I grew up in Portland when I was a kid. Bill Walton was awesome before his injury. In 1977, Walton dominated Kareem in the western conference finals. Portland won the championship over the 76ers who had Darryl Dawkins and the Doctor J. The funnest story about Walton is that he rode his bike to the stadium every game, and when the Blazers won they had a huge party downtown and he rode his bike which got stolen. When he got to the mic to talk to the crowd all he cared about was his bike. Crazy time.

After Mike Brown's 1st year the value of the Kings franchise jumped 64% from $2.03 billion to $3.33 billion. That's a $1,333,000,000 increase (over a thousand-million dollars!) That was the 4th highest % increase in the 30-team league. A 4-year competitive salary for a head coach is chump change next to that. (note: The figures after this season will not come out until October.)

Alvin Gentry is the only interim head coach the Kings have had since 2013. Tyrone Corbin was given a two year contract to take over the team after a brief window as an interim. George Karl took over late that season and again, he was on a full contract. The next season the Kings paid Malone and Corbin not to coach, while paying Karl as the coach. The next season they paid Karl not to coach when Joerger was hired.

I would want the person responsible for getting players fired before firing MB. The problem seems more about not having the right players to help this team. Trade Herder and Barnes who do not work anymore. Maybe just Herder and Mitchell. PLEASE Keep Mike Brown. Owner needs to spend all that Baseball $ on Basketball!!!

  • @rghojai

The lack of focus and mental toughness is of no concern, wrt MB? Is it all on the players? Too many games when they didn't show up; had big, long lapses and lost; choked down the stretch in too many games and lost; couldn't make free-throws and lost; too many losses to bad teams. Felt like the same sloppiness and lack of focus we saw when Alvin was coaching.
If a coach can't fix that, why spend big on him/her?
Mike inherited a good roster, had one good year. The last season was a serious disappointment. Spare us the excuses; 9th of 15 in the regular season, same overall. Below average. Not even mediocre.
All that said, the enormous (presumably unanswerable) question: What are the numbers? What's Vivek offering? Will MB take 3/30? Does he want 4/56? Maybe Vivek is being silly. Make Mike is.

  • @edbrewington3

I think it is completely absurd not to resign MB as soon as possible. The roster obviously had holes and on top of that they had several injuries all throughout the season. Mike was just searching for anyone to play smart and be a consistent role player to Fox and Sabonis. He did not get it. Vivek.....get this done.....pay the man his money and bring us the stability this franchise deserves. Do you know the King's history on coaches? We do NOT want to go through that again. The players respect MB and if you don't get this done....what does this say to them? Get it done, Vivek!!! C'mon!

Steve Kerr coached without a new contract in final year and was resigned, so why is it such a big deal for Brown to wait?

Well anytime you got a boss and worker dynamic. You're gonna run into this situation. The reality is ownership will be fine if Mike walks and the team goes in the dump. So they feel very comfortable telling Mike, you're great but we don't know if you're worth x over y. If you're Mike, you know you're worth. You know ownership. And now you know ownership ain't behind you. If they go into the season with no contract, it's gonna be a toxic work environment.
