  • Golden Kamuy just got a 4th anime season! But why is no one talking about it? Here are 3 reasons

imo the wonderful thing about GK is that the tone shifts occur. it's more like real life. the characters have experienced terrible things and are largely traumatized people. yet, they're humans, and laugh a lot. GK is not for everyone, but I see it as a beautiful piece of art fitting a niche (I guess?) audience.

Its because most anime fans lack the maturity to appreciate a show that isnt about a bland teenage protagonist being isekaid to another world where he's OP.
They don't want art. They want power fantasies and self-insert protags.

The main reasons why GK isn’t as popular as other anime is because it’s not something your generic anime fan would watch.
It’s not Isekai, its cast is mostly made of men and it’s not a shonen.
When you said “idk for who this anime was made for” the answer is for anyone who wants to see something different for once. Anyone who loves to explore the journey the characters go through while trying to reach their goal. Anyone who enjoys to see the goofy side of characters who can get serious in other situations.
A story can fit in many topics and moods if the author is able to blend them and Noda managed to create something that i and many GK fans appreciated.
It’s sad to see how many people gave up on this show just because of bad CGI and the fact that even Crunchyroll does a very bad job advertising it is another reason why it’s not that popular.

Golden Kamuy lacks popularity in the West because everyone dropped the anime because of the CGI bear which imo is a stupid reason to drop the anime and then the rest of it was poorly advertised... i dont think it has anything to do with pacing or the the themes and while I do agree that it would be really cool to see more Ainu women and the nature stuff you brought up, I think saying GK has "nothing to talk about" is a wild take, because there is a Golden Kamuy fanbase and we never shut up! lol XD I could talk forever about the multiple themes that are explored and the development and trials of its characters that go very deep, its a masterpiece of a work, truly. @@Ghall2708 Sorry for the late commment. The pacing is slow at the beginning and you could argue that nothing is going on ,but it does a lot for the series as a whole: the character introductions, world building, set up etc. pay off big time when you get past that. I think that one of the reasons Golden Kamuy is not that popular is mainly due to the missing cultural context: being set in a historical period that it's not Sengoku jidai or any other world-famous Japanese era, most foreigners don't have enough knowledge about pre-WWI to understand the plot beats and the references, I think

I honestly love Golden Kamuy for all the elements that it blends together, like... you ask at one point who this show was made for? it was made for me. I am the target audience. I love chaos, and this is a 10/10 fit for me personally. but you also mentioned feeling the absence of analysis on anime youtube, and I wrote this up for the comments section of another video, so I thought it'd be cool to share around:
I think one of my favorite things about the show is how food is used to create thematic cohesion across the narrative, by indicating a person's place and context.
for example, in the first scene of the first episode of Golden Kamuy, Sugimoto is shown in the trenches. he eats an ant, then spits it out, commenting that it tastes sour. he's hungry... starving even. but he claims that he'll take a bite out of an enemy soldier before he lets himself die here. his place and context are simply: war.
this is why Sugimoto conceptualizes himself as someone damned in the early parts of the show... he compares himself to the wenkamuy when Asirpa describes how animals become evil when they kill and eat humans. he says he never wanted to kill people the way he did, but he can't deny how war seeped into every facet of him, and warped his persona into something unrecognizable to himself... and yet, this "evil" part of him was something functional, that managed to keep him alive. what could he have been, if not that?
to me, it feels like all of the soldiers in Golden Kamuy are different people in the context of war vs. civilian life... I would describe it as their civilian identities getting cast aside during the war, because war has no use for them as people. they go out on the battlefield along with so many others, all identical in their utility, none worth defining in any other way. to do so would be to hope that they'd come back. if you have an animal that you intend to slaughter... the last thing you'd want to do is name it.
and what happens when they do come back? it's almost as though they weren't really supposed to. their old lives don't fit anymore, and they can't step back into them. and for a lot of these men, they look back to some earlier point in their life, searching for what to do with themselves. they look back to when making connections with other people seemed attainable and valuable to them. what did they used to do, back when they behaved like they were human?
when Asirpa and Sugimoto begin cooking together, Asirpa isn't just feeding his physical body... she's feeding him a new sense of place and context. her culture isn't familiar to him, so she has a perfect excuse to teach him how to live as a civilian again, on even the most basic levels, from the foundation on up. this is the exact kind of gentle re-integration Sugimoto needs... it's what all the soldiers are searching for on some level. Asirpa steps up to fill the void where support for these men should ideally be...
but so does Tsurumi. and while Asirpa focuses on using food and culture to allow these men to begin healing from the way war contextualized them... Tsurumi focuses on their unique traumas. he admires their trauma, emphasizes and elevates it, and convinces them that there's no other way for them to exist. they _should_ exist this way. and yet, nobody else could accept them as they are... nobody but him. he traps them there, and convinces them that he's the only one who understands. he replaces the idea of community in their mind, with this cult-like fanaticism that only he will continue to perpetuate.
it is then significant to remember his conversation with Arisaka... about how, if there is a war, Arisaka will be successful in his arms dealing business. and, likewise, if many people are injured, Tsurumi will likely be successful at the production of narcotic drugs, such as morphine and opium, if he can get his poppies to grow. and after this conversation, he and Arisaka go to visit Nikaido in the hospital... Nikaido, who is now massively addicted to morphine. once again, we have a consumption based indicator of place and context. and on top of that, Nikaido is newly missing his leg because of the violence he's committed and endured thus far, and Tsurumi has Arisaka gift Nikaido a prosthetic with a gun in it, so he can be enabled to do it again. you get a man hooked on the cycle of violence by giving him an addictive balm for the pain whenever it knocks him down, and a new weapon to fight with every time he gets back up.
this is how the show sets up Asirpa and Tsurumi as foils... they still haven't even met in the anime yet, but you can feel how completely opposite they are in the same role.
I also love the way that Asirpa and Sugimoto's animal affiliations come into play... wherein Sugimoto is a deer, and Asirpa is a wolf. to me, Sugimoto seems like if you took the instincts of a prey animal (to lash out defensively for the sake of his self preservation) and used them viciously by necessity. and Asirpa is like if you took the instincts of a predator (to live within the ecosystem by hunting and providing for her pack/community) and used them constructively by choice. and Asirpa has problems killing people because she sees them as thinking, feeling, intellectual equals, while Sugimoto has problems killing animals because they've done nothing wrong, and can't even be applied to the concept of deserving it. I find it interesting that Asirpa is able to mend Sugimoto's fear of being hunted by instilling in him the sense of safety that comes from being a valued part of her community.
looking at a few other specific food examples... it's notable that, in Tanigaki's backstory, the beginning point of his tale is defined by the kane mochi he uses to save himself and his friend. and after embarking on his whole revenge quest... after leaving for the war, grieving his sister, losing his mother, and trying to live for violence... it all comes back to the kane mochi, and the specific element of care that only Tanigaki adds, which makes him identifiable, more than anything else. it doesn't matter what he's done... this is still what defines him. sharing kane mochi is contextualized by care. it's literally the last thing you have to give, and is meant to act as a lifeline, and it doesn't matter that Tanigaki is in the midst of war... his kane mochi is still why his friend knows who he is.
meanwhile, for Ogata... his mother making monkfish stew over and over again means that her mind is far from him. if she were paying attention, she'd know that he hates this, and she'd see his efforts to change it. but her place and context are not with him. she may physically be there, but she hasn't truly shown him care in a long, long time. by the time he kills her, I'm pretty sure he knew, in no uncertain terms, that she was already gone, and was never coming back.
food is literally such an important theme that helps weave the tapestry of interconnected influences in this show. each use of it says a new and interesting thing about the place and context of each character.

    • @kamuyking551
      @kamuyking551 Год назад +17

also, I just love Ogata. he's such a total shithead, but his character is fascinating. I think my favorite thing about him is that he's great at his specific area of expertise, but he's really bad at people. and it makes sense, given his hangups.
basically, in terms of Ogata's psychology... Ogata believes that other people secretly all think just like him deep down. and if anyone is acting like a pure, innocent, or good person, they must be lying. the funny thing is... "pure" characters like Asirpa and Yuusaku behave like good people with such predictable consistency, that Ogata has no choice but to raise his gun to each of them, respectively, when he fails to corrupt them. his ideology isn't tempting to them. meanwhile, Ogata claims to feel no guilt over anything he's done... and yet, he keeps hallucinating Yuusaku bleeding from the head, which suggests otherwise. it feels more like Ogata is the one trying to repress his guilt, and it still won't go away. so if anyone is lying to themselves about the true nature of their own feelings, it's Ogata.
so, given the backwards way Ogata sees other people's perspectives, as well as his own, it makes total sense that he's bad a manipulating people. he's good at lying... he's been lying to himself for a long time now. but he's really really bad at anticipating what actually motivates people, or what they really want to hear. he's fine as long as he's like, 100 yards away with a gun, all safely detached... but the instant you put him up close and personal with other people, and ask him to function socially, he's completely out of his element.
and I also think its significant that, as he watches Asirpa, he sees someone who parallels Yuusaku. and when Asirpa reaches out to Sugimoto, Sugimoto wholeheartedly accepts. Sugimoto feels better the longer he spends with Asirpa, because she reminds him of who he used to be. the thing is... Yuusaku also reminded Ogata of how he lived before he became a soldier. and it only made him more bitter, angry, spiteful, and likely to reject Yuusaku, because of the disparity in their quality of life. so when Ogata watches Asirpa and Sugimoto, he's basically seeing what he could've had. if he had actually accepted Yuusaku... if he hadn't shot his brother. the brother who never got corrupted... who Ogata couldn't prove was impure. and I believe that played a part in Ogata's urge to destroy what he saw in Asirpa. if what Asirpa is doing actually works, then Ogata must've been wrong this whole time. and also, how dare someone have these blessings, and leave him on the outside looking in, all over again.
it is legitimately fascinating the way this man's psychology works. and it's also amazing how all these parallel and foil relationships track across the entire story. I was particularly fond of the part at the very end of season 2, after the finale, where Heiji Koito says that he's sending his son on a journey where he knows his boy may die, because Heiji Koito is a leader of men. parents send their children to die under his command all the time... if he held his own child back, how could he possibly call that fair? he uses this as a way to explain why Wilk might've been training Asirpa to be someone who could lead a cultural revolution... and why that might've been a sympathetic thing to do. but in actuality, it kind of begs the question... isn't it just kind of awful that _nobody_ can save their children? isn't it a horrible practice, to send people en masse into something this damaging, over and over again? to make war a legacy that falls on the shoulders of your children and propagates forward through the generations? it really gets to the core question plaguing Asirpa. is war and violence the correct tool for the preservation and restoration of a culture? because it certainly isn't the correct tool for the preservation and restoration of individual people. that's where the veterans of this show were damaged in the first place, and Sugimoto is coming to understand how much he wants to protect Asirpa from the things that harmed him so deeply. and this also feels like an extension of the divide in Asirpa and Tsurumi's diametrically opposed mentalities.
I think one of my favorite things about Golden Kamuy is that the absurdity all pulls double duty and serves a story function. a lot of these men behave in goofy, juvenile ways because they set their identities in a kind of stasis while they were at war. they're trying to go back to living as civilians, but they haven't done the proper social growing and maturing in all the time that elapsed. they're literally stunted. or like, that whole hilarious scene with Tsurumi and Arisaka visiting Nikaido in the hospital? it's absolute batshit insanity, but it also sets up the whole metaphor between Tsurumi, and the addictive substance that is morphine. or, put another way, Tsurumi is synonymous with the cycle of war, trauma, and addiction to the affection that soothes the damages sustained during that time, which keeps the cycle repeating. or the otter meat scene? at that point in time, Inkarmat and Asirpa are on a boat talking about who in the group might not be trustworthy, and Inkarmat names Kiroranke as a potential bad actor. and where is Kiroranke? why, he's with the rest of their unsuspecting party members! regardless of whatever ridiculous shit is going on at the same time... that's still a problem!
literally, it feels like this show can meander as much as it wants. I'm all in. I know that shit is gonna come back and be relevant somehow. and also, I think the two sides of the show's tone are complementary... not at odds. if the show is about how war robs people of their humanity, and what it takes to build that back, then it deserves to have the full range of human experience to mess around with. the parts of the story where the characters are at war are somber and stoic, in sharp contrast with the kinds of silly, happy, people they can be under positive living conditions. this is their humanity on display. and sometimes it looks fucked up, because the trauma these people have faced actively fucked them up... whether that be war, prison, or just mental illness. the show is interested in whether these people can still access joy, even when the pursuit of their goals keeps setting them against new threats, and especially when those threats turn out to be people who are just as messed up, and yet, just as human as anyone else we've met.

It's definitely an anomaly of a show, watching it feels like we don't deserve anime like this. The story is set in a heavily researched historical setting, with real traditions, religions, cultures and much more constantly being presented. The environments always change, the characters don't sit around, they move constantly and it just feels like an insane amount of effort to actually draw all the houses and outfits and such, compared to generic fantasy stuff or things set in a school, or city.
The show answers the question why people are drawn to the animation medium IMO, because adapting a story like this in film would just be too damn hard and expensive, and would not be as realistic feeling. The author takes full advantage of this, and I get why people respect this show. I generally learn things or at least I feel like I am learning things, while also having really good fights and mystery behind it.
Anyway, 4 season is now continuing and we have about 19 episodes to go until the manga is fully adapted and finished. This is the type of show that I think I will buy a Blu-ray collection of and put on my shelf, and I have never done this before. Just because I want to come back for that atmosphere and unique feeling.

I feel mean saying this but I truly don't... get this video. Because literally all the things you pointed out are what make me *appreciate* Golden Kamuy as a series. And i do want to start with the very fact of saying Golden Kamuy isn't popular.... when it really really is. No, it didn't take off very well in the west, but in Japan? It's insanely popular, literally a twice award winning manga with an anime on its fourth season. And if that doesnt convince you then maybe the wild amount of (sometimes truly bewildering) merch for it might. But anyway, here i go with an essay in the comments.
I can, to some degree, understand someone not liking the tonal shifts and slower more character focused pacing, as they're definitely an acquired taste and not for everyone.
The former, at least to me, was a really good and fun mix of (usually fairly dark and twisted) humor and drama, where the humor at times helped balance out darker or more emotional moments, and at other times actually put those into sharp focus. Its also just not Satoru Noda's style to be fully serious, and personally that really appeals to me! I find the bizarre humor of golden Kamuy hilarious, and if the anime was enough to truly weird you out i dont want to know how you'd feel about some of the content that was either cut to be put in the OVAs (thinking about the 2nd OVA in particular...) or hasnt been adapted yet (legit cannot wait to see the reactions of anime onlys to Usami "Semen Detective" Tokishige getting more of the spotlight)
As for the pacing, it's at the core of what makes me love the series- the way Noda takes time to focus on characters without the less action driven moments feeling like padding. You seem to think the hunts are a strange thing to focus on but i personally feel that theyre kind of genius. They all say something about the characters involved, and alongside the cooking and sharing of food they are what connects the characters together! Asirpa and Sugimoto at first are simply partners because of a common goal, and its through the sharing of culture and food that they bond and form that iron strong connection.
They also tie in with the characters- be it Sugimoto's struggles during the hunt of a deer because he sees himself in its desperate bids for survival, or the way hunting ties into Ogata's past and relationship to killing not only animals but also humans.
What i really, truly dont understand is how anyone could say that Golden Kamuy doesnt have strong themes. I know the anime isn't quite as good as the manga and loses a fair bit of subtlety, especially through the cut narration boxes, panels and at times full arcs put into OVAs, but it still communicates what is at the heart of the series pretty competently, at least to my opinion, so i don't think it's at fault here.
Saying Golden Kamuy lacks depth is just....so insane to me. It for sure doesn't spoonfeed the audience and you have to spend some time thinking over what's being presented, but the themes are plenty and given much depth!
Ideas of tradition and culture are omnipresent in the series: both their sharing, through Asirpas lessons during hunts (which is why theyre so important to the story and its pacing!), and their loss, particularly during the Karafuto arc with Kiroranke pretty much outright speaking of the oppression the Ainu people faced at the time and still face today, and how their culture was erased in many many ways (including seemingly small details such as Asirpa having a japanese name due to the Ainu's forced assimilation via the family registry).
That's without mentioning the themes of war and its effects on soldiers both during and after it. The fact that so much of the cast is made up of soldiers and veterans isnt for nothing, and there are so many things to talk about when it comes to them!! Sugimoto's clear PTSD and survivors guilt. Ogata's struggle since childhood to connect with others being exacerbated by his complex childhood, later position as a sniper - literally killing at a distance - and Tsurumis manipulation. TSURUMI as a character is so much more than a "cartoon villain", and piecing together his motives from hints the story gives without always outright stating them is what makes him such an interesting character despite the horrible things he does.
I feel pretentious saying this, but Golden Kamuy is a complex story that expects its reader to *think* about what it shows and says. It doesn't hand everything over already chewed, and you have to meet it halfway to enjoy it- and that's not for everyone! Which is ok, but if you go into it expecting to just be told everything outright and don't do any work looking into deeper readings and making connections, you indeed might come out of it feeling like it lacked depth. But thats not a problem on the story's part, and i feel like it's fair of a seinen (with an older audience) to expect its audience to pay a minimum of attention to it...
All this is to say, i'm really not trying to say anyone is wrong for finding the bewildering mix of humor and gore strange, or disliking the pacing, or even not wanting to get into a story that asks much more out of you than a lot of more "classic" series. And i'm not saying that Golden Kamuy is inherently better than any other story for it either, it just so happens that i personally really enjoyed being challenged by it! I also very much love more straightforward manga and anime, i'm a Naruto fan for god's sake. I suppose i'm more so trying to shed light onto why a lot of people DO enjoy it? But either way, i hope you don't mind the giant wall of text in your comments lol.
And if someone is reading this and IS a Golden Kamuy fan but hasn't read Dungeon Meshi, i'd really recommend you do! I actually was the other way around and read GK because it was recommended to me as having similar concepts as DM, despite the very different genres. Both are amazing in their own right and i love them for it

Thanks for putting that into words. It’s rare in my experience for a manga/anime to require literary thinking like that, which is why I like it so much! There’s so much to think about, so much to talk about! I finished the manga when it came out and I’m STILL making connections and forming theories.
I got to GK through JoJo (a lot of people do I think) and I think the occasionally demented humor is the initial draw for jojo fans into GK.
My super uneducated guess is that one factor in GK’s small western audience is that we’re not as used to serious subjects and gross-out humor mixing. Not everyone can handle that whiplash, which is why GK has more of a cult following than general appeal. Again, I base this on nothing.
I do think the CGI bear had something to do with it too. I have no one in my life to talk about GK with and the bear is why. 😂 🐻
Also, thanks for the series rec!

@@Stairwellchild ^_^ Im glad someone agrees and that i didnt just come off as a pretentious weirdo preaching about one of my favorite manga... I was pretty late to the GK party (only read it near the end of 2022 lol) but Im the same, still thinking about it and making connections whenever I speak to friends about the characters and plot and everything. Even just looking at older chapters with the knowledge I have now makes me feel like an insane person with a coarkboard and red thread- thinking about that panel of Tsurumi holding the Lightning Bandit and O-gin's baby makes me want to rip my hair out, and thats one example among many many more. This is a series where i finished it, and then still somehow was not sure who was my favorite because i kept thinking harder about different ones and growing to love them more and more. Its a truly unique piece of art, and maybe thats just me being older than the target audience for Shonen at this point, but it was a breath of fresh air reading it.
I do agree the tonal whiplash it goes for probably didnt help it appeal to a wider audience lol, as did the... not exactly amazing anime adaptation. The standout point of it is for sure the VAs, as the whole cast is like!! insanely good!!! But man... that CGI bear. And i dont hear mention of it usually but the stupid fire gif they keep using even up to the abashiri arc. What the hell is that. I do feel a bit bad for the original studio that was tasked with producing the anime, because they were really new and being handed such a complex story with a very dedicated fanbase was... oof. Its not unwatchable, but it definitely looses a lot of the subtlety and substance that makes the manga so amazing.
As for the recommendation, I wouldnt say the DM is anywhere near as unhinged as GK with gross-out humor, but it does have its own unique style that focuses a lot of character interactions and clashing personalities. The cast is really compelling and loveable and i think its biggest similarity to GK is how it handles food! Its arguably even more centered on it, as you follow a party of adventurers trying to get to a lower dungeon level to save one of their members, but since theyre all out of money they resort to eating the monsters they meet on their way. Its for sure its own brand of weird, but it's extremely well written. It actually beat GK to first place in the 'Kono Manga ga Sugoi!' guidebook as voted by men.... twice in a row

You totally missed the biggest theme like in the whole show. The theme is the struggle of the ethnic minorities to survive as distinct entities in the face of modernization.
This theme is the central theme and the general structure of the plot revolves around this and the girls journey herself is symbolic of this transition and conflict between the modern and the traditional.
Characters like the old man are the literal embodiment of this conflict. He is an actual historical figure who is considered the last of the samurai in Japan.
The leader of the 7th represents the fractured messed up nature of the mindset of modernization. In the middle of these two forces are the Aniu people represented by the girl.
This manga is a thematic masterpiece. Watch it again. Learn some history of Japan and you will understand what is going on. You will also need to understand the oppression of the russian empire and the cost of modernizing a nation.
Man this shit is so deep. You kinda totally missed the main story somehow.

I’ve just finished reading the manga and I love it. Would rate it 10/10 and that’s not a common acurance. It has fights on top of trains and under water, with handguns and katanas. The comedy is actually fun but jarring from time to time. It’s definitely a fusion show out of multiple genres but that’s what I love about it. There are shifts in tone but I think it’s more accurate to real life. Yes there is war and fights but life also consists of other things and between every fight there is just regular life, like a breather that sets your feet back into reality. While I’ve enjoyed other manga about themes of war, they often leave you with a bleak outlook that ignores any other aspects of life or the future afterwards, that the fighting is for. In the end it’s a story about how you find a place you feel you belong to, about finding purpose and enjoyment in life. I most enjoyed, how no villain was one note and how different fractions have to fight together even though they still harbour animosity. They also spend time in nature between the gold hunt scenes because as the huntress that Asirpa is, they earn their travel funds that way. Also all the other things you were wondering about are further explored in the rest of the manga; for me it’s definitely a hidden gem of an anime but of course it could just be that it hits the spot for me.

when you say Golden Kamuy feels like it's from another era based on the art style, it reminds me of the anime of somewhere between 2005-2015 where there is slightly realistic lighting, or maybe not realistic but 'glossy' look to them. Not referring to the more moe-like art styles of those years.

The third reason of yours: I read through the manga, and there are a lot of things that the anime cut/will show in the future, and later there are really touching moments. the themes and ideas dont have to be shown explicitly in my opinion, it really works as is. The way this show fleshes out its themes and characters is sooo show dont tell that really matches how real life often works and that makes the world really genuine and kind of realistic (even though every character is crazy and goofy enough to be an entire circus by themselves)

    1. That tonal shift is precisely why I LOVE this anime. It's like a mix between the ridiculousness (and homoeroticism) of Jojo and the carnage of Vinland Saga. It's a twofer! But precisely for that reason, it will only appeal to a certain type of people: you must have both a specific sense of humour and a stomach for violence. And that's OK. Not every show has to be mass appealing and non-offensive. (P.S. It might because I love The Silence of the Lambs, but I didn't find the fashion show scene that disturbing.)
    2. That's not a reason at all, because you could say the exact same thing about One Piece and that is one of the most popular anime EVER.
    3. This could be a reason why there are no deep-dives/ analysis videos about Golden Kamuy, but it still doesn't explain why it isn't mentioned in "Best of YEAR" videos. I personally think all the themes are sufficiently explored. We all know protecting nature is good and war and greed are bad. I don't need to hear an hour-long speech about it. There are a sh*t ton of characters. I much rather spend some time with them, see their interactions, see them having fun, explore their surroundings and discover their backstories.
At the end of the day, I don't care too much that it isn't super mainstream. Sure, I'd love it to be more popular so that it was easier to get merch, but still I'm quite content with it being popular enough that the whole manga is going to get adapted.

The issues you brought up are really the reasons that makes the show so good to me. I would argue Golden Kamuy really explores a lot of these themes, but instead of being preachy or sending a grand message regarding the themes, it let you slowly draw your own conclusion. And I think the final point is that life is an experience based on choice. In golden kamuy, morality is not absolute but relative.

(Sorry if my English is bad, it’s not my first language)
Gk is has a really deep story, and deep character with a full range of emotion, when u say that they get silly sometimes it’s just natural behavior, a guy can’t be cold all the time for a week trip and have the same reaction to weird and unexpected situations, for example Ogata, he has a cold personality and he’s like a psycho but he wants people to understand him, but like all people he has a personality and his character it’s not only a bad guy, he enjoys some things as well. And the same goes with a lot more characters, almost everyone acts childish sometimes like normal human beings.
Also, about the story being slowly , I don’t get that, I only felt that in the first season but with the others ,things go very well, I don’t think they forget about the gold but the situations of the story made them change sides or move to others places, talking about the Ainu and the nature is an essential part of the manga and anime, Noda wanted people to understand the different cultures and how interesting they could be.
As the video says, Golden kamuy is not an anime you would see again, it’s unique and complicated but complete in so many ways, is also accurate with his information and the age it takes place the story, if u want serious character and serious battles it just make gk a regular manga/anime.
Gk is a complex anime/manga for complex people.

I think a big reason why Golden Kamuy isn't more popular is because it gets pretty wild with the comedy and not everyone has the stomach for it.
I saw that there is going to be a live action movie in Japan (the casting looks incredible though it probably helps that the story is actually set in Japan)
and it really makes me wonder how they will approach the comedy of Golden Kamuy because it's one thing to have in a cartoon and another in a live action.
I read some of GK before but I lost track of it and now I'm re-reading it and yeah it's pretty friggin great.

I love history and war themes and this anime got me hooked since episode one, but I've got to admit I needed to pause it every now and then to look for info about so many things: world war zero, weapons, Ainus, and so on. Taking the time to do things we take for granted as hunting to eat are not superfluous in this context, because this is life, you must take the time to smell the flowers when you see them because maybe you'll be dead by tomorrow, and the goofy moments didn't made it bad for me, villains can be happy and foolish sometimes because they are people, not lords of darkness from hell. Hitler was also a good painter, music lover and animals defender, maybe it was not the most important during WWII, but it's interesting. I'm not saying it's perfect, it could be better for western audiences, but I love it as it is.

    Golden Kamuy depicts LIFE.
Life is a contradictory concept that is shown very well in this anime.
Golden Kamuy has a ton of moving pieces to it, it is very well received in Japan where the educational level of their schooling is a lot higher than us in the West; so people watching it already understand a lot of it.
Finally; this anime has a major goal which is to teach the Japanese about their Native population.

it's historical, everyone hates anime set in the past, even worse it's the 1920s... like for real, I had some rotting on my watch later list for years but it was always a huge turn off even though when I watched them, most of these anime set in the past were pretty alright. The 20s-40s are super boring... if I were to watch something set in the past then it has to be 1980s...

I have a theory that the western Zeitgeist for anime and manga are still currently in their Shonen phase. In other words western anime and manga fans are just too immature to appreciate and understand this story. I also blame western content creators for perpetrating bland taste in anime and manga that normies like to eat up currently.
