  • It's a very easy job to switch your freehub body, just a few allen keys. In this video, we talk you through the process with added notes on general maintenance.
This video shows the 4-bearing variant, but the procedure is identical for the 5-bearing type as well.

Any idea where you can buy freehubs in the UK? No of the major bike retailers stock them anymore. You can buy direct from Pro-Lite but they are nearly double the price! Help!!

Great video. What is the name of the grease used in this tutorial at 3.12? We used to be able to buy it easily years ago from local bike shops but it seems to have disappeared along with its name. Have googled it with out success. I have seen it applied on new derailleurs. Would be great to get some of it again as it was marvelous.

We have a few greases that we use, including a green one from Spain. Many bicycle-oriented greases tend to be light green in color, however there is no industry-wide consensus on color that makes that meaningful in terms of grease type or purpose. Green just seems to be fairly common for grease companies to use when marketing to their desired customers. I found a wide selection of greases available with similar colors and appearance. They likely all have fairly similar characteristics, but even this can vary quite a bit from manufacturer to manufacturer. Grease is not something that is used in high quantity for bicycle maintenance, so you're probably safe to purchase a modest quantity of any grease from any reputable brand, especially if it's marketed for general bicycle use.
We are not firm believers in needing to use fancy name brand greases. Outside of highly specialized conditions, most standard greases do their job fairly well and most fancy expensive greases provide only minimal improvement. This is even more true if the parts are well maintained.
Our only real stipulation is that you would want to use a non-lithium grease. Lithium tends to bind up in certain conditions.
Some people have found that waterproof marine grease works well, especially on outer surfaces where the water-shedding properties keep moisture out of moisture-sensitive areas.
In most cases, shopping locally is going to give you the best results.
Greases are typically subjected to a lot of shear forces, which can be destructive to some lubricants. Most greases are designed for this usage though, so can generally handle it fairly well and bicycles are considered fairly light duty for bearings and lubricants. Nonetheless, we recommend doing maintenance around every 6 months.
