- Wondering what the A38 Bike Lane is Like in Birmingham?
James goes for a ride to check out the new stretch of Birmingham's Super Cycle Highway 🚲🚲🚲

I used to live there and moved right after they voted in the cycle path. So good to see it completed!
I think these are a great idea and a good way to encourage more people to cycle , i,m a motorist who also like to cycle and i know how scarey it can be when some idiot flies past you in a car only a couple of inches away from your handlebars
Roas are much better without cars
It looks like a good smooth surface to ride on, much of the facilities in my area I think the tarmac was layed with a pickaxe.
Yeah my neighbourhood opts for the drunken weave method as well 😂 nice to see it’s well laid out though
I don't want to put a downer on what is undoubtably an improvement, but this is probably some of the highest standard of infrastructure in the UK, in the Netherlands it would be an example of the worst. That lane would only be considered wide enough one directional travel, & would never place the cyclist so close to oncoming motorised traffic with so little separations as is the case at 10.30. I notice that there are various metal utility & drainage covers along the route, these are a hazard & will probably lead to premature degradation of the surface.
The Dutch would give cyclists enhanced priority at traffic lights...that was a long old wait to clear not one but two reds at a single junction from 0.57 to 2.26.
There are still too many possible points of conflict between pedestrians & cyclists as the lane suddenly turns into pavement.
At 12.54 you see just how much space has still been given over to cars in Birmingham, while pedestrians & cyclists get scraps in comparison. A horrible sight. Who would want to spend any amount of time there?
I love those bike traffic lights. Makes it much safer
Good infrastructure doesn't use cycle traffic lights.
Wdym they look pretty cool
The usual crop of resentful, self-entitled motorists on here.
Moving the cycle way in the middle looked like they couldn’t give any room from cars up, travelling from one house to the cycle way is unprotected, and the junctions aren’t helpful if you are coming from a direction that isn’t the cycle lane. It’s also some of the best cycling infrastructure I’ve seen in the UK lol
It feels so much safer than everything else that passes for a “cycle lane” in this city. Hope they put in a lot more, and smooth out more of the canals…
@@echotango4591 yea true. But also to do that, they'll have to start actually removing lanes for cars
@@trilingualfudge7307 I dunno, Birmingham has a lot of dead space that could be cycle lanes. We aren’t London, we’re nowhere near as dense! I think we can make big strides without too much compromise…
@@echotango4591 but making that compromise will inevitably lead to more people cycling. If driving is just as good as taking a bike then theres no need for people to cycle. The only people to cycle would be people who already cycled before cycling more often. To make cycling convenient whilst driving less convenient is how people cycle more
@@trilingualfudge7307 oh trust me I’m all for it I just don’t see it being adopted as council policy. They dump those WMCH bikes all over the city in areas with no bike lanes 😂. I’ve used them, they’re ok, but wish it was all a bit more thought through!
I love how it says slow in the cycle lane 😆 if we wanted to go slow we'd get a car and sit in traffic 😆 only joking!
0:23 Strange how its a traffic light for just the pedestrian crossing, but I like it goes green and you can proceed through the other half of the junction.
It makes no sense. Clearly designed by a highway engineer who has never ridden a bike. On a bike you are going slow enough that you can weave through or simply reduce speed until somebody crossing passes. It would also be cheaper, just having a 'give way to pedestrians' sign, or letting people use their common sense.
It looks good when you moving but there was so many long waits at lights!
How come they didn’t make a no stopping box in the road between the paths? Great improvement though, imagine it’s a game changer for commuting 👍
Wow, such a poor execution. Too many stops, too narrow, and it meanders and weaves through lanes of traffic for no apparent reason. Probably an improvement over no bike infrastructure at all but not much thought was put into this.
It's very good by British standards, but yeah still narrow, too many give-ways and the double light waits at two junctions are just horrible. And too many places with no crossing markings to keep bits clear of stopped cars/alert driver that it's a cycle crossing. Could have used one lane of the dual carriageway and made something wide and continuous without stealing a lot of space from pedestrians. Still - that's what passes for progress in this country, and it's clearly a dramatic improvement over just cycling down the A38.
I wonder what BicycleDutch would say about this.
. Wookey Its good but by dutch standards its kinda dead as uk typically dont put much effort into their old narrow roads in dirty shitholes like Bath (not every area in UK)
@Thomas Nichol The thing with bikes is that you need to keep balancing them to stay upright, starting to move from a standstill takes a lot of effort (relatively speaking), stopping at a red light exposes you to rain and pollution, and if you're going to be stopping at all the same lights as a car, next time you might as well stay comfy inside a car instead. One way the Dutch keep people cycling is minimizing stops. They're obsessed with having T junctions with yield signs and Dutch-style roundabouts instead of 4-way junctions with stoplights in order to keep traffic (incl. cyclists) flowing better, separating most bike traffic onto quieter roads where lights aren't necessary, and pushing drivers toward taking the long way around in order to avoid conflicts with cyclist-heavy inner city bits. Type in "Cycling in [any random Dutch city/town]" into the search bar here on YT and you'll find a POV video showing you what that looks like in practice.
@@weetikissa the thing with a bike though is while you might have to stop at the red, you don't have to stop at the greens, wait for them to turn red, stop at the red, move forward a few more wheel rotations on the next green, waiting for space beyond the green, then stop at the same red 5 times until you finally clear the lights.
How brilliant is that !!!
Thanks for making this. Some cleverly thought out design features although there needs to be some keep clear markings on the road at 6' 12". I hope it becomes very popular quickly... clearly the normal carriageway is very cycle unfriendly.
The cycle way is not bad, not really good either. But, thank you for the video nonetheless.
Whilst not perfect it still looks pretty damn good?
Certainly better than anything in Australia.
Nice!
Looks nice.
I hope the space was taken from the road and not the pedestrians. I hope. Also, what’s up with using paint instead of asphalt.
Damn this road has changed since a some years ago wow this is the best example of cycle infrastructur in the UK.
bristol road has changed so much last time i went through it on bus.
*laughs in dutch* 😂😂😂😂
Could have done without the annoying music.
Is it possible to hire a decent bicycle at Birmingham's main train station?
It looks very narrow to be a highway
UKs tryna move like the netherlands in this area lmao
Next step, actually make the asphalt blue instead of blue paint.
even though its an improvement, but not really that much better for the Dutch standards.
@@rogereke3612 That is really nice!.
Still designed for the car constantly stopping and starting. Traffic lights ect loads of money spent. Most of the private cars must go. Sustainable transport goes in this order
Walk. Cycle. Bus. Train. Taxi. Car. SUV.
I hate to be the one who tell it but... if there are lots of traffic lights, vehicles blocking the cycles traffic, crossing pedestrians zones, bus stops cabins (or whatever you name them) and trees blocking one lane....it is not a Super Cycle Highway, but another bike path, which ain't bad, it's an advance anyway.
That looks very well thought out for a cycle lane. It certainly makes a change to other I've seen.
How is the current cycling infrastructure there in Birmingham? Is there a big improvement?
Not much beyond this I'm afraid
I’d say there are a few new lanes. Nothing else at this standard. But a lot of the canals have been improved in recent years as well so between the odd lane we have and those you can cross the city without being much on the road.
so i guess if you wanna serious cycle, 20-25 mph, you'd still be better in the road ?
The path right at the beggining is just too narrow an there is just so many things wrong with it.
1:28 its already a big old joke ain't it...
Looks cool, but sidewalk is to narrow.
Does not matter wide or narrow. Many pedestrians are to stupid to use one .
WHY IS TRILINGUAL FUDGE JUST HATING THEY PUT EFFORT AND TIME INTO THIS VIDEO AND THE BUILDERS PUT EFFORT INTO THE BIKE ROUTE .SO WE SHUOLD BE HAPPY WE ARE SO LUCKY WITH AN AMAZING CYCLE ROUTE!!!
Best in Brum, probably, but thatas a VERY low bar to clear!
lol
lol lol its a joke i take that back its not that bad of a cycle Highway it could be better
Watched 7 minutes of it and 3 cyclist, money well spent ( seriously!!)
Build the lanes and the cyclists will come!
I see many roads that cars hardly ever use. Perhaps we should get rid of them eh?
@@SlinkShady Oh god please no don't. Us UK cyclist ACTUALLY USE THOSE as they are safer than the bike paths and lack cars!
@@kudosbudo I was just pointing out the absurdity of the original comment.
Not exactl;y the Netherlands is it. Did they even look at how the Dutch do it? 3/10.
This is we’re Birmingham city council waste your money through out the video only a few cyclist every 15mins. Honestly there are so many serious projects required attention then this absolute waste of space. I get it’s healthy but your gonna eat when you burn the calories and then an avocado is required via plane. If anything should have started with bike awareness and have loads of bikers before making this stupid bike lane.
What really grinds me is how slow they are 😠😠 was 10 seconds late to my appointment because a fucking cyclist was riding on the road as if they're vehicles or something. Gave the fucker a long blast of horn before slowing down again and turning right in a junction 10 feet away. Time to get rid of cycling lanes for good
@@ronloc3309 Git gud. Just set off earlier. Easy PEasy.
A lot of it is Government funded and not directly from council.
@@ronloc3309 lmao ten seconds
@@kudosbudo if cycle lanes didn’t exist I WOULDNT HAVE TO SET OFF EARLIER
