    Is gauche conformation of ethylene glycol optically active?

      the gauche conformation of ethylene glycol is chiral and hence optically active; however, because the C-C rotational barrier is small, one gauche form goes to the mirror image gauche form by rotation; moreover, the anti form has a centre of symmetry. Overall, ethylene glycol does not show any optical activity. A rule of thumb is: in a freely rotating system if at least one conformation of a molecule has any improper element of symmetry, the molecule is optically inactive.
