‘60’s, ‘70’s and ‘80’s in my opinion..I’m mean, The Beatles, Beach Boys, Bowie and Bohemian Rhapsody predated the ‘80’s...what killed that was the rise of folks like Stock,Aitken and Waterman and the pretty girl/boy manufactured music phenomena..before that there were creative people, who actually spurred each other on to make better and better music.

I love hearing the honest explanation of how a song is written, instead of the "every word meant something specific. There was no ad-libbing, and the music was all planned." Great interview.
Never knew who the singer of cutting crew was until this interview. Heard this song so much without knowing any of the behind the scenes about it. Nick seems like a genuine person and pretty cool guy. Great interview indeed
That can backfire sometimes too. When you hear the real meaning of some songs, it destroys the vibe lol. "Sweet Emotion" being (for me) the biggest one.

The entire Broadcast album is excellent. Nick Van Eede and Kevin Scott MacMichael (RIP) were ace songwriters and every single track on that album is 80s pop/rock perfection. This single is surely their biggest hit and is the only song of theirs that most people remember. But tunes like "Life in a Dangerous Time", "The Broadcast", and "Any Colour" are my favorites by far. A serious gem of a record.
(I Just) Died in Your Arms Tonight is a brilliant piece of 80's pop rock. It has everything a great song needs from the lyrics, to the vocals, guitar, keyboards and the hooks. A timeless classic from childhood. Such a great interview, Adam. Thanks again.
This is one of the best interviews of a rock performer I have ever heard! Unpretentious and honest two good charcteristics of a human being. Good job Doc.
This is such a great song, so thanks for sharing the story behind it. I saw Cutting Crew live in 1987, entirely on accident. They were opening for Starship, and my Mom and I happened to be visiting King's Dominion theme park in Richmond, VA, the weekend they were performing there, so we decided to see the show. It was amazing. Starship was good, but Cutting Crew would have blown the roof off if we hadn't already been outdoors. Was my third big concert ever, and I still remember it vividly. That whole Cutting Crew album was fantastic, top to bottom, and they were a tight live band with great energy.
I've always loved the line, "she's loving by proxy, no give and all take"... excellent songwriting right there...I mean, how often do you hear the word "proxy" in a song?
I've seen Cutting Crew's former keyboardist, Tony Moore, perform this song live several times, and it's awesome how everybody in the venue will just instinctively sing along. This really is one of those transcendent songs of the '80s that never seems to get old.
As a lifelong guitarist, I have to say the guitar work in the song is fantastic. There's nothing better than a pop song with hard rock guitar work that is prominent and supports the tune and doesn't overshadow it.
I think because in that era rock bands and most pop bands (most, not all) played their own instruments and mostly wrote their own songs. Duran Duran were as "poppy" as any band in the 80's but they were all really good musicians. You don't see a lot of that today. Rick Beato did a video about that a few weeks ago, how record labels don't trust todays artists to write their own stuff.
Cutting Crew was part of the British invasion of the '80s that included Duran Duran, Culture Club, Johnny Hates Jazz, Wang Chung, Human League, Breathe, Tears for Fears, Fine Young Cannibals, Wham!, and a long list of many others that made the '80s amazing.
Lovely interview with Nick. It was such a pleasure seeing him so excited when talking about the origins of this wonderful classic song. I have sung my heart out to this track more times than I can remember. It never seems to date and I can see myself listening to it regularly until the day I die. I will now go about my day to day activities with a smile on my face thinking of this interview. Thank you for sharing this with us.
This song got a lot of radio play in 1987. It always takes me back to that summer with swimming, playing outside, etc as a 9 year old. My parents always left the radio on so I always associated different songs with season and time of year.

For me, this is pretty much the perfect pop-rock song. It's middle-of-the-road, and I don't mean that in a negative way, because it combines rock with pop elements. It's catchy, radio-friendly, but still has a certain edge and it's just a good sounding tune 👍.
You’re right about that. I was in my full on goth era by 1987, and loved this song. We all did. It wasn’t considered cool, lol, to like the pop radio songs in that high school clique, but this one transcended those genres.

This song was middle school for me and I loved it. Had to rush to my cassette tape recorder to try to record the entire song when it came on! (the record button was always engaged and ready to go when I was listening to the radio!)
@@inconnu4961 Yeah, you'd hope that the DJ didn't talk too much over the intro but they always did! Plus, you'd know the current temperature and the overnight lows to the lovely sounds of a DX7 synthesizer intro lol.

I graduated in 1987, and saw The Cutting Crew open for the Bangles. Originally booked for a outdoor concert, changed into a indoor event, earlier that day, general admission. As soon as school let out, we hauled ass 30mi to the arena at OU, and were the first in the door, dead center, 5-6ft away from the stage. The view was amazing to a 17yr old, especially when The Bangles were on.

I remember waking up in the middle of the night, hearing this song on the radio for the 1st time back in 1987 It has stuck with me ever since. Absolute CLASSIC. I always thought this song was about losing your virginity to a married woman lol. Figured “Cat’s in the cradle” meant her kid was asleep. “I followed my hands, not my head. I knew I was wrong” Thought he was feeling overwhelmed with guilt.
9 in 87. Used to put on the radio after school and in summer. Light rock, new wave, metal, r&b, all those genres were familiar to me. Around 91 started to delve into classic rock and hard rock.
I like your interview style because I notice it's all about the musician you are interviewing. Sometimes interviewers talk too much or try to sound clever or make it about them but that's not why people watch an interview. You have a very relaxed conversational manner and let the musicians do most of the talking.
Nick’s appreciation for what he accomplished with that song, and others, especially the “responsibility” he feels to get it down on paper when inspiration strikes, is inspiring and infectious! Until just now, I never knew anything about him or The Cutting Crew, I just knew I liked their music. But I really like his character and humility!!! Once again, great interview PoR!!
The first time i heard this song i was a kid and fell head over heels for Nick's voice. A few year ago i was lucky enough to finally see him perform it live then hang out with him and chat over a glass of wine. A lifetime of memories from one song.. sorry for the heartbreak Nick, but damn i'm glad some great music came out of it! Excited to discover this channel... nothing like a real music fan!
"The Broadcast" album which contained this song was one of the very first CDs I ever bought. Played it from start to finish hundreds of times and still love it.
In a decade packed with outstanding content coming from every direction, I've always felt that 1984 and 1987 were the two standout years of 80s pop culture. I don't think I realized before that this song was part of the 1987 group, but it's definitely one of the standout songs of the 80s. I loved hearing his story about how he wrote it and how the band put it together.
I recently discovered this song and the Cutting Crew. I missed out on so many great songs raising teenagers in the 80's, working full time to keep insurance for hubby who had cancer. Thank you for the interviews. It is heart warming to see Nick with so much joy recalling his journey. I have been clicking on your posts this week and subscribed today. The very highest and best to all.
What this song meant to me? Graduating high school, trying to find myself & figure out the world. Made some mistakes that year & this song says it all, especially, "I followed my hands to my head, I know I was wrong".
I remember the first time I heard this song!!! Man, it blew my mind!!!!!!!!!!! I was 16 and obsessed!!!!!❤ it still takes me there today @50, I'm 16 again!!!
What a awesome track.....being "in love" with someone and they break your heart only to have that last try moment.....and they say something to make you think there's a chance....died in your arms....must've been something you said and must've been some kind of kiss....but ultimately one sided 😓. Very powerful song and I love the title of the new album 💗🕊️

‘Twist In My Sobriety’ is a lovely song you’re right. It’s so atmospheric. I love the use of the oboe in it. I saw the video for it on VH1 waaayyyy before the reality TV show days 😳😆😆
I was 23 when it exploded on the airwaves. I melted. I had never heard such deep, hypnotic words like this before. Really, it’s everything together that stirs a fire within me. Lyrics. Keyboard. Voice. The video. Of course I have my original Album & then CD. Now it’s on my iPhone. I listen to it, still, today. When I do, I’m instantly catapulted back to the 1980’s & for a brief moment I can actually be that 23 year old girl. I wear a shirt that says “I may be old, but at least I got to see all the cool bands”. Back then, 20 bucks got you into Day on the Green or Mountain Aire etc...(California girl here). I was constantly at a concert in the late 70’s, 80’s & 90’s. It really was the greatest time to grow up!
Love reminiscing about all the songs you go through with the bands. You have such a gift for interviewing and a passion for the music, all music. Great stuff Adam, great stuff.
One of the best 80's songs ever! Fantastic interview....the sincerity of this interview is beyond compare. Thank you for this! Great conversation! My now-wife and I had just started dating, she was two years older and had avoided my pursuits for nearly 4 years. This song means a lot to us and was playing for a few..."events"....
What a pleasant fellow Nick is. This is the first time I've ever seen him interviewed and I enjoyed it quite a bit. Outstanding song and a talented artist for sure. Nice job, Professor!
We are old, but that's ok, it just means we have had more time to listen to amazing music from many eras! We have gotten to witness the evolution of rock/pop music! I wouldn't want to have missed it for the world! :)
1987. Just got my first radio recorder. And one of the first songs I heard was (I just) died in your arms tonight. What a Song! Thanks for bringing back memories.
As an early GenXer, this song was part of my angst-driven late teen-early 20’s. My wife picked up on Nick mentioning Japanese guys coming up to tell him the impact this song has had on them. She’s always asking why you, Adam, don’t mention how a song you feature charted in Japan....and yes, she’s Japanese. 😎
1987 was a phenomenal year. There hardly was a bad song on the radio! I was 12 years old. I was at the perfect age...Still today you can't get away from this song.

I was married in 1987 what a fantastic time. I listen to all the 70s 80s music. I feel that I grew up in the best of the best 👌. Great interview.
The song that made take the long way home when it came on the car radio!
I love how he mentioned other great sobgs but went humble and said "not to put myself in the escelon".
This song was middle school for me and I loved it. Had to rush to my cassette tape recorder to try to record the entire song when it came on! (the record button was always engaged and ready to go when I was listening to the radio!)
Same, but in 1996!
Same! I wish I still had those tapes! All the old commercials, and the funny banter of the DJs! I miss it!
@@inconnu4961 Yeah, you'd hope that the DJ didn't talk too much over the intro but they always did! Plus, you'd know the current temperature and the overnight lows to the lovely sounds of a DX7 synthesizer intro lol.
New generations would never experience the rush when you finally recorded the song you were waiting
@@mr.Drawgo it’s so true! It’s nice to be able to go and find a song you haven’t heard in a while, but *nothing* compares to 1) catching your song on the radio (when you’re not just about to leave the car!) 2) having the “record” button ready
With the amount of high-quality content you're producing, I'm convinced you never sleep! :)
I'm a bit of an insomniac! Ha ha. Thanks for watching!

Normally his eyes are like anime eyes...
When he does sleep he wears a custom sleep mask from Zenny Eyeware.
It was one of my favorite songs back in the day. Another favorite was from Johnny Hates Jazz Shattered Dreams. Can you talk about that one?
yep very same year 87
Love that song 😁
Love that song so did my sister
The album has a couple of other great songs as well.
Shattered Dreams, like this tune, is so perfect I will never get tired of hearing it, it just sends me...
What a really cool, fun guy! He mentions all those classic masterpieces and then says his song doesn't belong amongst them... Oh, yes it does! Lightning in a bottle as you say.
I remember waking up in the middle of the night, hearing this song on the radio for the 1st time back in 1987
It has stuck with me ever since.
Absolute CLASSIC.
I always thought this song was about losing your virginity to a married woman lol.
Figured “Cat’s in the cradle” meant her kid was asleep.
“I followed my hands, not my head. I knew I was wrong”
Thought he was feeling overwhelmed with guilt.
I was 14 in 1987 and it definitely shaped my musical tastes to hear all that at the beginning of my journey to growing up.
born in the 70s grew up in the 80s raved in the 90s
I was 14 turning 15 in 87 as well. Such an amazing time to grow up.
9 in 87. Used to put on the radio after school and in summer. Light rock, new wave, metal, r&b, all those genres were familiar to me. Around 91 started to delve into classic rock and hard rock.
Same
RIP Kevin MacMichael. The soul and back bone of all CC tracks. Just the best vibrato/bending you'll ever hear from a guitar!!
"Can I tell you a story?" Sure. Best interviewer ever.
It's so hauntingly beautiful...he still looks amazing!
I still love I've Been in Love Before. Still gives me chills. Also, I had a crush on Nick Van Eede 😊
I don't blame you. Great guy too.
Awesome track.
Yes! Another under-played song of the 80’s that you rarely hear on the radio anymore.
58 … to me he seemed just as fresh and alive as a 17 year Old, all about the attitude, i love it, great interview 🙏
This channel has the best Content ever. Was 15 in school when this came out. Endless hours on phone with girlfreind, great memories.
I listened to this song over and over as a kid. The guitars are perfect in this sing.
I love this. Prof is on top of asking great questions,he such a great listener. But Nick is so into it as well! Makes it lovely to watch!
I like your interview style because I notice it's all about the musician you are interviewing. Sometimes interviewers talk too much or try to sound clever or make it about them but that's not why people watch an interview. You have a very relaxed conversational manner and let the musicians do most of the talking.
I Love the "honest" answers. Best music channel for folks like me, music of my youth with the prefrontal cortex enjoined.
"120 Minutes" on MTV was a much watch for me every week.
I remember when this song hit the radio. I loved it from the instant I heard that signature intro.
I really love that Berlin t shirt!!! I will sing my little heart out whenever this song comes on the radio
Same here! Love it. Thanks for watching
I ❤ Terri Nunn !
........i was 16 and just entered college..........man this song is forever stuck in my teenage memory.......i effing love it.........
Killed another one professor!!! That's a kick ass interview, enjoyed every minute of it.....
What a great interview! Love the song and the memories t brings. 1987!!!
Love this song but my favorite from him is" I've Been in Love Before" Man, such a beautiful song!
We have the story of that too!
@@ProfessorofRock .....whaAAAAT!!??? ....my very first 'promo CD Single' has a STORY comin'!?? >wheresmypopcorn
@@RBS_ he did that one a long time ago, that's how I discovered it
@@ProfessorofRock AWESOME!! looking for it right know, THANK YOU!! =)
I still prefer Died but great one too. Very, very good song. Awesome atmosphere. Great choice!
The sincerity from the artist is endearing
In a decade packed with outstanding content coming from every direction, I've always felt that 1984 and 1987 were the two standout years of 80s pop culture.
I don't think I realized before that this song was part of the 1987 group, but it's definitely one of the standout songs of the 80s. I loved hearing his story about how he wrote it and how the band put it together.
I totally agree!
And you made another mistake, cuz you've got those lyrics wrong. So, there's that! lol
@@DarkFlamage yep, I guess I did but same outcome.
Thank you for sharing !
I remember the first time I heard this song!!! Man, it blew my mind!!!!!!!!!!! I was 16 and obsessed!!!!!❤ it still takes me there today @50, I'm 16 again!!!
Cutting Crew are criminally underrated. Their three, that’s right....three albums are GEMS.
There’s now 3 more so 6 albums in total, all pretty different but all pretty good!
Oh please, please, pretty please let him talk for another two hours about music, band history and everything else. Nick is such a great teller.
Thanks for watching!
Great interview. Just heard this song again on the radio the other day. Excellent.
Saw Cutting Crew concert that summer at the little Ontario Place Forum. They played that song last. Still remember it.
Hi Adam. SUPER GREAT ACE INTERVIEW with Nick. Yea he is an Ace man and my dear friend for a looong time, and Kevin.
Both Master craftsman with All music and lyrics.
A Must to hear also Compus Mentus Brilliant album!
Ransomed Healed Restored Forgiven. A 4 CD Box set.
Is A Masterpiece that when I heard that my thoughts were This Absolutely Must win at The Classical Awards! Just all Splendid.
Berlin In Winter. I love that song too.
If you haven’t seen CC Live, then you must. You Will have a Great wonderful evening.
Enjoy.
JB. Surrey. UK.
The first time I heard it, I thought “Oh cool! Asia’s recording again!”
So treu!!
funny how it seems...
I never made that connection before. But yes this is very similar to Asia. The style and the guys voice. Good call.
Somebody using Napster mislabeled it as an REO Speedwagon tune.
Wow I never heard that before, but you’re right!!! It DOES sound like them!!!
Me too!
Mesmerizing instrumentals, vocals, and lyrics...gives me goosebumps every time i hear it. Just can't stop listening to it...pure perfection...and let's not forget how adorably sexy Nick Van Eede is. Don't ever, never let this masterpiece of the 80s die!! ❤❤❤
"Twist In My Sobriety" and/or "Cathedral Song" (Tanita Tikaram, 1988) REALLY needs to be talked about.
Thank you for watching! We'll keep doing it, if you'll keep watching!
@@ProfessorofRock Count me in!!
The live at Rockpalast 2007 version will blow your mind. Really shows Gareth's guitar skills. WHO KNEW?
One of the best 80's songs ever! Fantastic interview....the sincerity of this interview is beyond compare. Thank you for this! Great conversation! My now-wife and I had just started dating, she was two years older and had avoided my pursuits for nearly 4 years. This song means a lot to us and was playing for a few..."events"....
What a pleasant fellow Nick is. This is the first time I've ever seen him interviewed and I enjoyed it quite a bit. Outstanding song and a talented artist for sure. Nice job, Professor!
It makes me feel old to see how old these 80's rock starts are getting.
It charted in 180 markets.. cannot mention all
1987 was a phenomenal year. There hardly was a bad song on the radio! I was 12 years old. I was at the perfect age...Still today you can't get away from this song.
One of the better one hit wonders of the 80's. A genre defying song. Still sounds fresh today.
They had a few hits though not just one. “I’ve been in love before” is my favorite, and you also have the semi hit “One For The Mockingbird”
