  • A mess kit is a cookware used during camping and backpacking, as well as extended military campaigns. There are many varieties of mess kits available to consumers, and militaries commonly provide them to their troops. Military mess kits are designed to be more compact, using their space as efficiently as possible. Thus lids will almost always be used for preparing, cooking, and/or eating, and usually come in two or three pieces.

Agree that this is a good cook set. But the top of the Hungarian mess kit doesn't fit well in the top of the Swedish shield (nor does the Swiss) though the entire bottom of this kit does nest nicely. The Polish mess kit is a better alternative as both pieces can be used independently to cook in the wind shield. You do have to notch the front of the shield a little bit (dremel works well) for a complete storage fit for the Polish kit, and a notch in the back of the shield so the top's handle is protected from heat when cooking with it alone works well too. And a US arctic canteen cup is also a nice fit for cooking on this shield with the Trangia providing the heat. The Polish "bread bag" holds the entire Swedish kit (tightly) with room for a canteen ( the narrow Swiss canteen works well as does the Polish one) in the second internal pocket and has some little pockets for a knife, utensils, a 4 oz. bottle of alcohol (if you didn't put it inside the mess kit).

Loved the video, many thanks for sharing! Plenty of room between the billy and the windshield to fit a bag of brew or washing up items too! Regards Broadlander

The commercial Trangia burners/stoves are smaller but perfectly designed, run about $23 with free shipping and are wonderful but just significantly smaller than the military Swedish ones but they do come with a lid that can put out the fire which the military do not. Do not use the lid to put it out because you will melt the rubber O ring. The Chinese make copies of the Trangia but they are much thinner metal and won't last as long but they are much cheaper.

Try biethanol instead of meths in the Svea burner. It does not smell as bad as meths and is non toxic. It is available in 2 litre bottles from B&Q stores (if you are in the UK).

I call this "Poor man's fake Swedish mess kit". If you carried this in a car then all is fine and you save a lot of money. You might also want to invest in a strap to tie it together, maybe you can even use the strap in the civilian Trangia alcohol stove.
