The story is told by it’s singer and songwriter including an acoustic performance, this is a can’t miss next on professor of rock.

#80s #ClassicRock #Story
Hey music junkies and vinyl junkies Professor of Rock always here to celebrate the greatest artists and the greatest 80s vinyl songs of all time for the music community and vinyl community.
If you’ve ever owned records, cassettes and CD’s at different times in you life or still do this is your place Subscribe below right now to be a part of our daily celebration of the rock era with exclusive stories from straight from the artists and click on our patreon link in the description to see our brand new show there.
1987 was grand year for music with Def Leppard Whitesnake and Guns N Rose releasing landmark albums on the harder side of Rock, George Michael, Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson dominated the charts with their latest releases, with blockbuster albums filled with hit singles . U2 and REM were taking College rock to the masses with the Joshua Tree and Document, it was an amazing time to be young and embracing all of this music as the soundtracks of our lives. IN the middle of all of this a band that formed in London in 1985 named Cutting Crew released a single that haunted listeners and leap frogged over all of the previous acts I mentioned to hit Number one on the billboard hot 100.
I Just Died In Your Arms tonight was a game changer for sure, it also flew to #1 in Canada, Norway, and Finland, and reached the top five in the UK, South Africa, Sweden, and Switzerland and it’s still attracting new listeners, as one of the go to songs for other cultural mediums when trying to create that perfect aura and feeling of the 80s. It was used in Season 3 of Stranger Things, in an iconic moment in that episode and it was used in the Lego Batman movie. It’s just a potently nostalgic song that puts you in a trance. And it’s one of those song that’s a mystery, many wanted to know what the lyrics meant? Well I was fortunate to spend some time with Cutting Crew lead singer and songwriter Nick Van Edde who not only gives us insight into the mystery but also shares how he created, with his acoustic guitar, he gives an exclusive breakdown performance.
This one’s awesome. as we go into this interview I want to thank our sponsor Zenni Eyewear, the frames I swear by. I just go this new pair and they send you so many extras, I designed these at Zenni.com, adds sunglasses and Blokz to protect my eyes from digital blue light as well, as anti go and anti glare, and with their mirror feature I got to see how I looked before I bought, Treat yourself. design your own pair at Zenni.com for less than the price of a vinyl record. Here’s the story of I Just Died In Your Arms.
Very recentlythe song was rerecorded and reissued as an orchestral incarnation as well as in several other versions as the lead single for the second Cutting Crew Compilation album , "Ransomed Healed Restored Forgiven,” with a new music video that we’ll link to. the new release for the hit has been through an 8-track EP, Isn’t it just breathtaking?

I agree 100%. 👍👍
Yes!! You nailed it.
You are so spot on! I Love the Professor 😄
He looks like he had a great time talking about the back story. You have to love that passion and the fact he’s not bored with it after all these years. This was an enjoyable interview.
I don't think that smile left his face the whole interview. What a joy.
YES! It's so disheartening when a creator ends up hating something they created that you absolutely love. It's fulfilling to see him light up when he talks about this classic gem.
@@thanksfernuthin
Like the Goo Goo Dolls and their big hit "Iris". The lead singer has openly said that he hates that song now because everyone wants to hear or talk about it.
'80s was such a great decade for music that even Pop music of 80s kicks ass!
they were sincere
80's was clearly the best decade of music!!! 70's was a close second!
I think because in that era rock bands and most pop bands (most, not all) played their own instruments and mostly wrote their own songs. Duran Duran were as "poppy" as any band in the 80's but they were all really good musicians. You don't see a lot of that today. Rick Beato did a video about that a few weeks ago, how record labels don't trust todays artists to write their own stuff.
@@mylovesongs2429 exactly ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Yeah, we even got to tape our favorite songs right off the radio. Great time!!
His eyes are beautifully blue!
This is one of the best interviews of a rock performer I have ever heard! Unpretentious and honest two good charcteristics of a human being. Good job Doc.
I like your original comment ! Two good too good !
This is such a great song, so thanks for sharing the story behind it.
I saw Cutting Crew live in 1987, entirely on accident. They were opening for Starship, and my Mom and I happened to be visiting King's Dominion theme park in Richmond, VA, the weekend they were performing there, so we decided to see the show. It was amazing. Starship was good, but Cutting Crew would have blown the roof off if we hadn't already been outdoors.
Was my third big concert ever, and I still remember it vividly. That whole Cutting Crew album was fantastic, top to bottom, and they were a tight live band with great energy.
Lovely interview with Nick. It was such a pleasure seeing him so excited when talking about the origins of this wonderful classic song. I have sung my heart out to this track more times than I can remember. It never seems to date and I can see myself listening to it regularly until the day I die. I will now go about my day to day activities with a smile on my face thinking of this interview. Thank you for sharing this with us.
What a great interview and such a sweet man - I think I just died again...
I lived this song as it was written in 1987 1 was 21.....and I'm 21 everytime I hear it
I'm 21 for 27 years now... I know what you mean ;)
Tee-here. You are OLLLLD.
I was only 18.
@@BillLaBrie You're old. I was 15. Lol
I was 21 too!:)
I turned 21 late in 87, so we are right there together
Oh please, please, pretty please let him talk for another two hours about music, band history and everything else. Nick is such a great teller.
A song that typifies what the 80s were all about - you never knew what was coming at you in the 80s, the level of originality and creativity was unparalleled in my view. 80s forever!
‘60’s, ‘70’s and ‘80’s in my opinion..I’m mean, The Beatles, Beach Boys, Bowie and Bohemian Rhapsody predated the ‘80’s...what killed that was the rise of folks like Stock,Aitken and Waterman and the pretty girl/boy manufactured music phenomena..before that there were creative people, who actually spurred each other on to make better and better music.
Yes!!!!!!!👏👏👏👏❤️❤️❤️❤️
(I Just) Died in Your Arms Tonight is a brilliant piece of 80's pop rock. It has everything a great song needs from the lyrics, to the vocals, guitar, keyboards and the hooks. A timeless classic from childhood. Such a great interview, Adam. Thanks again.
Thank you! It's one of my favorites!
Died in your arms= orgasm
@@campbellfiles9019 I like your original comment ! Come now !
This is one of my all time favorites. The guitar solo is amazing and the keyboards and vocals also. And Nick is such a delight to listen to. He really is honest and open and seems to enjoy talking about his music.
I graduated in 1987, and saw The Cutting Crew open for the Bangles. Originally booked for a outdoor concert, changed into a indoor event, earlier that day, general admission. As soon as school let out, we hauled ass 30mi to the arena at OU, and were the first in the door, dead center, 5-6ft away from the stage. The view was amazing to a 17yr old, especially when The Bangles were on.
I love hearing the honest explanation of how a song is written, instead of the "every word meant something specific. There was no ad-libbing, and the music was all planned." Great interview.
I agree. I saw the intro to this video and knew which song the video was covering, but it is refreshing to learn more about it.
Never knew who the singer of cutting crew was until this interview. Heard this song so much without knowing any of the behind the scenes about it. Nick seems like a genuine person and pretty cool guy. Great interview indeed
That can backfire sometimes too. When you hear the real meaning of some songs, it destroys the vibe lol. "Sweet Emotion" being (for me) the biggest one.
@@glenchapman3899 I know what you mean. It's like playing Russian roulette. You never know if learning more will add to it or ruin it. Is the extra info worth losing the song? There are artists I don't even bother looking into.
RIP Kevin MacMichael. The soul and back bone of all CC tracks. Just the best vibrato/bending you'll ever hear from a guitar!!
I've always loved the line, "she's loving by proxy, no give and all take"... excellent songwriting right there...I mean, how often do you hear the word "proxy" in a song?
I vote yes, it was needed there !
Mesmerizing instrumentals, vocals, and lyrics...gives me goosebumps every time i hear it. Just can't stop listening to it...pure perfection...and let's not forget how adorably sexy Nick Van Eede is. Don't ever, never let this masterpiece of the 80s die!! ❤❤❤
One of the best 80's songs ever! Fantastic interview....the sincerity of this interview is beyond compare. Thank you for this! Great conversation! My now-wife and I had just started dating, she was two years older and had avoided my pursuits for nearly 4 years. This song means a lot to us and was playing for a few..."events"....
I love that he is having a having a good time telling the story!
It was one of my favorite songs back in the day. Another favorite was from Johnny Hates Jazz Shattered Dreams. Can you talk about that one?
yep very same year 87
Love that song 😁
Love that song so did my sister
The album has a couple of other great songs as well.
Shattered Dreams, like this tune, is so perfect I will never get tired of hearing it, it just sends me...
The sincerity from the artist is endearing
This channel has the best Content ever. Was 15 in school when this came out. Endless hours on phone with girlfreind, great memories.
What a great interview! Love the song and the memories t brings. 1987!!!
Cutting Crew had another great hit in 1987 with "I've Been In Love Before," which hit No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the fall of '87. In the summer that year, they had a minor top 40 hit (in the U.S.) called "One for the Mockingbird" that's an overlooked '80s gem (in my opinion).
I agree 100%. "One For The Mockingbird" got a good amount of airplay here in Canada. Actually, IMHO, the entire album is very very good.
Love ‘I’ve been in love before’. I don’t feel like it ever got enough love! I have it on my regular playlist on my phone.
That guitar breakdown in "I've Been In Love Before" during the bridge...oh my. That guitarist was really good.
Thank you for mentioning "I've Been In Love Before"! i didn't remember it by the title but i went and listened to it and it was goosebumps all the way. Hadn't heard that song in decades!
+Janet Cox Oh yeah, "I've Been In Love Before" is awesome as well. I really liked that one too, I still listen to it to this day
Great interview. Just heard this song again on the radio the other day. Excellent.
Such a humble guy. His vocal tone was awesome on this tune. As a vocalist, I'm always listening for great vocals for inspiration. Great vocalist.
What this song meant to me? Graduating high school, trying to find myself & figure out the world. Made some mistakes that year & this song says it all, especially, "I followed my hands to my head, I know I was wrong".
And you made another mistake, cuz you've got those lyrics wrong. So, there's that! lol
@@DarkFlamage yep, I guess I did but same outcome.
Thank you for sharing !
Cutting Crew was part of the British invasion of the '80s that included Duran Duran, Culture Club, Johnny Hates Jazz, Wang Chung, Human League, Breathe, Tears for Fears, Fine Young Cannibals, Wham!, and a long list of many others that made the '80s amazing.
That’s right, Janet. Thnx for posting.
Those Brits knew how to write good pop music.
No they weren’t .Maybe for 5 minutes
Yep!! 80’s ruled.
None of these artists are as iconic as The Beatles and The Rolling Stones!
Saw Cutting Crew concert that summer at the little Ontario Place Forum. They played that song last. Still remember it.
In a decade packed with outstanding content coming from every direction, I've always felt that 1984 and 1987 were the two standout years of 80s pop culture.
I don't think I realized before that this song was part of the 1987 group, but it's definitely one of the standout songs of the 80s. I loved hearing his story about how he wrote it and how the band put it together.
I totally agree!
This is amazing! So, at 17, I'd been dating the love of my life for a little over a year, the last couple of months were on again/off again. We would break up for a week, date another person, and always gravitate back to each other. On our last break up, only a week had passed (but it felt like a year in 1984), I get a phone call at home, it's her. After some small talk she says, "can you come over, I'm here all alone". I was out the door and on my way before the dial tone started on the other end. She met me at the back door of her parents home and she led me into their bedroom, which was the only room in the house we had not made love in. We made a mess of the freshly washed linens and neatly made bed. It was passionate, but something deeper too. It touched a part of my young soul that only make up sex can reach in a teenage boy's heart. It was the most incredible thing I had ever experienced, previously, or ever since. As we both finished together, tightly embraced, her on top, she whispered in measured gasping breath, "Please know, that I, I will always love you"... We showered together, seemingly happy, and I went on my way back home, thinking all was well. She never accepted another phone call from me again. She started dated a guy with wealthy parents. They went on to marry and have 4 children. This song, when it came out, I was mesmerized. My "HARD ROCK" buddies would make fun of me over it, but I didn't care. For some reason it really struck a cord with me and I love it to this day. Now I know why. Great job Professor. Thank you.
The entire Broadcast album is excellent. Nick Van Eede and Kevin Scott MacMichael (RIP) were ace songwriters and every single track on that album is 80s pop/rock perfection. This single is surely their biggest hit and is the only song of theirs that most people remember. But tunes like "Life in a Dangerous Time", "The Broadcast", and "Any Colour" are my favorites by far. A serious gem of a record.
I agree 100%
Brilliant album from start to finish.
Any Colour is criminally underrated
What a pleasant fellow Nick is. This is the first time I've ever seen him interviewed and I enjoyed it quite a bit. Outstanding song and a talented artist for sure. Nice job, Professor!

I absolutely LOVE that song!!! Brings back many memories!!
As an early GenXer, this song was part of my angst-driven late teen-early 20’s. My wife picked up on Nick mentioning Japanese guys coming up to tell him the impact this song has had on them. She’s always asking why you, Adam, don’t mention how a song you feature charted in Japan....and yes, she’s Japanese. 😎
It charted in 180 markets.. cannot mention all
I remember the first time I heard this song!!! Man, it blew my mind!!!!!!!!!!! I was 16 and obsessed!!!!!❤ it still takes me there today @50, I'm 16 again!!!
I saw these guys on tour here in the UK, just around the time the song broke. It was down in the subterranean dance hall club of the University of Essex along with about 200 other people!
Very cool! I've seen them a few times over the last few years as well on various 80s tours and I think he's in really good voice. Thanks for watching.

I'm blown away by how much I loved him singing with his guitar, that was beautiful.. what a cool guy. Loved this interview
He sounded so good, I wanted to hear more!

I would have as well! IBILB was THE song....the one that was connected to my biggest heartbreak and has never left me. At least I can listen to it now with fond memories instead of tears.
I love that song so much 😍
My favorite too. Always loved hearing it.
Yes that was another good one!
I hear this song most every day on radio.
I think I subconsciously borrowed the lead riff. So iconic!
As I love watching your content, today I binge listened to many episodes, as worked. Thanks, Professor!
Unforgettable. It was half way between your girlfriend leaving you and the next day finding the love of your life. Loved it. Still do.
Was just listening to this song on Y/tube which I listen to just about every day while vaping up some good bud. So edifying to know that I am not nuts for listening to this every day, it's the perfect high song. Great video, can't believe I can get to the bottom finally of how this song originated, how it was put together since I didn't listen to it back in the day that I can remember because most of the music sucked in that era, I listened to college radio type stations that played decent music post the 'good music timeframe of the 60's and early 70's when something new and different and totally wonderful would pop up every other month. Been a desert of music since then with only a few exceptions.
For me, this is pretty much the perfect pop-rock song. It's middle-of-the-road, and I don't mean that in a negative way, because it combines rock with pop elements. It's catchy, radio-friendly, but still has a certain edge and it's just a good sounding tune 👍.
That's why it Was a hit. Fit in with all formats of 📻.
You’re right about that. I was in my full on goth era by 1987, and loved this song. We all did. It wasn’t considered cool, lol, to like the pop radio songs in that high school clique, but this one transcended those genres.
Just love the Proff's posts. They bring back such happier moments in my life. Sometimes I need these reminders of what mattered to me back then and what helped me form who and what I am now. Thank you, Proff, from someone who is now an old geezer!
If this song had a cousin, it would be "Shattered Dreams" by Johnny Hates Jazz...
Hell yes
How about "Take These Broken Wings"?
Or “boulevard of broken dreams”
Best reply ever....
Wow......totally! Man, I haven't heard that title or band name in years, but it instantly evoked the feeling that you said....cousins.
YESSSS! The orchestral version is awesome. 💖✨🎶
I've seen Cutting Crew's former keyboardist, Tony Moore, perform this song live several times, and it's awesome how everybody in the venue will just instinctively sing along. This really is one of those transcendent songs of the '80s that never seems to get old.
Best song I ever heard. I grew up with my parents playing me the likes of Elvis, Johnny Cash, Queen, the Stones, Neil Diamond just to mention a few, but the 80's was the music that really spoke to my teenage soul and this song out of all the 80's was the one that stirred my soul more than any other. Nick's voice and songwriting just raises the hairs on the back of my neck. I have been listening to that whole album ever since. I almost choked laughing when Mark Lamaar, host of Never mind the Buzzcocks claimed that the alternative rejected song title was 'Well that's that then, bacon sandwich?' after the intro's round.
Saw these guys in 1987 in Fort Wayne, IN. They opened for Starship . I'd go back to the 80's in a heartbeat !
I want to go too. And stay there.
Enjoyed this interview.
OMG I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR CUTTING CREW TO BE FEATURED!!!!!!! Thank you for finally getting to them. This album is *phenomenal*. There is so much going on *between* the songs that demands it be listened to in one sitting. Professor, I would love to see how you break down the whole album.
A song I’ve heard a million times and never get sick of. Goes in my top ten favorite songs from the 80s
I Love the "honest" answers. Best music channel for folks like me, music of my youth with the prefrontal cortex enjoined.
This interview was so interesting and entertaining. Nick is awesome honesty, humor and great storytelling.
Ah yes, the eighties. My favorite by Cutting Crew is I've been in love before. There was so much good music back then.
I just revisited and watched this video again. This was so informative and straight up from Nick. Love it!
I still love I've Been in Love Before. Still gives me chills. Also, I had a crush on Nick Van Eede 😊
I don't blame you. Great guy too.
Awesome track.
Yes! Another under-played song of the 80’s that you rarely hear on the radio anymore.
This song resonates; every time I hear it I'm back in time, making out with my girlfriend in the back of my cousin's '67 Parisienne, with that song playing on the tape deck. My teen years were made all the more magical by the music, not only of my own era but also of the decade before; the panoply of music of the 70's led directly to the new wave, rock and pop of the 80's. I came of age in the 80's and while I continue to listen to modern 'alternative' music (thank you, Cure et al, for gifting me with the appreciation for music that is subtly if not greatly 'different'), hearing a song by any of the timeless artists of the 80's, I'm transported back in my mind to those years. That's the magic of timeless artists; for every generation that was 'there', they evoke those memories. For those who weren't, it's like finding a musical gem whose luster hasn't ever faded.
This was The Song my high school sweetheart and I latched onto until we broke up in 1989. We got back together in our 30's in 2003-2009 and it ended in disaster. "I should have walked away..."
I had the exact same thing happen to me with my high school sweetheart; we got back together in our 30’s for about the length of time as your’s. And also ended the same way; disaster. At the risk of sounding dramatic, I remember thinking at the time that it was the death of a dream. I’m sorry for what you went through.
Don’t beat yourself up, most of them end in disaster
Emotion 98.6 on Vice City - listening to these tunes really awakened me to the beauty of 80's music. That Grand Theft Auto title, despite the violence etc is a beautiful nod to the greatness of the decade!
This song was middle school for me and I loved it. Had to rush to my cassette tape recorder to try to record the entire song when it came on! (the record button was always engaged and ready to go when I was listening to the radio!)
Same, but in 1996!
Same! I wish I still had those tapes! All the old commercials, and the funny banter of the DJs! I miss it!
@@inconnu4961 Yeah, you'd hope that the DJ didn't talk too much over the intro but they always did! Plus, you'd know the current temperature and the overnight lows to the lovely sounds of a DX7 synthesizer intro lol.
New generations would never experience the rush when you finally recorded the song you were waiting
@@mr.Drawgo it’s so true! It’s nice to be able to go and find a song you haven’t heard in a while, but *nothing* compares to 1) catching your song on the radio (when you’re not just about to leave the car!) 2) having the “record” button ready
This is one of the best interviews! What a great storyteller and character! Professor has the knack to let the guest flow and get into the story. Favorite!
This song got a lot of radio play in 1987. It always takes me back to that summer with swimming, playing outside, etc as a 9 year old. My parents always left the radio on so I always associated different songs with season and time of year.
I’ve always loved this song, it’s so incredibly moving. The lyrics are so descriptive and honest. Real heartbreak can’t be faked. The best songs are the ones that display an overwhelming, universal emotion. I think the ones about longing are always the best.
The first time I heard it, I thought “Oh cool! Asia’s recording again!”
So treu!!
funny how it seems...
I never made that connection before. But yes this is very similar to Asia. The style and the guys voice. Good call.
Somebody using Napster mislabeled it as an REO Speedwagon tune.
Wow I never heard that before, but you’re right!!! It DOES sound like them!!!
Me too!
First time I heard this song was at my Sr. Prom. I was on the dance floor all night long, and when it came on time just stopped. I just stared into the lights and stopped breathing. I had to know what this song was and who sang it. To this day... one of my favorite songs.
Not sure if you have done ... Breathe- Hands to Heaven
YES! I would love if he did that song!!
Thank you, I can't find anything on him doing it...it has to be one of the most ... beautiful (for lack of a better word) songs of the 80s...
That was a great one and also "How can i fall" was another hit by Breathe.
I'm waiting for an opportune time to suggest this song, and also a video on Art of Noise.
Loved that one too. 🖤
I heard these songs because my daughter's were in his hood and college ..they played them ,I listened. And frankly I liked their music better than most of thecmusic from late 59's and 60's.
My cousin and I had parody lyrics for this song. Where we used to sing. I died on your bowl last night, must have been something I ate.
Omg 🤣🤣🤣
I would like to hope that version was wiped.
I have a friend who sang it as, "I just died from your farts tonight, it must have been something you ate".
"i've been in love before" is the favorite song of mine from this group. nick looks a bit like sting nowadays.
“Every line can’t be brilliant.” = freedom. Thank you
I was 24 in 1987 and the music was awesome. So many new choices of music genre and moods. That song, I just died in your arms tonight, was hugely significant to me. Truly great interview. Thanks for sharing.
What a awesome track.....being "in love" with someone and they break your heart only to have that last try moment.....and they say something to make you think there's a chance....died in your arms....must've been something you said and must've been some kind of kiss....but ultimately one sided 😓. Very powerful song and I love the title of the new album 💗🕊️
Thanks for watching!
What a brilliant stand out classic 80s song. The perfect rare song that exists in infinity. The vibe is one of becoming one with the song and the powerful emotion it evokes in the listeners soul.
Words won't express how much I love this song, and I've been meaning to learn all about it for decades, and now, finally, I can check this one off my list. What an incredibly brilliant work it is.

I was living in Australia when I first heard this great song. I thought, "Foreigner has hit the top again".....but it wasn't Lou...........and it was great! thanks.
This song was everywhere. You could not turn on a radio without hearing it. I was getting married to my first wife. Life was good.
The Broadcast was my very first vinyl.. Was very picky with my music during my youth. Second vinyl was.. The Joshua Tree. Love this channel a lot.
He seems like a super nice guy! Makes one feel comfortable!
He is a great guy!
Excellent interview!!!!!
This song captures the sense of angst and frustration that many teenagers of the eighties felt. Thanks professor!
I was getting my angst from ministry, nitzer ebb, skinny puppy in 87. Not this sappy shit song
Truth
@@miked3168 I listened to that kind of music too.
Love that song!!! 😍
What a really cool, fun guy! He mentions all those classic masterpieces and then says his song doesn't belong amongst them... Oh, yes it does! Lightning in a bottle as you say.
Professor, I have to say you are such an excellent interviewer! You ask intelligent questions and then allow your guest to speak freely! Some interviewers jump in, speak over or otherwise interrupt and they ruin those little gems that you allow to come out! People think being a great interviewer is about the questions, but they’re wrong, it’s about the answers! Congratulations on another excellent video!
Hey professor....was wondering if you have any insights on Doby Grays"s "Drift Away" by chance? Listened to it other day and just love that song 💗🕊️. Thanks
Amazing interview, well done!
Loved this song, 18 years old at the time and identified with the heart break. Beautiful.
This was the best interview I have seen on this channel. The lead singer of fabulous.
I really like their 2007 rock & acoustic live version
It is really great!
I'm romanian and I love this song :) I didn't know this guy was so awesome 👏
How cool. The intersection of creativity and skill.
The orchestral version is amazing -- an absolute tapestry of sound.
