Andy another perfect tutorial for anyone thinking of winter hiking, hope to see you get more Subscribers as unlike others you know what you are doing mate!
I saw the write up and photos on Facebook this morning, got very excited to watch this one. And wowsers how fast you got this edited and posted here. Fantastic job. Loved it!! More of this please.
Loved that. What a great test of the tent!.... Appreciate the mention, you never know. Might add to my Subs 😅 but more so that we had a great meet and look forward to that winter route! Catch up soon , great wintery adventure 👌
At last, ive been sceptical about the X-Domes capability in winds, well ive been well and truly proved wrong. Thank you for showing what it will take. Excellent
@@cheri7828 the poles for sure and no one had proved it could handle moderate winds, I don't doubt the fabric will be fine, obviously the tie off points for the pegging loops, guy fixings are normally the week point but it's definitely proven it's a solid 3+ season tent. It's obviously not designed as a 4 season snow tent but you never know when you might get caught out, especially here in the UK where 4 seasons in one day are the normal. I am looking to sell most of my tents now apart from one to help towards getting the solid inner version here in the UK when it's available.
@@cheri7828 it all depends on geometry, materials and forces. sometimes people like to go for aluminium pole tens, with thick fabrics, but sometime metal poles snap. when using carbon poles that bend for example, they are (perhaps) less prone to snapping (like jap buildings that wabble in earthquakes, bridges, sky scrapers, etc). As you've also seen, it takes some wind to even tear the thin but strong sil-poly fabric - unless you're gonna camp in a hurricane. they real key is the poles and strategic guy lines to really reinforce the structure at key points. I imagine if you had 2 trekking poles inside the tent and used 2 zflick poles for each side of the crosspole you'd get even better performance from the tent for an extra 186g for 2x zflick. using two trekking poles to re-inforce the sides, as well as the top for snow, is very cool. the exoskeleton is also excellent for rain pitching. however, there was one youtube channel that managed to break a pole in setup but it may have been user error.
Good test that Andy, glad to see it getting a good hoof about and didn't seem to budge. I'm out this week to give mine a go! impressive so far. I've seen a few others comment on snowdrift but think that can happen with any tent in the right conditions. id imagine with snow you could hunker it down more by blocking the gaps. Anyway cheers for sharing ATB Steven
Cheers mate ayy the spindrift can happen to any tent i had it quite bad in the soulo once id got the vent open & i woke to a drift in the porch lol..wind had blown snow up through the vent & the inner was thick with it boots full of snow the lot 😀 Impressed with it so far im out now as i write this & its a lovely calm night..
It's very reassuring to see the XDome handling gusts of that strength, especially as they are not uncommon throughout the year in the UK. There's not a significant weight difference between a mesh inner and a solid inner so to achieve a sub 1kg self-standing tent is super impressive👌. I have got my Lawson ready for the Christening of mine when it arrives on Tuesday 🙏
My very first wildcamp was on Sheffield Pike back the 90s with a Vango Alpha which was soon replaced by a the much lighter Hilleburg Atko when it launched in 2002. No RUclips or on line stuff then. Paper maps, compass and only things like Trail Magazine to learn from. Used to drive up to the Lakes hoping for deep snow and took great satisfaction from pacing with map and compass in those conditions. Now we have the safety of mobile OS apps etc which can only be good. The outdoors has been opened,by technology, to a much bigger audience now, some of whom don,t appreciate or respect it as they should. Now in my mid 60s I still get the same buzz from being out there and ‘suffering’ harsh conditions. Great looking tent but waiting to see a solid inner before possibly swapping my X Mid. Thanks for the Videos🎉
Some camp that was. Good to see that x dome holding up in that. Seeing you out of breath reminds me of just how tasking it gets trying to move in snow with heavy winds. Well played Andy. ATVB Robert
Buffalo stuff isn't meant to be waterproof, it just works well while wet and dries fast. A lot of the time you can't keep hands dry so I think the Buffalo mitts were a good choice.
Those guy lines off each side of that short centre stabiliser on the exo skeleton made a massive difference in those winds. I reckon if you didnt have those on it would of been a different outcome. It performed brilliant, looked solid.
That was great to see the X-Dome do so well in those conditions! My review was in the dry, warm location of our guest room at home lol. Thank you for trying it out in adverse weather!
Great video Andy, Great UK weather the test the tent......was holding off till a review like this was done and you answered my question. Only down side to the tent I see is the spin drift getting under the tent, hopefully they bring out a solid version of the inner or maybe they have .........now just need to wait for the next batch to be avaliable....look forward to your next review. 😀🤙
In those conditions mate its unavoidable really & as the fly doesnt quite reach the ground its inevitable..a solid inner will be available spring 2025.
Nutter! You know what you're doing though. Getting mine delivered on Tuesday. Won't be taking it out in that sort of weather. Well, not intentionally 😁. Good to see it holding up well though. I've been thinking a bit about the fact that it's a lefty tent. I'll be sleeping at the narrow end too. Cheers. Great vid.
Great video, and nice to see the new Durston X Done standing up to some of the UKs harshest weather conditions! I understand Dan plans on releasing a solid inner, which would be a welcome extra to have. I look forward to hearing your review of it further down the line. But in the meantime, any chance of getting a video breaking down your full winter equipment list? I know you alluded to some of it in this video, but it would be great to get the lowdown and your thoughts on what works well and not so well, when conditions get like they did in this video 👍😁
Dans mentioned a few times in some comments he hopes to have the solid inner ready for april 2025 im looking forward to getting one myself too.. Im actually planning on making a video on my full winter kit sooner than later so keep an eye out 👍
Of course there is condensation😂 Its minus 6 on the outside and his body heat on the inside , plus the wind shaking it to death, its almost like a small shower in there
Top class Andy .........reach for RUclips and you can guarantee you're out and about kicking the arse out of mountains 🤣 Brilliant mate, take care Adge
Top class viewing as always, just goes to show how conditions can change in an instant on the high ground..not a breath of wind, calm & clear then awoke to deep snow & almost hurricane force wind's. It's not hard to see when you watch this how so many people get caught out & into trouble when they haven't got the right gear & or knowledge how to deal with it. Looked quite terrifying when you first opened the tent before daylight & the snow had blown in,the tent was rocking & the only view outside was horizontal snow. As i said on your Facebook post your definitely hardcore when it comes to camping matey.
Cheers pal..ayy i reiterate it on many occasions its imperative to be prepared & be knowledgeable if heading out in those conditions..too many come a cropper & end up in bother..
Great to see you back out Andy, always a breath of fresh air (pardon the pun). Do you think your Buffalo Mitts wetted out, noticed a couple of scenes where yours were inside your jacket cuffs? Had a problem with mine a couple of times before I realised they were over my jacket cuffs, instead of inside them, water running down jacket sleeves hits the inner of the Mitts and the inner wicks it into the glove.
Could have re the mitts mate..once on theyre difficult to tuck under cuff so water could have run into them..they were still warm though which was a bonus.
That video was great, Andy Sheffield pike was my latest in the lakes. I did it the opposite way to you Can I just ask what type of go pro you use? I am thinking about getting one
i think thats the fly at its lowest... if you really wanna block all spindrift/sand then a single skin alpine tent that connects the fly to the floor is what you want (but with condensation tradeoffs) - like the Samaya RADICAL 1 or something like it.
The fly was about as low as itll go maybe an inch or 2 off the ground depending on undulation.. In those conditions spindrift is inevitable even with 4 season tents .i had one bad occasion in the soulo..
What was the condensation like Andy? Around the 25min mark, it looks as if the section of inner behind you is soaking........ could just be the reflected light but interested to know how the tent handled the inevitable condensation. Great vid & good outing, nice to be getting the winter kit out and used, it's been so mild this year but those were proper winter conditions up there! Really liking the look of the X-Dome, I'm more than happy with my X-Mid2 as my go-to 3 season tent and impressed with design, build quality and price of Durstan gear so far. Looking to get my first free-standing, 4 season tent so will be watching all of the upcoming reviews of the X-Dome with interest. ATB
Condensation was inevitable in those conditions any tent would have & ive had true 4 season tents that are shocking for it..i had the vents closed for starters so no spindrift would blow in..add the outside temp & the fact i was wzrm inside,we breath out moisture & i had also boiled water..thats just a handful of causes theres many permutations to why tents suffer with condensation..

Thanks Rob..given the conditions mate the condensation was inevitable..id got the vents closed too so no spindrift could get in there..it never caused me any bother tbh anyway i think its just part & parcel of camping in a tent, no tent is insufferable from it..

anyone talking about condensation (which is on the fly btw) hasnt been out camping in a snowstorm lol. anyone think andy has any vents open in that snowstorm? also, camping by rivers means condensation even if the vents are open - so its really, really no biggy - would happen to ANY tent.
Cheers pal..ayy i think too many folk are obsessed with condensation..its not the tent but conditions that dictate..i was pitched on wet ground,i was warm inside the tent, had been boiling water plus like you say id shut the vents up so no spindrift could get in..all adds up & ive had shelters far worse for it..
@@AndrewBeavers i live in scotland and go camping at the boggy tarn on ben nevis in the xmid lol it doesnt bother me at all really. i think people forget about the fact that the bathtub doesnt get wet and you dont touch the flysheet at all. keep yer jacket over yer gloves too cos it looks like yer funnelling the water doon yer arm and into the mitt
Well done buddy👍 it certainly came in on you there…. That tents been on my radar since I watched the demo with Dan…looks impressive 👌 Can I warrant another🤣, can I hide it from our lass😱🤣🤣 looked proper capable in that wind…. How did the spin drift get under? Was it just the force of the wind coz it looked pretty close to the ground🤔 Cheers mate great vlog, stay safe👍
I think the general expectation in life is the case that if an unforeseen event occurs you've not planned for and can't overcome on your own then yeah. However, that's why he's planned his bails and has his gear to get out if he needs to. Risk mitigation, it's kind of like why you wear a seatbelt when you do the (when you think about it) incredibly crazy thing if travelling in a ton of metal at 70mph half a foot off the ground. Having said that, I wouldn't do this. Don't know the area well enough to bail in the dark.
Nice looking tent Andrew, was that a mesh inner on your tent, if so do you know if they do a solid inner one or if they are going to do one, I don't think Buffalo gear is waterproof as I have a Buffalo coat and mitts and they are only showerproof.
Nice trip. Glad the tent did well :)
You should be proud Dan, solid inner please!

anyone talking about condensation (which is on the fly btw) hasnt been out camping in a snowstorm lol. anyone think andy has any vents open in that snowstorm?
also, camping by rivers means condensation even if the vents are open - so its really, really no biggy - would happen to ANY tent.
Why use a summer tent in winter ?
What makes you say its a "summer" tent?
Bit of condensation behind you
Well done buddy👍 it certainly came in on you there…. That tents been on my radar since I watched the demo with Dan…looks impressive 👌
Can I warrant another🤣, can I hide it from our lass😱🤣🤣 looked proper capable in that wind…. How did the spin drift get under? Was it just the force of the wind coz it looked pretty close to the ground🤔
Cheers mate great vlog, stay safe👍
👋🏼
Not quite winter yet
21of December is officially winter 😂
Great video though I have loved the snow we had last week
You should have bought that house Andy. 😊 You know the one I’m on about. Straight swop for one in Barnsley.
What language is is he s speaking
All the U.K. folks have unique regional dialects-like Americans. I can understand most of Andy’s language now, but it took me awhile!
Its a strong yorkshire accent. Lovely it is too.
Yorkshire!!!
Im a yorkshire lad through & through from barnsley..
Would you expect someone to come and rescue you should anything go wrong?
As you heard. Andy is very well prepared, good kit, and a planned escape. . . . . . Adventure shouldn't be discouraged huh? .
@@howardmcknight9773 The current inner has about 25 cm of solid fabric around the bottom and then is mesh. We will add a full mesh option in April.
@@durstongearif you preorder now can the solid inner be chosen nearer the time? I live just near where this video is taken and weather can be bad.
