The Dynamic of Jo and Mike are quintessential left and right; up and down, dark and light of the Atlantic divide. Would you not agree - general viewers, that these two are the atypical representatives of two halves; two sides of the the same whole??? Without each other, there would be no equilibrium?? That's why we are endeared to them so much. Love their journeys so much! They're are so genuine! So - real life!!
@@MinimalList Hehehehehe XD - Awwww....you look so appealing anyways Mikey Boy. You and Jo are the Standout Narrowboater's experience overall. You both are the Sloggers that have kept us Wanting/Craving more and more and more!!! Your momentum is building and will last the long term; without a doubt. Anyone of your subscribers will testify the very same!!! I predict 20K subscribers within 2019.
Been following your journeys for several years and as entertainment, you two are always an absolute delight, now, and watching this video as a reference for a proposed journey, your vlogs are essential to planning. Thank you for all of your hard work bringing the inland waterways inside and to my desktop.
Bridges are built, tunnels are dug. That was a bridge. Size really does not matter. Virtual tummy scratches to George and cheers to J and M. Fair winds.
Kind of agreeing with a couple of other comments, I'd suggest that whether something is a bridge or a tunnel depends on where the original ground was/is - if the way passes below that level (such as under a hill) it's a tunnel, if above (like over a valley) then it's a bridge. BTW that's not the longest tunnel in Bath - the Combe Down Tunnel, is just over a mile long, but you'd struggle to get a boat through it! It's a disused railway tunnel, now the UK's longest cycle/footpath tunnel. Enjoying catching up on the back catalogue, while watching the new vlogs too. Keep up the good humour, guys!
Can you be sensible, No, I couldn’t be either. Your vlogs are amazing I’m really enjoying them, I dropped into them at No.178 and have gone back to No.1.
Fond memories our first canal hire from Bradford on Avon down to nearly Bristol. On you way back before you go back up the deep lock run into Bath right upto the big wier (dead end) very cool architecture great to view from the water. And visit the Roman baths of course.
+Mark Button there was a no entry sign there when we passed and the moorings seem to be closed. We have walked up there though. It is a beautiful city! Jo
Some squirrels like to throw nuts at people from trees. Worse in some places than others. I've had them do it to me in various places in the USofA. I've always wondered if it was funny to them or a declaration of war. Oh and George and the ducks has Weird Al's "I want a new duck" stuck in my head now. Working my way through your journey, can't wait to catch up to current day. Thanks for sharing :)
Balloons are quite common in the Bristol,Bath area as most of the them are made by Don Cameron's of Bristol. If you have time on the way back it's worth the time to have a wander around Bath although it's not as good as Clifton in Bristol.(Local bias)
Another great video. I guess you didn't notice the trapdoor in the roof of the last tunnel you went through, the one with the house above it. Cleveland I think they're called. The house was the headquaters of the canal company and paperwork was passed through to and from the boats as they passed.
This area was featured in episode 1 of great canal journeys ruclips.net/video/8zRI7xwN_mU/видео.html. Jump to about 8:20 for them going through the deep lock
Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous!!! Oh, to be in England! Making great progress guys....through some really spectacular scenery...and canal traffic. That was a deep lock...glad you don't suffer from claustrophobia!
The first lock I went through was Tuel Lane Lock on the Rochdale Canal, its the deepest lock in the UK at 19 feet 8.5 inches, so the lock you did was very close to that. Tuel Lane is also 2 Locks turned into one. I was excited and horrified at the same time! Thanks for the update your videos are great and I love the dog.
+Sylvia Page I'm not looking forward to going up it on our way back. I suppose it your first lock was the deepest it can only get easier from there. Thanks for watching. I agree about the dog too, he is wonderful! Jo
Hello from another Florida follower. This Vlog brings back good memories. Looking forward to your future videos. We lived not too far from there, in Yeovil, and always enjoyed our day trips to Bath and Bristol. Yours Aye!
I "googled" your question about tunnel vs. bridge and like this answer I found: "A tunnel is an underground passage. The definition of what constitutes a tunnel is not universally agreed upon. However, in general tunnels are at least twice as long as they are wide. In addition, they should be completely enclosed on all sides, save for the openings at each end." :)
+David Russell I genuinely wanted to know. The book called it a tunnel but as there were cars going across and it was so short I thought it was surly a bridge!
+John Rice thanks for watching, not sure everyone makes it to the end to see the outtakes! So far the ducks are wiping the floor with George, thank goodness! Jo
The deepest lock in the world is on the Irtysh River at Oskemen in remote eastern Kazakhstan. This lock rises or falls over 40 metres, 139 feet. I took the number 4 bus from downtown Oskemen to have a look at the lock and the hydroelectric dam next to it. Photography of the lock and dam is forbidden, and strictly enforced. Never the less I managed to slip my head through a hole in the iron sheet wall that hides the lock and was able to take a picture. The lock is deep but not huge, around twice the size of a typical Trent lock.
+Michael Erman Less American answer; it's traditional for powered boats to pass on port (left) side to port side, and for any boat in any channel to stay to the starboard (right) side. In America they adopted the same rules for automobiles. I've no idea why England decided to flip that, but worldwide it's an incredibly costly choice. M
Hi guys sorry for having to ask this but are those poop bags there waiting to be disposed of.?? great videos guys what do you guys do about your washing do you have a washing machine onboard or do you make stops at marinas ? S C.
+Steve Capper oops. Michael didn't point the out till the end of the clip. It's in one of the outtakes if you make it to the end of the video. Sometimes if we are mores in the middle of nowhere there are no suitable bins to dispose of George's poops, so the collet on the bow till we find a bin. It is very unfortunate that we then sat next to them to film that clip! 😂 As for the washing, no we don't have a machine, we may try and fit one next year. At the moment we are using public launderette and have been known to take a load to my mums when visiting. Jo
Yes, they are american squirrals, coming over here stealing our nuts :) But you are right, they do use the acorns etc as weapons. I used to watch them in a place I lived down south throwing sticks, acorns, apples at people and dogs that passed their tree. And are very good shots, I was hoping to sign one of them up to the darts team I used to play with. But squirrels are not good team players.
So Jo the dictionary says a tunnel is an artificial underground passage, especially one built through a hill or under a building, road, or river and a bridge is a structure carrying a road, path, railway, etc. across a river, road, or other obstacle. If it does both then I suppose you would call it a bridge if your going over and a tunnel if your going under. Length doesnt come into it.
+Michael Cummings Vlog 24A was day 1&2 and this vlog was day 3 of consecutive days cruising, we usually have a day or two off before long cruising days but not on this part of the journey. It was going to be just one long vlog but the. It just got too long! Jo
"You know nothing! Jo, (Jon Snow) Michael doesn't do sensible EVER! 😜😎 Hope you love the Game of Thrones quote! We are mad GOT fans also and I worry how accessible it is to watch it on the canals? +Joy and Martin Andrews oh yes, we managed to watch the last series of GOT aboard, in fact it is the only thing we have watched and have now cancelled out Now tv subscription. We often find ourselves having in depth conversations about the plot twists and character as if it was real life haha! The river from Bath to Bristol is lovely but the we found the moorings to be quite limited, having said that there seems to be a number of people doing it, there are also quite a few permanent moorings so that is always and option. Good luck with selling the house! Very exciting times. And eek, we are well aware that winter is coming 😉
is it me or did Micheal just compared that deep lock to what his grave may be like or was I hearing things don;t ever change mate you crack me up even my wife was cracked up you should do videos Micheals little out takes and small funny rants. S C,
+Steve Capper there are lots of out tales, we usually put them at the end of each video, pretty sure not everyone makes it to the end to see them. Maybe I should start putting the time stamp in the description. As for funny rants, there are plenty of them but the are not so small. They are loooong! Haha! Thanks for watching. Jo
+Steve Capper yeah, I'll have to chime in here and say they're rarely small. Also, if you can't laugh in the face of Death, who can you laugh at? I mean, he's ALWAYS grinning! M
I doubt that George has been underfed, more likely he's lost weight by all that walking on the tow path, and fetching the ball a thousand times a day. You could try fattening him up with sirloin steak, a 9-ounce steak has about 2 or 3 ounces of protein. Of course it isn't cheap but George deserves only the best!!!!
Take a deep breath before paying your harbour dues. Your wallet will at least feel nice and light.... And secure all your lose crockery, especially if it's windy :-)

Yes, on the way back it will be the first one, obviously. You can't miss the building above the tunnel on the way back as it's rather impressive.
+WobblyBoater Ah, ok. Will look out for it! jo
Michael?? Sensible?? Michael??! Bwah-ha-ha-ha!!! Oh, it hurts to laugh!!! Ow..ow...ow... You both are so cute as you travel through Bawth.

Hi Jo, I figured you were probably just asking a rhetorical question... but the more I thought about it, the more I was wondering myself! ;)
+David Russell I genuinely wanted to know. The book called it a tunnel but as there were cars going across and it was so short I thought it was surly a bridge!
A tunnel is a bore, whereas a bridge is a span. So a tunnel is a structure that is cut through rock, and a bridge is built across a void or obstacle.
Hmm... yeah some of the things they have named tunnels here aren't tunnels, and a few of the things they've called bridges aren't spans. M
I hope you enjoyed you drink at the Salty Sailor lol. Thanks for the vlog.
+adrianuwant3 🤦🏼♀️the Salty Sailor in Jollyford! Hahah. No, the Jolly Sailor in Saltford! Haha
A Sunday morning Hello from Florida. I like the out takes. What the score? George (vs) Ducks?
+John Rice thanks for watching, not sure everyone makes it to the end to see the outtakes! So far the ducks are wiping the floor with George, thank goodness! Jo
If the bridge is longer than your boat, it's a tunnel! How's that?
Hmmm... I think it's got to be a pretty significantly wider bridge than the boat is long to qualify. M
@@MinimalList If less than 50 metres it is deemed to be a bridge.... A tunnel is longer than 50 metres...
Good heavens that lock was indeed deep enough to give the devil a tickle behind the ears! Not one for catching the cill that's for sure!
+Matt Allen no! And we have the return trip to look forward too as well! 😩 Jo!
