2:18 this game looks fantastic! Somehow I feel if banjo and Mario 64 had a baby it would be this. Can’t wait
id love to try it out but i cant fins this one anywhere
Yeah looks nice is that an otter character? Reminds me of banjo mixed with ko kangaroo really like the character design and grapple mechanic- I really love that loads of promising 3d platformer games are still being made
Good for him, but I'll admit I'm sad about it. The project looked so polished already!@@loganmcglynn9950
Cooool. Untitled looks awesome. I wouldnt even know how to make that yoyo mechanic thing. I cant wait for that one
Also known as Just Ringin' It.
Heads up everyone: so it turns out development on Captain's Tail is halted, and Biting Mascot is no longer together. It seems to have been like that for about a year now. I'll have more news on this soon, so stay tuned. Sad though, I absolutely loved the demo.
Ok
Thank you for this video. I've been kind of starved for 3D Platformers and a lot of these look amazing. I never would have heard of them otherwise
Really interesting and quite in depth video! As a solo dev making a 3D platformer it's really nice to see that there are so many people working on this genre too!
Yeah. I can't imagine how difficult it must be to make this kind of game by yourself. Really incredible how people are able to pull that off, and keep working at it too.
Nice to see that these indie 3D Platformers are getting more attention.
I was worried that the hype for this genre might have gone down a bit after 2017.
Also you missed Onirism, Floppy and the Sleepy Planet, Nytro and Hobo Cat Adventures.
Thank you so much for this video. I love platformers and now I follow a lot of this projects thanks to you.
Wow great video!! I was just looking to see if happy hell had any updates and came across your video. I hadn't heard of most of these. 3d platformers 4 lyfe!!!
Good to hear! The more people who know about these games, the better they do, and the better the genre does!
Well I do love a good 3D platformer and it's great to see some promising ones emerging on the indie scene!
Hat in Time was amazing and I actually liked Yooka Laylee, so I guess we can agree to disagree on that one, but great video, great commentary and sense of humour and most importantly a great overview of some good looking 3D Platformers.
I was drawn in by Clive and Wrench, I am looking at covering that game on one of my channels, but can't decide which, as it's both indie yet retro related....maybe I can somehow cover it on both?!?!
Keep up the good work, you gained two subs my friend. . .One from me!!
And one from me....again!!! 😉
Thank you very much! I'd love to do a video on Yooka-Laylee, but I already did for my old channel Cliqist if you want to check that out.
Bu why not cover Clive N Wrench on both your channels lol
Hey everyone, I've got a follow-up video out now, looking at 8 MORE upcoming indie 3D platformers! If you liked this video, I recommend taking a look at it! There's also a follow-up in the comments about what happened to the games featured in this video. ruclips.net/video/Wta3zmMf578/видео.html
Triple Eye - Indie Gaming I want game like this but with 4K graphics if you know post names please thank you
Can you recommend any CURRENT indie 3D Platformers. Dig deep- I've tried EVERYTHING. LOL
Literally the day before this video went live, I found this cool looking 3D platformer demo called Pumpkin Jack that was just published on Itch.io. Consider it an honorable mention, and you can bet it'll be in my Indie Games You Missed June 2019 video next month.
Looks pretty decent!
Pumpkin Jack is amazing
The art direction for Just Ringing it looks really good. Kind of wish the Crash N Sane Trilogy went for something like that, instead of the weird cartoonish designs mixed with semi realistic textures and lighting look it had. It just ended up looking really off compared to the original ps1 games which had a more of a “hand drawn cartoon in 3D” look.
I think the graphics look fateful to the originals
To be honest with you, my favorite from your list is the number 10. Damn it looks good
For the axolot fruit bat game:
If Tough controls are like hard camera angles in old 3d platformers IMO, then it makes the game better because it's more challenging. You'll get used to it. The world needs more games that level you up by your skill rather than a number
I also love 3d platform games, but not what to play, so I decided to make my own. If it's interesting on my channel there is gameplay).
Maybe an underrated opinion here but I hate platforming characters that don’t feel like they have any weight to them. Characters that show Earth-like accelerations of gravity affecting their movement feel more NATURAL but, to really make a platformer enjoyable from that point, one must make reasonable enhancements so that you feel SUPERNATURAL. A richly satisfying feeling to the player that ideally never gets stale/boring, is intuitive yet feature-filled, synergizes with all of the rest of the game mechanically, and more. Movement & its related mechanics are more important to a pure platformer(not mixed w other genres or negligibly so) than story, sound, visuals & UI+UX, gameplay systems, etc. believe it or not and so if there’s one thing to master 1st for your game before asking for easy crowdfunding support(no offense) or by other means, it’s that-a working camera as well as move sets & animation that ooze personality, style, and flow... again, just an opinion
Zera: Myths Awaken, Rad and Billie Bust Up feel positively inspired. And I can't wait for Clive N' Wrench in the coming months!
02:05 any name the project has gotten yet? A wall jump and this game has the potential to be one of the best 3D platformers in a looooong time it looks like. Super interested in it.
Ok that otter one looks fantastic.
You should look into Ink Rose's indie 3d platformer! It's in early development and looks awesome.
Clive n wrench is now released! I look forward to getting it soon been following it for a while
Any news on untitled one?
zeera's music is boppin
I really want "Untitled" , it looks really amazing. Hopefully more information comes out soon
Yeah I love the character design and it’s so clever using the life ring for more than just a grapple
I think the movement controls from Zera: Myths Awaken stems from tricks that Spyro speedrunners use. Essentially, it's just Spyro on hard mode.
Billie Bust-Up is super cute looking.
7:30 phew, I was wondering if I was the only one who wasn't very fond of these controls either. Maybe it's a matter of getting good, but I don't think I need to get a degree on how to do the common basic jumps I'll need to do for the entire game.
Another Update for Billie Bust Up: They're having voice actors from Hazbin Hotel
What platforms comes The 1st Game & how i found more info about the game?
WOW, Zera :Myth Awaken, i need play
Why the graphics is weak I want higher graphics 3D platform which game you advice me ?
What is the game with the car on 1:15?
3:55 There are many great 3D Sonic games.
@@JustSomeCritic7777 Let's not forget "Sonic Unleashed", which honestly not a bad game at all despite the Werehog gimmick, but it's still better than the F.L.U.D.D. from "Super Mario Sunshine". ;)
@@sonicmario64 I think a lot of people just didn't care to upgrade the werehog
@@gabrielt4305 I guess you can say it's their loss for not understanding why some people such as myself are able to enjoy the game in the first place. ;P
@@sonicmario64 It's a great game. One of my top 15 or 20 for sure I think
Yoo people, I saw a game some time ago on twitter and I can't recall the name but I'm desperately looking for it. What I can recall it's a 3D platformer action adventure like "Sonic Adventures", but with a girl with some special boots, but I'm not certain. There was a lot of puzzles and she could curl like a ball I think. The game was amazingly polished and I can't see if it launched or not. Sounds familiar?
Nice video, but the constant hate for Sonic and Yooka Laylee is annoying. Sonic has great 3D games, and Yooka was a good/decent 3D platformer.
E123OmegaShow Thank you! 🙏
Everyone's entitled to their opinions, but to me, Yooka-Laylee is the prime example of a 3D platformer doing everything wrong. Poor camera, bad physics, terrible story, awful mini-games, bad controls. Maybe the updates over the years have improved it, but when I played it, it was the worst 3D platformer I've ever played.
@@TripleEye_Josh Well, at least "Yooka-Laylee" is a new game with animal protagonists that aren't lame and unmemorable (with examples of such characters being Bubsy The Bobcat and Awesome Possum), especially if Sonic is pretty much the only animal character in modern video games nowadays, and I've personally gotten rather bored with seeing human protagonists in platformers such as "A Hat In Time".
Eh i think collectathons are not as fun as people tend to pretend they are.
Project Longtail having the word "Project" in the title probably just means it's a placeholder title.
The way you say corgi is hilarious.
Zera: The controls aren't actually bad, just unintuitive. If there was a tutorial (which the final product will obviously have), there'd be few issues.
Diego Ras is from Brasil!
0:32 is that the cod parody?
You either thought too much, or too little. Shooters are a very old reason, "cinematic over the shoulder walking simulators" are the hot new thing.
Walking Simulators are pretty good.
For anyone watching today who was particularly fond of the first otter game, you'll be sad to know that it's no longer in development and the creator isn't planning to continue (source: patreon posts) as of the beginning of 2022. That said, he has been working on some other projects including another 3D platformer that's in very early stages and he plans to release a basic proof of concept soon!!
Really unfortunate about the otter game though, it looked incredible and I really hope he picks it back up some day or that we'll get to see mechanics from it transposed into his new projects because his twitter only scratches the surface of what he accomplished in terms of a fleshed out movement and combat mechanics
What a shame 🙁 I loved that character design but I’m glad they are making another 3d platformer instead they clearly have great ideas I hope it is somewhat similar to that first game
The maker of Zera listens to fan feedback
Untitled sembra davvero bellissimo, sembra banjo, e clive wrench che esce a dicembre su switc. Qualcuno sa se percaso esce su console? Bellissimo video complimenti. Siete stati bravi. Saluti dall italia
I want 3d platformers to return to ps4 and 5
rad was at sonic sage
huh i thought yooka laylee was great
I’m really looking forward to Happy Hell!
Yooka Laylee was great, what you on about?
Playtonic said they're working on several games in the YL universe. Maybe a second 3D platformer is among them?
Cool
You spelt mentions wrong.. there's no second "e"
Can someone please tell me what the game is @ 00:51 ?
XCVII that is Flynn and freckles I believe
The Runaway Kid Thanks legend! Just looked interesting
XCVII no problem! I’ve saved it to my watch list on my PS4 3D platformers are one of favourite game genres and I am very excited for crash 4 in October and Clive n wrench
Top 10 upcoming 3d platformers I won't afford
3D Platformers are the best genre, yet my favourite game of all time is either Halo 3 or WoW
Круто 👍
Yooka Laylee was actually a pretty good game lol
=D
its not that its a good game its just that its so charming its the best style a 3d platformer can take it just saves the game for its bad gameplay and i like it to =)
@@KGLWFanatic I mean, if you've played it (I'm assuming you have based off of that bold review) then you would know how FUN it is. It's so great to be able to use the duo's different abilities and movement combinations to take out enemies and travers the worlds! If you're talking about "Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair"
then yeah, they basically took a GOLDEN game and ruined it. The whole thing that makes the game appealing is being able to move around in three dimensions and The Impossible Lair ruined that.
Yooka-Laylee really does bring out the feels of a Banjo Kazooie predecessor with a animal duo and the move set. Rare really knew what they were doing with that game and it really does show that even the smallest group of devs that split off from a bigger group can create something this beautiful.
Me being a dev myself, I know that Yooka-Laylee really does use the principles of good game design to it's advantage all the way. They made so many sales off of that game and are basically swimming in money right now. Playtonic really knows what they're doing.
But for you to vaguely say that it's not a good game is really odd in my opinion considering the amount of money they made off of it alone. The fan base of the game is also incredible as well. just look how much money they made from the games Kickstarter alone! ($1,429,068,4.28).
Yooka-Laylee is a good game
wow
Are are you a game dev and if yes are you making a game?
@@KGLWFanatic Yes, I am making a game
Why does this seem like a video cliqist made. Are u the same guy?
Yup
I'm getting a little tired of these simply art styles. There's a few too many and most 3D platformers seem to go this way.
Rayman 2 and 3 had drawn textures with more shading and balance of light and dark to set the mood.
They're all cartoony but I'd like a more subtle approach like Sly Cooper and Psychonauts that are cartoony but that's it. They have characters with expressions and emotions with a very low key but living world. It's not all happy and shiny. Even Rayman 1 in Dream Forest was dark and soothing due to the tall trees giving shade.
A little hand drawn shadows and shapes would really help the rather bland and stale colors. They feel like flat materials you click and drag from the engine's basic assets.
haha 3 years later and billie bust up is still pre-alpha
Yooka Laylee is not a trainwreck, lol. Yes, it has its flaws for sure, especially related to bafflingly bad game design for Hurdle Hijinx and Kartos Karting, but despite them I've had a blast playing through it. Yooka Laylee has given me lots of feelings of nostalgia, and that same sense of joy I had playing 3D platformers from the late 90s. This is why Yooka Laylees reception was mixed. Some really like it, while others thought it was just meh.
*64 Likes* lol
You can’t buy it on switch
Yooka-Laylee being bad is quite a hot-take.
so many of these games look like they were designed by (and for) furries (particularly untitled, longtail, billie bustup, captains tail), which completely turns me off the game.
you can still have a cartoony game with animal characters, without them being super anthropomorphized or cutesy, where the animals actually look like animals (banjo-kazooie, donkey kong), rather than some creepily off-putting human-animal hybrid.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
my second problem with many of these games is the level design; many of the environments are either really bland and/or generic with no interesting set pieces, or look like obstacle courses rather than organic worlds that could believably exist. (i understand that many of these games are early in development, so this will hopefully improve)
the best example of this are the floating spike platforms in captain's trail. magically floating platforms in general are lazy game design, and make the game feel more like an obstacle course that was designed by some game developer, rather than a convincing, believable world with platforms that feel like they exist for a reason (banjo-kazooie really nailed this).
Billie Bust Up Director here, none of us on the team are furries haha, not that we have a problem with them! But all of our character design are intended to be more similar to their animal form and avoid human features all together. Basically animals standing on two legs! We don’t add hips, or curves, or breasts to any characters. Although this footage is very old now and Billie no longer looks like this, she was weirdly curvy before, but I wasn’t very good at 3D character modelling when we first started
I agree on the level design but that’s just my personal preference for game’s to have logic behind its environment. Other game devs may decide to put gameplay over the design. Depends what experience you’re going for. Our footage was just a testing map so it was naturally very empty and lacking a theme
@@Kitmit13 thanks for the reply!
I'm glad to hear that you guys are taking a more animalistic approach to your character design, rather than anthropomorphic ones. i grew up playing 3D platformers such as banjo-kazooie, donkey kong 64, etc. and i never felt off-put by any those characters the way i do about some of these games. (well, maybe with the exception of Candy Kong lol, but it was done in a comedically self-aware kind of way)
with regard to the level design, i feel strongly that a game that emphasizes exploration (a hallmark of all the best 3D platformers) really needs believable worlds that make the player *want* to see what's around every corner.
looking at Yooka-Laylee, the level design fell a bit flat with worlds that didn't have that same organic believability as the worlds in Banjo-Kazooie. without any rhyme or reason to the level design, the worlds just weren't as fun or interesting to explore, because you never get that same sense of wonder/curiosity with a world that feels like it was designed by some guy at a game studio. i hope that all makes sense!
Chris Doil yea! I agree totally, that’s the best part of any 3D platformer, I’d say Sly Raccoon was always my favourite, the level design always worked so well with the environment around it, you feel like you exist inside that world space and the universe around you is alive and breathing. I think for Yooka Layee the levels were just too large and empty, whilst Banjo had lots of smaller worlds to make it feel more dense and populated and full of life.
git gud scrub
Most platformers are boys or man characters. Why not make mlre girl characters. I missed that as a child. I loved all platformers... but no girls... wtf
I realized that recently too. I think A Hat in Time, Demon Turf, and Skylar and Plux feature female main characters, but they are still pretty sparse overall. It would be nice to see more characters like me.
