Football (Soccer) is a way of life for Europeans for us it's more important than life ... my club got relegated this year "Killie" Kilmarnock Scotland's oldest professional football club founded in 1869 football hooliganism between rival fans is common place especially before during and after a game with your local derby rivals sometimes if the fans are not segregated it can spark off inside the ground ... in Scotland all the grounds are segregated but it still doesn't stop the occasional pitch invasion

Even the city centre wasn't safe, I've witnessed a group of supporters lay into a guy walking along minding his own business, just because he wasn't wearing Southampton's colours.

The fights in the stadiums are between rival fans or between a group of the fans and the police. Mostly the first, but fans are now separated so much that it doesn't happen much anymore. With the police I have seen it start a few times when the police was positioned in a way that they were obstructing the view of the people in the front rows and they simply got beaten out of the way, as the fans pay good money to see the game and not to watch at the helmet of a policeman

You saw the confederate flag at Olympiakos stadium, the Reds of Greece are a team located in the biggest port in Medditeranean called Piraeus.
The reason of that goes back in WW2 and the 60s where the American 6th fleet was very active there firstly because of the WW and seconldly in the 60s because of civil war tension.
Also American marines when they werent employed for combat or guard, they were enjoying the local brothels and prostitutes which gave our rivals the opportunity to mock us to this day.
Football in Europe is integrated with politics, class struggle and even war.. That's why you see police being so passive compared to the States.. If they use real violence they could trigger a bigger event which could be way more damaging than what you saw in those videos.
Loved your reaction very different to the others.

Because who ever you are and from you can understand fanatism, and football is likely a gladiator battle for us, and they battle for cities, countries etc. ... So our pride is played there, maybe we accept all of this just because we need it to make it real ? We had a huge hooligan problem in England we got banned from playing the rest of Europe. Now derby days and that the police presence is huge mounted, dogs, riot shields walls to keep groups apart and we still get trouble. Everyone is separated to stop the violence. Also, it took years of undercover and intelligence to infiltrate and take down the major violent football gangs. In the words of the late and great Bobby Robson. “What is a club in any case? Not the buildings or the directors or the people who are paid to represent it. It’s not the television contracts, get-out clauses, marketing departments or executive boxes. It’s the noise, the passion, the feeling of belonging, the pride in your city. It’s a small boy clambering up stadium steps for the very first time, gripping his father’s hand, gawping at that hallowed stretch of turf beneath him and, without being able to do a thing about it, falling in love.”
This is why we Europeans are so passionate about our clubs, they're ours! It might be 'owned' by some billionaire. Owners come and go. we were their before and we will remain after.
through the relegations and the successes. Through the bitter defeats and the euphoric wins.

maybe this is already awnsered, but i will share my humble opinion anyways^^
why a fanblock may use flags, like an american cofederate one, has a simple thing behind it.
some fans use all sorts of flags with the colors of their club. for example bayern munich will choose blue red related flags. bvb dortmund uses all sorts of yellow and black things are used to show the love to the club in the ranks.
its like, all the world has made up their flags in the colors of your team, just to bless honour them. and this is proudly shown.
you will also see flags of different countries, according to the heritage of the current players. to see which nations strength your team grounds on.

this is not fanaticism for sport teams, it is a subculture that allows relatively young men and also older men who have any amount of aggression in them to let it out through chanting and jumping. it is sort of an organized warfare on weekends. and then everyone goes back to their normal lives and families and jobs. of course those few that are ultra aggressive will end up fighting police or in jail or whatever, but most of the fans are not like that. so it is a very good way of letting go of aggression and fulfilling a very human need for tribalistic warfare. and that way we avoid random shootings in the street or between gangs. it is all channelled, released and than people are calm.

Security at football (or as you call them Soccer) matches can’t touch fans they are there for safety and if anything kicks off they get on their radio to the police. I did event safety years ago and if I could have put some idiots out I would have. But we’re not allowed to touch them. Saying that I dunno about Europe but I’m sure it’s all over.

As an older person, i have watched the British game of football take over the globe. To the extent that foreign clubs are huge too & have huge fan bases. There has always been rivalry between British fans from different English clubs & between Scotland, Wales etc. However, the rivalries we see today in foreign nations, goes against everything 'sporting', its become like a war. These people that cover their faces, are out for trouble, they're football hooligans & quite deadly with it. Its not about football to them, its about wars with opposing sides! They aren't true football fans whatsoever.. Simply dangerous thugs & are a disgrace to their clubs & football itself! 🇬🇧🇺🇸

Where I live the local derby between Blackburn rovers and Burnley is a very heated one, they have to get the greater Manchester police and Lancashire police to keep it in check, no fan is allowed to go to the match by another means then coaches (buses) there was a man that lived outside of the Blackburn ground, he had to travel all the way to Burnley so he could watch it back in blackburn where he lived. The fans of both towns are nasty, they will try to destroy anything around them. The UK isn't as bad as it once was just main land Europe where this really still goes on.

You don't really get ultras in England, most fans who attend games now are middle class as it's too expensive for most working class fans to afford the high prices, and the middle class fans don't show that level of passion. The only team in England who an ultras movement is Crystal Palace. It was very different back in the 70s and 80s, violence amongst the fans back then extremely common. I used to follow my team at every game, home or away and witnessed a lot of that sort of thing

Much respect to the Ultras from England! In the 70's and 80's football violence used to be massive. Theres still firms and that now but can't get away with it much now. England still have the reputation as they are still trouble makers and bring the passion when they can but saying that theres so many banned from travelling to support the club and national teams which is a shame. The saying over here in Englans as I'm sure all the Ultras say too is "you can change your wife, religion and friendships but you can never change your football team". Keep up the good work mate

I think I may have mentioned this before, but if you're curious how far this phenomenon can go if you throw in ethnic/nationalistic tensions into it, then look up the riot that erupted on May 13th 1990 at the match between Croatian side Dinamo Zagreb and Serbian side Red Star Belgrade. It was during the waining days of Yugoslavia. A lot of people have called it the football riot that sparked a war, though it's not exactly universally agreed. At the very least, it was a catalyst for it.
I'm sure there must be some videos about it on RUclips. Perhaps it's something to check out in your own time.

Sadly now flares shows are mostly for important games or special moments but at least its not gone forever ,as for the riot police sadly they can cause even more violence if any of them are a bit too keen on using force,31 years old, been to games since 5 and ive seen and taken part un a few fights and i can say some have been started by the police hitting some fans(on rare incidents by targeting non fans by mistake) and from my experience those are the worst ones to be in.
