extra areas that were needed.Seems like now, clients are basically seeing these qualified junior stylists for the whole appt.Nothing wrong with this at all but they're not getting done by the requested stylist. I guess that's just how it's done now?maybe I'm just really out if touch😂😂😂
This is something i agree with too! And something i was so scared about when i first hired an assistant! I will say there’s a right and a wrong way to do it. I know of salons that will have so many assistants and the stylist has the assistant do 90% of the work. That’s not the way i do it! I always make sure i do the actual technique so the client gets what they are paying for and have a good experience! Sometimes my assistant will follow my foils with a paint between or teased out ends but i only have them do that if it’s a repeat client and they have seen my assistant multiple times before that! I tone a lot myself but if I’m double booked i have her do it but i always come over and explain to the client what we are doing so they are involved! I don’t take new clients anymore so my clients have been with me for years with assistants and are used to how i do it now so that also helps!:) but i totally agree, assistants should never be doing everything!
I totally see your view point but being a hair stylist and once an assistant when you work under a very detailed stylist that is OPEN about showing you their techniques , formulations and patterns (as a stylist should) you learn their SPECIFIC ways and are taught them properly that way the only way you know how to work is THEIR way. Jessi I guarantee has great leadership skills and have shown her assistant HER ways that way the clients get what they came in for... a great leader isn’t afraid to teach someone else and that they should become even greater then themselves :) it’s all about spreading knowledge
I’m an assistant right now and I pretty much do the same things and I think it’s going to benefit me so much in the future, one of the best decisions I’ve made since I started hair school! ❤️❤️
I’ve been out of school for about 6 months now. I was a receptionist at the salon I work at the last few months I was in school but the second I got my license it was go go go! I went to a Paul Mitchell school so I only worked with their line. 6 months later and there are still things I’m not confident with, especially working with a different color line. I know they say your 1st year in the salon is where you learn the most, but I still wish I could have assisted for a while before taking on my own clients to build my confidence!
Christina LaRocque I’ve been working for 2 years now. I felt after school I didn’t know jack shit really. It was really important to me to find a salon that has an assisting program. Careful of places that will promise to train you cause I’ve heard horror stories of you basically being a maid. At my salon we train for 6-12 months. We do classes on models and then have days that we assist our mentors on the floor. Goodluck!!
Thanks for this video, I found it very helpful to see what other assistants do. Just a question, when you have an assistant who helps and also does a lot of the work too how do you split tips? Or does the client tip you both? Just curious
Is this an American thing!?!? In Canada you have to do real world 2000 apprenticeship hours to get your license to “fuck with someone’s personal image”! Call me naïve but I still thought you had to get REAL WORLD (yes a reference to the show to any tiktok’rs who don’t even know what it was) that’s insane you could go into a salon and have some rookie who’s “licensed” but not “learned” anything about real world reality! Good on you babes! That’s awesome and incredible to see someone smart enough to know the difference between licensed and confident!
Jessi - JZ Styles awesome to hear your assistants are growing especially within... of course that how it should be I’m guessing I’m still on school and so excited to get out and make magic happen... well within our wonderful limitations but still i Love your chemistry with your assistant and it seems like she is loving her opportunity.... you guys are killing it keep the content coming ❤️❤️

pro tip : you can watch series on flixzone. Been using it for watching loads of movies during the lockdown.
@Fletcher Enrique Definitely, I have been using Flixzone for since december myself :)

“Aveda is different than the real world”. - Lol. I agree. 🤣

I hope your assistant gets tipped too! She’s so helpful. I would love having an assistant while being the chair
Lexuz Salinas sometimes my clients do tip her! Yes it’s great!!
I’m an assistant right now and I pretty much do the same things and I think it’s going to benefit me so much in the future, one of the best decisions I’ve made since I started hair school! ❤️❤️

What happened to your other assistant?
Does your assistant every assist other stylists in the salon? If so, do they tip or pay a set amount for helping?
You do a lot as an assistant.
